BTW: The UK is still paying the US for the war. It should be paid off next year. We might be able to afford another one soon.

I am a student in history.
You need to read up on the Battle of Stalingrad and the Battle of Britian. I'm all for tooting our own horn, but these two battles were crushing blows to Germany (and we weren't part of either one).
Now, if you want to "brag" about we did at D-Day or opening up a third front through the south of europe or how the Marines kicked ass in the Pacific, hand me the red white and blue and I'll wave along with you. Having two grandfather's who faught in the war (one didn't make it back) I'm all for remembering what they did. But we also have to recognize the bravery of our allies. To say that we single-handedly saved Europe from Hitler's grasp is just plain stupid.
