While I can't vouch for this story and I have to agree that it sounds a little off...I do remember years ago, stated from the stage, that one should not display too much affection to animals, that it could be unnatural somehow. I don't remember all of what was said, but reading this experience triggered that memory.
I also remember a statement (can't remember if it was the same talk or a different one) that animals cannot feel affection for humans. I remember that the animal lovers in the congregation were quite upset about that. They flat out refused to accept that. I remember my pet from growing up and based on my experience I had to disagree with that statement myself, though, I figured at the time that maybe the brothers who wrote that had to know more than I did. Looking back, I realize I should have gone with my instinct.
