I am a Living Time Machine
by TerryWalstrom inwhich world is this?_________________when the doctor pulled my screaming body out of mom all those 7 decades ago, i landed in a post-wwii world.it was--compared to today's world--an alien planet.. the world i live in today has nothing in common with the world in which i grew up.. there were no cell phones back then--there were black telephones with a dial-tone and an operator who placed your call.
everywhere you found telephone booths!
a call was a nickle.where did all those telephone booths go?i dunno.where did my whole world go?i dunno.. tv sets were huge boxes with tubes and small screens.

I was reading "Bridget Jones' Diary" recently (don't ask why!) and the entire drama of the section I read was made up of her missing a phone call from a bloke. She hung around her flat waiting for the call. She popped to the loo and the phone rang and she missed the call etc etc.
Today her phone would be in her pocket, not her flat and she wouldn't ever miss a call she didn't want to!
So much of history is made up of dramatic events that rely on communication not getting through on time or getting garbled. Think of the Charge of the Light Brigade. That whole sorry mess could have been avoided by a simple text: "Cardigan, don't charge straight at the guns. Lolz!"

Has your name or reputation been maligned by the Witness gossip-mill?
by stuckinarut2 inas we all know, witnesses routinely share in gossiping, slandering or maligning the name and reputation of those who are "spiritually weak" or ones who "fade" or "stop associating".. they feel it is ok to speak badly of such ones who "have left jehovah's organization".. of course, some of the worst perpetrators of this are elders and their wives, who insidiously plant negative stories in the minds of all they interact with in the congregation.
they may never have actual facts, but since when do facts matter to witnesses?
however through such conduct they manage to separate people from one another, or cause rifts amongst former friends.. this sort of conduct is plainly inappropriate.. but what scriptures could be used if the opportunity arose to confront such ones about the way they have behaved?.

by kpop inmy first time posting here but i have seen links to this site and clicked when i was doing research about the jw's.
i don't think you want to hear about my long boring story how i was raised a jw in south korea and moved with my family to the usa before i turned 16. like most of us ex-jw's and faders and dis-fellowshiped jw's we all have about the same story.

"Now I begin with my new years resolutions. I have a long list. Celebrate Christmas is on the top. Can you guess the others?"
Watch nature documentaries and agree loudly when they talk about how an animal evolved.
Go to a Renaissance fair, (you're in the US right?) drink too much mead, slap a wench on the behind and fight a duel.
Shoot a deer and drink its blood like in "Red Dawn".
Smoke one cigarette and then NEVER SMOKE AGAIN because that shit is addictive bro, I can tell you. (still struggling).
Go see an R rated movie.
Listen to AC\DC, or whatever takes your fancy, so loud your ears fly off.

Why do some Jehovah's Witnesses choose to be atheist or agnostic?
by Cassaruby in"traumatic as the initial transition may be, it can lead to the development of a truly personal relationship with these two greatest friends [the father and the son] .
.. "whatever sense of 'belonging' that membership in some religious system may create, it can never compare with the power and beauty and strengthening benefit of the intimate personal relationship the scripture presents .
from reading joseph campbell i've come to understand that there are functions to religion or mythology.

Atheism isn't a choice, it's a conclusion.
It's a conclusion that leaves you open to making many different choices though.
Work things out on your own.
Work things out with other people.
Ignore it all and just get on with your life.
Become an activist and join other like minded people in attacking religion.
Decide you were wrong and start worshipping Dagoth the dreaming god...

How long did people like Methuselah really live?
by dubstepped ini was working today and my brain was working in circles like it often does and i started wondering about what i was always told about people like methuselah in bible times, and their incredibly claims of longevity.
i've tried researching things but have a hard time getting through all of the bible thumpers to some real evidence, and figured that some here may be more informed or have done the research previously.
so, did people really live longer way back when?

I think it was the Sumerians who carved on their monuments that king such and such reigned for 1,000 years and king so and so reigned for 5,000 years. Basically it was one-upmanship bragging. So when the bible writers were making up their list of patriarchs they had to get in on the action otherwise their patriarchs would seem lame in comparison.
There was a chap on the James Randi forums that explained it all. I think his forum name was Marduk. you can still read those forums although they've moved.

Who is Gog/Magog?
by Cold Steel inezekiel spends two chapters (38-39) describing a war that either will never take place, or which has yet to take place.
according to the prophecy, the warlord gog, of magog, will 1) sweep down on israel, covering the land like a cloud.
this will happen in 2) the latter years when israel will 3) be a people “gathered out of many nations” and peoples.

My brother is mad keen on identifying the modern day Gog and Magog. Every single political ruckus on the world stage is bent and broken to fit in with his current crazy narrative. It's exhausting.

How to reply when someone asks about your spiritual health
by RodrigoGuerreiro infirst of all, sorry if i cannot correctly express the original expression used in my native language to ask for the "spiritual condition".. a few years ago some member of the family asks my wife directly how is her "spiritual health" (for me it's one of the many strange vocabulary used by jw like "the slave says...").
she was catched by surprise with the direct question and says that everything is ok... and luckily someone call them for lunch.. my question is: do you have any good answers for that question?
you can be ironic/use some humor because the question is a little bit anecdotical .

Look at them with wide eyes and say slowly:
"Deeper, stronger and more complete than ever my friend."
Then if they try and say anything else interrupt them:
Nosy JW: "But we haven't seen you at.."
You: "Deeper."NJW: "I'm concerned that..."
You: "Stronger."NJW: "People are starting to talk..."
"More Complete."
Then close your eyes and start humming. Count to 10. When you open your eyes they'll be gone.
