R rated movies have long been frowned upon by the Watchtower. The thing was though that in the UK the rating system is different. Often US 'R' rated movies only had a 15 rating in the UK while others were in the forbidden 18 category and in the UK you have to be 18 to see the movie (or lie and say you are 18). When I visted the US some of the brothers were surprised by the movies I admitted seeing but they weren't 'R' rated where I came from.
Ratings had little to do with what was banned though as that was always a personal matter that elders dictated to others. Growing up I remember the controversy about "Ryan's Daughter". I watched it years later and it has one farily tame hot scene and is a very good movie. As a teenager I remember being chastised among the group that went to see "James Bond - Live and Let Die." Benny Hill was banned because of the sexy comedy. In later years he was deemed polically incorrect by the TV bosses and it took his death to be recognized as the comic genius he was. The A-team was mentioned at assemblies for its violence...strange thing is though no one ever died in that show...unlike Star Trek which was OK but where a red shirt died weekly and Kirk blasted his way around the galaxy on his peaceful mission.

Benny Hill, I loved that show, nothing was ever said on this side of the ocean that I remember, but in the UK it must of been taboo. Still get the reruns occasionally on some stations.

Growing up I recall an elder coming back from the MS and he had a whole list of shows that we weren't supposed to watch. Anything to do with the supernatural was out "I Dream of Jeanne", Bewitched", "Munsters", The Adams Family" to name a few. If I recall it was almost anything that the GB looked at as bad influence so that rules out almost everything. You know the counsel from the DC was that at get togthers or leasure time, we should all be singing Kingdum songs and be thankful that he provides all this "spirtual food" from his organization!!!

Trailer Park Boys is getting quite the cult following, a local radio station did a poll and this was the favorite show by a mile, got like 75 % of the vote, the show is different, been on for 3 seasons but only 20 episodes (6-7-7) on Showtime Canada, not sure if it shows in the USA or UK, to all fellow Canadians, has anything ever been said about this show ??? yet.

I could basically watch everything!
They (my parents) only gave me a hard time about X-files and married with children. This was however not the consenses of the cong though. Our cong was pretty conservative at times. I remember a brother condemning a-team, James Bond, Star-wars and even Startrek!

growing up in the 60's i was not supposed to watch Bewitched, Jeanie, American Bandstand, Twillight Zone , and they even tried to put the kaybosh(sp) on Star Treck. My mom and dad liked those shwos so they sort of ingnored the warnings. I was however, forbidden to listen to most music, and even remember hearing someone say that "puff the magic dragon" was not good to listen to. Also, janis joplin(i',m her biggest fan) song "Mercedes Benz" was supposed to be disprespectful. The hell with them, i watched what i wanted to during the 70's and never missed and eposide of :"SNL". We saw the Ghost Busters and took flack for it.
No wonder i could not make it as a jws, i just could not follow the rules.(0ne of my fav songs from the 70's was the outlaw country , jerry jeff walker "up against the wall redneck mother" and David Allen Coes "If that anint country".
I was always a reblel.
