Clicking avatar thumbnails to be taken to latest posts
by OneEyedJoe init looks like the ability to click on the avatar thumbnails in order to go straight to the most recent posts of a topic is no longer working for me.
is this gone forever or will it be back at some point?
it definitely made navigation much easier, especially for longer threads..

Got my memorial invite yesterday...
by OneEyedJoe ini wasn't sure how this would be handled since the elders haven't harassed me as much as a lot of others have gotten, plus we live a ways outside of the territory so i figured there was a shot they'd leave me alone since it's inconvenient.
guess not.
two elders showed up unannounced toward the end of their recruiting shift.

"If I wasn't born a JW, I would never have become one."
by OneEyedJoe ini've seen it mentioned by a few on the forum that at some point there was a realization that had they not been born a jw, they never would've converted no matter how many times the jws tried to study with them.
this was my experience too, and i'm wondering how universal it is for those that were born-in but eventually left.
i think i started having this thought (more specifically that if i were not born a jw, i would surely have become an atheist by now) in my late teens.

Apostate on Inside Amy Schumer
by OneEyedJoe inon tonight's episode of inside amy schumer she interviewed a comedian (kurt metzger) that was talking about having an open relationship with his wife.
at one point he said (paraphrasing) 'i was raised to believe that a monogynous relationship is the best thing there is ... i guess that's fine if you're going to stay in your doomsday cult all your life...'.
looked him up and sure enough he was a born-in.

Another "reaching out" guilt trip this weekend, apparently.
by OneEyedJoe ini just got word that the brothers of my congregation is "encouraged to attend a special meeting" this saturday.
i was told to bring the od book, and the 9/15/14 and 4/15/15 study wts.
judging by the articles in those, it's going to be another guilt trip to get all us dead-beat kids in our 20s and 30s to "reach out" to be jr. cult leaders.

Today's (4/12) WT study - all about Jesus
by OneEyedJoe intoday's watchtower study article is all about jesus.
this stuck out to me after a year of hanging out on here where one frequent point of criticism is that jws claim to be christians but never talk about jesus.. anyone think it's a coincidence that today was the "special talk" follow-up to the memorial?
i think not - this is the most attended sunday meeting of the year, complete with many ubms, studies, and miscellaneous other potential victims who have been subjected to a coordinated effort to pressure them into attending.

If you're bothered by god murdering innocent children, you must have a "critical heart"
by OneEyedJoe inthis week's book study contains this gem:.
the way in which the bible is written serves to test what is in our heart.
hebrews 4:12 says: the word [or, message] of god is alive and exerts power and is sharper than any two-edged sword and pierces even to the dividing of soul and spirit .

Bill Burr on religion
by OneEyedJoe ini watched bill burr's netflix comedy special "i'm sorry you feel that way" a couple days ago, and something reminded me of it so i thought is post it here as i think many here will enjoy it.. the whole thing is hilarious, but in one segment he did a bit on religion and how he "just let it go" one day.
he touches on the fact that tall other religions (he gives the example of scientology) seem insane to you, but yours makes perfect sense because it was put into you from an early age when you had no critical thinking.
all the while he makes no effort to force anything on the audience - everything is presented in a non-threatening "here's what i did" sort of way.. i have to give comedians some credit for my atheism - comedy is a great way to get people to challenge their beliefs while bypassing the usual defense mechanisms.

I just had fun giving a talk!
by OneEyedJoe inso, unfortunately, i'm still on the tms and had a talk tonight (in front of a co, no less) and the talk was on the subject of adultery.
in the source material there's reference to "spiritual adultery" i.e.
idolotry or when israel had alliances with pagan nations.

"The governing body at that time..."
by OneEyedJoe inso i'm listening to the regional manager give his mid week talk and he's going over acts 15 where they're dealing with the issues that arrose from the jewish christians wanting the gentile christians to adhear too the mosaic law, so some of the apostles gathered to hash it out.
it struck me, though, that he kept using the phrase "the governing body at that time" to describe the apostles and older men who decided on the matter.
once he even slipped up and said apostles, then corrected it to the gb.. i'm thinking that they've actually gone so far as to put it in his outline to make sure its beaten into the r/f that the gb's power is somehow based in scripture.
