I didn't read any wt literature for the first 3 or 4 years after I left, wouldn't have it in my house, but now I do read a mag now and again, but from a totally different standpoint than when I was in. Then, I believed it all, no matter how ridiculous: now I don't believe any of it, and read it from a critical viewpoint, reading cited scriptures in context. I read it and research it much more thoroughly than I ever did while I was a dub. When I do, I find myself wondering how I ever believed any of that bs.

Which aspect of JWs would you like to see a documentary about?
by Gadget inif you had a chance to make a documentary about some aspect of the jws, what would ou choose?
would you talk about shunning, the blood issue, explain how its a cult, or what?
unfortunately this would only be for an 8 minute segment on a current affairs programme so i need something that'll get peoples attention and make them think without having to go too deep into the subject.. what would you choose to talk about?.

I too think that the paedophile issue would get most people's attention. When I was in, a couple of the elders in our cong were always rattling on about this problem in other religions, particularly the Catholics. I know many people in my area would be interested to know that it is so rife within the wt.

Shunning: Is it really a bad thing?
by thinker ini met my jw wife about 5 years ago.
she da'd shortly after we met and like most people i thought it was terribly strange and wrong that her family shunned her.
for the first two years of our marriage my wife would call her parents on a fairly regular basis.

I am shunned by most of my former friends now, I knew it would happen when I da'd, and was quite prepared for it. In fact, to be honest, I am quite happy about it. I really have nothing in common with jws any more anyway. I don't share any of their beliefs now, and have made many non - conditional friendships since I left. A couple keep in touch, and I suspect one of them may be considering leaving anyway, but the rest leave me well alone now, and long may that continue.

Reveal something "weird" or "unusual" about yourself
by JH inwhatever i drink from the fridge, i put it into the microwave for 10 seconds so that it won't be too cold to drink.. .
whenever i drink ice cold liquids, it irritates my tongue/mouth and often triggers a sore throat.
now you have additional proof that i'm weird .

Hi vaporize and welcome, nice to meet you.
You say you have looked at the watchtower site and it all seems good and true. Well, many of us on this board, myself included, thought that way at one time. The core jw beliefs, such as the paradise earth, are attractive, and its not surprising that many are taken in by them. But because something seems to be true does not nescessarily mean that it is true, and I think you need to very carefully examine jw doctrine, using the bible, before you commit yourself again. Don't just blindly accept everything they teach, prove it to yourself first. Read the scriptures they quote to support their beliefs in context, and use another Bible or Bibles apart from the New World Translation, I would suggest the Jerusalem or the New International Version, or a Phillips NT. Take a look at the Watchtower Quotes site as well, and maybe Freeminds. Be thorough in your research, make sure of everything before you commit yourself.
If you do all that, and still want to be part of the jw religion, then I wish you well.
Take care

how long did it take?
by mjs mouse, ben innewbie here, a lil about me......grew up around the jw religion, never was baptized but i did get to the level of "unbaptized publisher" once, as of now i dont attend any "meetings", but still get the watchtowers and awakes pushed to me by family members.
it's actually been 3 years since i realized that it wasnt the "truth", even though i've probably have known it all along.
my question to the groups is, how long did it take you to stop calling it "the truth"?
-
dedpoet
Mouse, Kaylen, welcome to both of you, good to see you here.
I left the lie about 6 years ago, but it's only in the last 3 years that I have stopped referring to it as the "truth", although I knew it was far from that. I never acknowledge it as the truth now, even when talking to the few remaining jws who don't totally ignore me. To their credit, they don't try to force the issue, and I respond to their tolerance by referring to it as "the organisation" around them (only 3 jws actually speak now anyway).
In time, you will probably stop even unconsciously refeering to it as the truth, I know I have.
Take care

Just had a call from a sister
by dedpoet ina couple of months ago, i posted regarding a chat with a sister in my old cong who, despite knowing i'm da'd, was still happy to talk to me.
we've spoken a few times since then, both on the phone and face to face, and i have suggested to her that she might get in trouble for having anything to do with me now i've left, but she wasn't worried about it.. well, she called me a few minutes ago with the news that its got back to the elders that she is "associating" with me depite my status, and they are not happy about it.
she had a call from two of them earlier in the evening, they left just before she phoned me, and they warned her to keep away from me, or else!

Thanks AA, I am aware of what might happen if she does break free, and I will be careful, but we have been friends for many years, with no suggestion of there being anything more, and we are both single, so the opportunity has, I suppose , always been there.
As you said, the important thing is to help her out of the borg, if that is or later becomes what she really wants. Lets hope that happens.

Advice...
by Cori ini have been reading alot lately and not posting enough, but i have a situation that i would like some advice for.
i have been having doubts for some time now, and no longer believe the wbts have the truth.
my wife when she first heard of this dilemma, had some issues with it, we had a fallout, and we were seperated for some time.

I agree with Lady Lee, give her time, and maybe lead her by example to a degree, show her that there is a life outside the borg.
