I personally know a family that saw their parents pioneer in expectation of 1975 and really have nothing to show for it. The children support the parents now and have in turn given their own children huge opportunities with their family business that would have been unthinkable back then.
They go on lavish vacations every other month or so.
They buy new cars every year.
They are all elders and servants and pioneers.
Go figure.

Just because we fooled you shouldn't stop you from fooling your kids!
by slimboyfat inparents are naturally concerned that their children not make the same mistakes they did.
the society seem to be worried about the power of this impulse to protect one's children.
page 161 of the new book live with jehovah's day in mind reads:a dampening of our expectation of jehovah's great day could reveal itself in the advice we give to our children or to others.

Welcome! This place can be a comfort at the right time for sure.
I worked in the same building during a similar time. I have met others on here from my time at Bethel too.
I posted my Bethel memories in a special thread. Check it.

An elder just called me...just need some quick advice on how to handle it.
by stillAwitness inhey guys,
quick question: one of the elders just called me about a talk i am supposed to give tomorrow night.
well its obvious he is not aware that i don't live at home anymore (he made the comment that he hasn't seen me in awhile but figures its cause of the recent district convention stuff) and for me to let him know either way wether or not i would be giving the talk.

Don't do anything. If it is a Ministry School talk, people no-show all the time. You will just be another no show.

Are Jehovah's Witnesses a cult?
by Shawn10538 ina. this is statement a. only one statement or sentence here.
b. statement b. one sentence... .
i. cult.

Here is a little document I created using Steven Hassan's criteria for a cult (which is similar to many other's criteria).
I used his points and then used the Society's own words from their own literature to condemn themselves as a cult.

Hope that helps,

Dubs at my door ... what will I do?
by ithinkisee infor those that don't know, my wife and i moved away from our family and friends to fade away.
my mom and her new uber-elder husband with gb connections have been spreading it around where we are from that he is going to send a couple of elders to my house for spiritual "assistance".
so, everytime an unfamiliar car comes up my driveway a small wave of dread comes over me as the car gets closer.

For those that don't know, my wife and I moved away from our family and friends to fade away. My mom and her new uber-elder husband with GB connections have been spreading it around where we are from that he is going to send a couple of elders to my house for spiritual "assistance".
So, everytime an unfamiliar car comes up my driveway a small wave of dread comes over me as the car gets closer.
Like I left the mafia or something.
To date, no elders have come.
But...
Two days ago a carload of witnesses stopped and worked our area. It was a man and woman that came to the door.
I let him go through his spiel. He tried to find common ground with me by commenting on the ATARI shirt I was wearing. (Like, "See, we J-Dubs are cool.")
I let him do his whole thing and took the magazines and let him finish and I smiled and handed them back and said, "No thanks."
And they left.
I guess I could have got into it with them, but it would have probably would have messed up my whole day.
I have had ideas of what to do when JWs come to my door and what to say to trip them up. But I really felt sorry for them - being so sincere and so nice and thinking they can earn their salvation. Yet just under the surface of that niceness I know they have that same fear we all grew up with - that if we don't do enough we're gonna get zapped. How horrible.
So I just said goodbye.
Of course, if my old congregation ever does sic some elders on me, it will be a different ballgame entirely.

"How if we don't understand or don't quite agree with something that comes from the GB, we should do it anyways and trust them implicitly and obey and not lean on our own understanding"
===
That was something a CO said on the platform to our congo one time and it was one of the first earth shattering red flags that struck me to my core.
It was quite revolting indeed. I understand where you are coming from.
