Must read: Michael Macy and the Emperor's Dilemma
by jgnat ini am coming near the end of pinker's book, "the better angels..." and have come to the section on conformity to unpopular positions.
this led me to michael macy's emperor's dilemma.

just what am I supposed to believe now??
by purrpurr inwhile i'm glad i found this site, it has also crumbled to bits everything i've believed in my whole life.
i feel like the certainty, magic and wonder has gone out of my life.
this has left a huge hole in my soul.

Just because you no longer attend the kh or a church does not mean you cannot have God in your life.

Thoughts on the new 'God's Kingdom Rules!' book
by sd-7 ini was feeling a little melancholy earlier this week and i decided to start reading wt literature again, just to see what was new and improved.
and it seems that, as has consistently been the case, the more i read of the literature, the more i see that i made the right choice to leave.. the first chapter goes into explaining what the kingdom is, then it looks like they must've essentially cut and pasted from the recent wt study articles about the 'harvest' illustration and about the two groups of anointed = one generation, but there's a third group of anointed who aren't part of 'this generation' (but, i imagine, probably will be someday, i mean, if two groups decades apart in age can be part of one generation, why not three?).
it's interesting, looking at it again after all this time.

I can't get past the title of the book- "God's Kingdom Rules!" really? that is the title? Like my XYZ Team Rules! boys rule man, who says that anymore? Or do they mean God's rules as in the 10 commandments? or do they mean God is the ruler? in that case if they are talking to those who already believe in God it is rather silly. Thank you Caption Obvious.
"One wonders if they believe in Jesus Christ at all with a statement like that, because it sounds an awful lot like The Watchtower is more powerful than Jesus."- I have asked my jw this many times, he responds with blustering and saying of course they believe in Jesus but never can say exactly who has more power Jesus or the wt, or not in so many words anyway. Gives me some long winded nonsense that makes no sense. Glad I have not had a jw discussion in quite some time with him! Feels good not keep hitting my head against that wall.

Father denies children inheritance unless they quit Jehovah's Witnesses
by Tiktaalik inan article in the sydney morning herald:.
http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/father-denies-children-inheritance-unless-they-quit-jehovahs-witnesses-and-become-catholics-20140810-102egl.html#ixzz39yziuuvf.
"from beyond the grave, father-of-four patrick carroll continued a five-decade crusade to steer his children away from being active jehovah's witnesses and into catholicism.. mr carroll wrote into his will that his adult children were not to receive any inheritance unless they met two conditions: attend his funeral and become catholics within three months of his death.. mr carroll died in april 2012. his children attended the funeral but they did not become catholics and challenged the condition in the nsw supreme court in a bid to still receive their share of his estate.. but justice francois kunc last week ruled that mr carroll was entitled to place such conditions on his will.. the court heard that mr carroll's motivation was not so much about imposing his own beliefs but rather the fact he never approved of his children becoming jehovah's witness.. the court heard that mr carroll did not raise his children as catholics, neither he or they had attended church services when they were young and he did not enroll them in catholic schools.. but when he split from their mother lillian in 1959 she became a jehovah's witness and over the next decade the couple's four children, robyn, paulene, anthony and susan, were baptised as jehovah's witnesses.. mr carroll never approved of "their adherence to that faith", the court heard.. "[lillian's] conversion to that faith enraged mr carroll, who for the rest of his life continued to express his very strong objections to lillian's and the children's member of that faith," justice kunc said in his judgement.. the court was told that all four of his children remain active members of their congregation.. in his will, written in december 2011, four months before he died, mr carroll left more than a third of his estate to his four children "dependent upon them becoming baptised into the catholic church within a period of three months from the date of my death and such gifts are also subject to and dependent my children attending my funeral.".

The kids are probably getting so much great PR in the kh's it is worth more than the money to them anyway. Heck, they will probably be speakers at the next convention saying how they chose their faith over the money. Naturally leaving out the fact they went to a worldly judge to get their worldly father's money. Right or wrong the dad had the right to make stipulations in his will. If he wanted them to click their heels three times and turn around as a stipulation he could have done that too, his money, his rules.
Surely after all those years he must have known they would not convert or leave the jw's. Maybe it was all those lonely holidays, weekends and missed time with him because they were too busy with jw crap finally got to him and he decided to leave them nothing all along.

Why are there NO articles about JW near death experiences and death bed visions?
by freeatlast36 inmy dad died recently and was a long time jw.
we have had some interesting experiences with his passing and have been researching for other jw stories and there are none.
anyone know why?

I think both nderf and/or iands have a few stories of jw's near death, one I read was quite interesting. Sorry no links, it has been some time since I checked them out. Many who have near death experiences do not believe or are not willing to share their experience. Given the belief of jw's, what jw or even ex jw would be willing to tell that story?! Many (non jw) who have faith in God, Jesus, heaven, etc... will not share their story due to the ridicule or disbelief from those they love; how much more difficult to tell your story to strangers as well?

Ebola -274 LDS/Mormon Miss. are re-assigned, WT doing what?
by Phizzy inthe lds church (mormons) have pulled 274 missionaries out of the ebola affected areas of africa and sent them to other lands.. does the wt care enough about its sales reps to do the same ?
.

Do they have missionaries in the true sense of the word or a handful of r & f who live there anyway? Imagine the (made up) stories next summer at the conventions! They could have a field day with this tragedy. yeah, I'm cynical when it comes to the wt.

Watchtower Memorial Day makes local UK newspaper
by TableForOne ina tragic, but honest, story.
well written, in my opinion.. i'd like to see how the local jw's would handle this being mentioned to them this saturday morning in the ministry.. it's just a shame it's only a local newspaper, not a national.. www.bucksherald.co.uk/news/more-news/former-jehovah-s-witness-leaves-memorial-to-family-who-shunned-her-1-6206648.
