My first (real) name is biblical, and my surname is a fairly common word (a verb) so my full name - Christian name and Surname - occurs many many times in the bible.

You know, this isn't as far fetched as it sounds...
In the Tom Clancy novel, "Debt of Honor", CIA Spooks Clark and Chavez use a strategically situated hotel room in Tokyo to use a light pulse gun (not a laser, but something designed to disable the nervous system though the optic nerve path) to knock out pilots attempting to fly out troops.
Why shouldn't something like this work? I mean, it's not hard to build a powerful laser, if you have the money. Easier than a nuke.
Ironically, this same book ends when an angry Japanese pilot flies his fully fueled airliner right into US Congress during a full session of House and Senate, the President, and the Supreme Court. Leaving the newly approved and appointed Vice President, Jack Ryan (played by Harrison Ford in the movies) as the new Pres. When 9-11 happened, I immediately thought of this book.

"Sherlock, Jr." - Without a doubt, the best sustained series of gags and stunts in a 30 minute film sequence done by anybody, let alone Buster Keaton. It looks like a "greatest hits" of stunts, but it's actually all part of one story, (okay, a story within a story). This is available through Kino Video, so check it out!
Turner Movie Classics is showing Keaton's later work this month, but it's like watching a beloved Uncle getting tripped and shoved into mud puddles by bullies (in this case, MGM, who could take any great, independently created property like Laurel and Hardy, Our Gang, and Keaton, and suck the funny right out of it. But they had great production values, so you could be unfunny on a great soundstage, as opposed to being hilarious in the back yard of Hal Roach's house. That's called improvement of a product in Hollywood!)
PBS's American Masters series had a several documentaries years ago about the silent era. A three hour bio on Keaton, and another one on D W Griffith. Lots of footage, interviews, etc. I wish I could find them now, they are not available for sale.

Actually, there was oil in Somalia, which contributed to US involvement in the region. But yer right, unless their is a side benefit, or a direct threat (like, hahaha, Iraq), the larger powers don't get involved purely for altruistic reasons.
