hi walker, welcome to the board!
My question is do you still believe some of the teachings, and do you fear dying at armageddon if you dont return???
i haven't read through everyone's replies because this question comes up often, so i won't write too much!!! personally and in point of fact, the organisation of jehovah's witnesses is based on lies, deceit, half truths, fear, intimidation AND opinion, why mindlessly follow what they tell you to think when you have your own thoughts? surely if there's a god, his purpose for giving us the ability to think for ourselves is that we do so.
it's like the matrix
take the red pill, look deeper on the site, do some searches, see how deep the rabbit hole goes.
or take the blue pill and stay in wonderland.
either way you're welcome here.

Police drown cat
by asortafairytale in.
last week, two police officers threw a cat into the river to drown it, after owner alleged it had attacked her and no longer wanted it.. .
personally, i find it disgusting and completely inhumane.

drowning is a bit harsh, but imagine they shot it in the owners living room, think of all the law suit charges and paper work they saved.

Why does anything exist at all?
by logansrun ingod or no god, why is there something rather than nothing?
why do elements have properties?
why does consciousness exist?
-
dh
i think about it every day all my life too. my general feeling is that things exist for the sake of it, a whim, as meaningful as we want to tell ourselves it is, or as pointless, much like playing for the sake of playing. i always dreamed what it would be like to be born with no senses at all, no way to input data or form a perception, just in your own mind you were all that you knew, what would be real and what wouldn't, would anything exist? the matrix went into something similar, does it exist to you if you can't sense it, can it make up part of your reality if you don't know it's there?

Any thoughts or suggestions........

hi sarah,
welcome to the board... glad you found it, i've found it pretty useful to throw thoughts and ideas into since i joined a month ago, it's like an encyclopaedia of people who really do have their own views on things.
regarding the false, i wouldn't refer to it as 'the truth' for a second, you know, because it isn't the truth.
if you've already left the organisation you've done the hard part (in my opinion) if you haven't and are thinking about it, i guess you have to ask yourself whether your family will still love you if you leave or will the other jw's still love you, if they did at all? you know jw love is a word, and actions speak louder, there are many things about jw's that are totally out of order, just as shunning is in no way shape or form an act of love. i'm lucky in that though i was baptized, when i left, the relationship i had with my family never changed.
as everyone has already said, the world isn't helpless (however imagine where the society would be if it had no printing press, or if it was banned as it is here, they wouldn't even exist), in my mind our world has a certain nature, the planet has a nature, the same as people have a nature that won't ever change, though there are plenty of advancements that have been made over the centuries, fundamentally the nature of people and the planet remains, it was there long before the jw's and i dare say it will be there long after.
it just gets me thinking about the JW way of life
here's the thing... the jw way of life, if you want a way of life, then why not have the jw one... if you're comfortable with it. many religions and individuals live by their own way of life, some people live by a certain way of life because they want to or choose to, some because it is their belief, some were indoctrinated and know no better... choosing to live a way of life that you are comfortable with is one thing, but it is a fundamentally different thing to believing that your one way is the only way, and that all others who do not live by it will be slaughtered. i think it's a serious thing to consider, do you want a way of life based on a lie, whether it's comfortable & secure or not?I may come across as neurotic and self obsessed!!
join the club! best wishes, dh' -

Things that remind you of the WT BS
by dh ini'm one of those people who constantly gets reminded of random things by other random things, especially word associations & music... .

i'm one of those people who constantly gets reminded of random things by other random things, especially word associations & music...
things that remind me of the my life as a jw (and i use the word 'life' very loosly)
1. all along the watchtower (song by jimi hendrix)
2. the 'YOU can't handle the truth!' scene from 'a few good men' starring jack nicholson & tom cruise.
3. whenever i have to fill in a random name in a story i always remember the WT BS suicide cards where they used the name A. N. Elder as an example of how to fill in said card.
4. when i see mormons i think of jw's
5. whenever i listen to rap music, i remember that assembly with the drama where the concerned dad was councelling his kid that he shouldn't listen to rap music and the kid was just chatting shit saying 'it's the beat dad, it's the beat dad' what the hell was that all about anyway... hmmm!
6. yeah, beastie boys are cool, even though they were evil for a time, society even named them in one magazine as something you shouldn't listen to, no sleep 'till brooklyn, maybe there's a hidden meaning.
madonna backtracking? i'm not convinded, and what the hell is prince up to... rainbow people? jeez
7. michael jackson, because my dad flipped out when he saw my brother had a tape album titled 'BAD' how evil that must have been.
it's actually quite all insane,
when i hear the word stumbled i remember this woman in our congregation who was always being stumbled, i thought you stupid woman, get a grip, of course i shouldn't have been so harsh with my thoughts but some people did my head in, 6 months and they think they know it all, 18 months and they're stumbled!
8. wild beast, wtf
marvel comics, because they were demonic.
9. harlot... i mean come off it, who in the real world uses the word harlot? and remember those pictures in the revelation book of that ho riding that deformed red tiger thing... just to think that was probably one of the 'sisters' from bethel used in the painting, there are some disturbed minds over at jw central.
okay, so i am getting off topic, but i'm interested... is there anything that particularly reminds you of your wonderful time spent with the borg.

2 questions
by got my forty homey? in1. is it possible to worship jehovah without a earthly organization, just on your own?.
2. if jesus came to earth today would the wt society make him get baptized and then df him for apostacy?.
i was just wondering this because i received a book yesterday from my parents called "draw close to jehovah" i skimmed through this book and found nothing new, same old rhetoric from the 80's.
-
dh
surely if you believe in a jehovah it is perfecly plausable to worship on your own, however the thing jw's quote is 'do not forsake the gathering together of yourselves' but even discussion on this forum is gathering together, and meeting and sharing ideas with others who have as similar belief is also gathering together, it's just jw's who insist that it's only officially 'gathering together' when it's one of their specified meetings.
if jesus came to earth today the wt society ask him for id, when they saw he didn't have any they would nail him to a tree and take pictures and backdate them just to prove that he didn't die on a cross, then they would sing in unison, he died upon a tree, to set all mankind free, blah blah blah...

Man rounds next curve.
Crashes into a huge pig in middle of road.

Raising children in the borg
by Maverick ini have been visiting this site for about a year now.
i was not raised a jw.
i got conned in as an adult but my now ex-wife was raised in the collective.

I don't care how good a parent you were. Mine were too. But five hours of meetins a week, plus bible study, plus studying for talks ( I started in the KMS when I was barely five) Plus missing cartoons on a saturday, forced to work your ass off as soon as you could walk in cold & hot weather selling magazines for a f#$#ing publishing company. AND being socially ostracised by all of your peers on a regular basis. It just does'nt compensate! My folks took me to museums, plays, zoos. The symphony, amusement parks. But, on a day to day basis, growing up a jw was a living hell. I could'nt imagine dealing w/ that BS now as an adult, much less a child.
add to that being born on christmas day and every year having to have answer for the plethora of questions about what presents you got, some kids say you had it good, you got twice the presents, others say you've got it bad, you only get half the presents, little did they know i had it worst of all, i didn't get any damn presents!
also not being allowed to have friends from school, no 'extra curricula activities' family study in the evening, prepare for book study in your spare time, not being allowed into assembly at school, also watchtower had to be done saturday afternoon, day's text a 7am every morning and a 'family prayer' that lasted a good 5 minutes, actual eyes closed prayer! also worked in my school holidays because there was nothing else i could enjoy doing, and if i wanted something i had to earn it myself as my family weren't financially in a position to give me all the things the other kids in school had, because they were classed as trivial material things and my family were content as jw's, the list goes on...
simple things like my dad being the congregation accountant when he was a MS, we had to be the last to leave on thursday nights because he had to do collect the contributions, so it was well after 10pm on a school night that we would get home, and considering as a kid i used to be awake from ungodly hours like 3-4am, i was like a zombie, course i was still proud of my dad when they made him an elder, but i was more happy when the job of accounts went to somebody else!
my parents thought that what they were doing was best for us as kids, which is cool enough, now they will openly admit that they didn't get it right, but who does? admitting that it was messed up is enough for me, it doesn't change the fact that being a kid was shit, but we live and learn and it's cool, i learned, my brother learned, m parents learned, it takes too much energy to start blaming everyone, by the time you find someone to blame you don't even care anymore.
however i would love to burn down some kingdom halls.
