Funny story about dumb JW rules
by cookiemaster insome years ago (the year when i got baptized), i was at a district convention (or whatever they call them these days) with my best friend.
he had a part in one of those acting parts at the convention (i have no idea the term jw's use for them in english).
anyway, we were both seeing through the bullshit of the borg but weren't aware at the time of this forum or other "apostate" groups, nor of the full extent of the perversity of this religion.

Are we pro-shunning or against it?
by Simon injust to continue my theme about religious freedom and how we approach criticizing the wts, i've also been thinking about 'shunning'.. i think shunning is the most unifying complaint that most ex-members of religious groups that practice it have in common.
it is the layer that runs under every other complaint - whatever the reason for leaving it seems "... and i was shunned" can be added to it as the final rap on the charge sheet.. of course it seems like a no-brainer to many of us and we hardly ever stop to really think about it - shunning is bad, the watchtower believes in shunning therefore the watchtower is bad.
they need to stop it.

Simon, I appreciate this discussion.
I think it is very important for all of us ( active, nonactive, ex, JWS) to get away from black and white thinking.
I hope your OP will help people think past their knee jerk reaction to everything JW. The issue isn't all or nothing most times.
I like how this discussion evolved into looking into the distinctions involved.
It is healthy to stop and reflect.
When I was in 3rd grade I moved into a very small town and went to a tiny school where all the kids knew each other from birth.
The popular girl A took a dislike to me.
That year she conducted a class wide campaign against me. It started simply.
Every time someone was partnered with me she or her posse would come up to them and say "poor you, I feel sorry for you." If someone actually volunteered to work with me, they would be met with distain and told they had Missfit germs.
By the end of the school year everyone knew that to talk to me or interact with me voluntarily would result in sharing my fate.
Yes, Miss Popular disfellowshiped me from 3rd grade thru 8th grade until I moved.
Those girls didn't think they had a choice either. It was shunned or be shunned.
It's peer pressure, plain and simple. It just depends on who has the power.
On the other hand. Miss Popular's sister tried to do the same to my little sister L.
Little L orchestrated a coup and got some backers from mistreated friends and convinced them to give MissPopularJr. a taste of her own medicine. After a day of shunning, MissPopularJr never messed with sis again and was a kind and gentler dictator. All was well in the second grade.
Little L refused to give the power to Miss.Popular Jr. and fought back.

Local needs talk
by hoser inone of the elders was missing his service bag and suspected that one of the publishers stole it.
he was determined to root out who did it so he decided to give a local needs part on the ten commandments focusing on you must not steal.. he enlisted the help of a trusted ministerial servant and got him to stand at the back of the kingdom hall during the part.
he told the ms that he would read off the ten commandments and when he got to the one "you must not steal" he would pause longer than usual and see if anyone acted nervous or suspicious.

Hi, new to this forum. Figured I'd let everyone know about my story before I got involved.
by JonathanH inif you just want the juicy details where i leave, i'll make disclaimer where it begins, if you just want to know what happened with the elders and organization after i realized it wasn't true, i'll mark that seperately.
we didn't do jack shit in service, or in the congregation.
maybe this was how jehovah came about?

The documents were very revealing. You will have a better understanding of the big picture. I dont know how those elders can sleep at night knowing they could have prevented several children from being abused.
I cried when Candice blamed herself because she didnt come forward earlier and other children were abused. She was a child. The adults didnt have an excuse.

I do think defenders lose sight of the main point. How are our children being protected.
They say it is the parents responsibility to protect their child. If parents dont have the information , how can they? Parents are trained to trust and go to the Elders, that the Elders have their best interest at heart and are guided by holy spirit.
Parents should be told to go to the authorities first for "physical protection, then go to the elders for "spiritual" protection. Take it out of the Elders hands and let the secular authorities deal with the crime part. The elders can deal with the sin part when they visit the guy in jail.

Athan: I agree. She did start using the lingo. She used the terms territory and house-holder also. I think as soon as she started using those terms, he started shutting down. She also rereferenced the call to what's his face GB guy.
I think it would have worked better if she led off with her question and then added her explanation. I think he was expecting a reporter and then realized after listening to her that she wasnt one.

God does exist here is my nonbiblical reason:
by Curious Kitten in(before you read i hope no one gets offended by the word retarted...that s how i thought when i was 13)my mom and dad are divorced and my father never helped my mother on raising us, so basically she was a single-mother.
he just abandoned my three brothers and me and my mother had to work two jobs all of the time so we never got to see her.
when we did see her it was after school, but all she did was yell at us, make food, and leave to her next job.

Welcome Kitten. Please take your time and enjoy your journey.
You are still young and have plenty of time to explore. Faith and spirituality is a very personal thing. You will have to decide for yourself what is best for you.
I do agree with the advice to do your own research before you commit to any organization religious or other wise.
If you choose to believe in a higher power, that is your personal decision and choice. There are many people of faith who have a balanced and happy life.
There are also many who choose to live a life of logic and do not believe in a higher power and are happy with their life.
I personally believe you need to be balanced and open minded what ever path you choose. Just be true to yourself and dont allow anyone to bully or influence you from what is best for you. Remember take your time.
Have an exciting and enlightening journey.
