New $100 laptop could jump start education in developing world
by seattleniceguy inthe idea: create a crank-powered laptop that children can use to learn and communicate even in remote areas, and give one laptop to every child.. a one-minute cranking session powers the laptop for 10 minutes.
the laptops are outfitted with a wi-fi radio transmitted that allows multiple machines to become a communications mesh that can share internet connections of any member who happens to have one.
at $100, and with assistance from donors, real diffusion into poor and developing nations is made possible.

Organic molecules (building blocks for life) abundant in the universe
by seattleniceguy inturns out the ingredients for life might not be so hard to come by after all.
a nasa team has found that "a class of compounds that is critical to biochemistry is prevalent throughout the universe.
another quote: much of the chemistry of life, including dna, requires organic molecules that contain nitrogen," said team member louis allamandola, an astrochemist at ames.

Researchers slow light to 245 meters/second
by seattleniceguy in...at room temperature!.
the advance could remove a major bottleneck at fiberoptic routers, where light must be converted to an electrical signal and then back to light, which is costly and time-consuming.
if incoming signal speeds could be modulated, routers could avoid this optical-electrical-optical swtich and dramatically increase throughput.. http://www.physorg.com/news6951.html.

Randomness is not necessary for evolution
by seattleniceguy incontinuing this theme of evolution and randomness that has been going on this week, i wanted to address a common pitful for the would-be evolutionary student.
often, a person will remark, "i see how the theory works, but i just can't believe it all came about by chance.
" if you're such a person, you'll be happy to know that evolution does not require chance at all.
