Judas betrayed Jesus, or so the story goes. The WTBTS betrayed us.

When have they ever flip flopped...ok, I'll bite. How about this.

WT prohibits belittling other religions: Watchtower 12/1/ 1998: “However, the counsel to remain without spot from the world does not give us any basis for categorically belittling those who are not Jehovah’s Witnesses...Recall the example of the Jewish religious leaders...From their self-righteous perch, these fanatic men looked down on the Gentiles. We do not take such a narrow view, treating non-Witnesses with disdain. Like the apostle Paul, our wish is that all who hear the Bible’s message of truth gain God’s favor…A balanced, Scriptural view should affect the way we speak about non-Witnesses. Paul instructed Titus to remind the Christians on the island of Crete 'to speak injuriously of no one, not to be belligerent, to be reasonable, exhibiting all mildness toward all men.' (Titus 3:2) Notice that Christians were to speak injuriously of 'no one'—not even of the non-Christians on Crete, some of whom were known for their lying, gluttony, and laziness. (Titus 1:12) So it would be unscriptural for us to use disparaging terms when referring to ones who do not share our beliefs. A superior attitude will not attract others to Jehovah’s worship. Rather, when we view and treat others in line with the reasonable principles of Jehovah’s Word, we 'adorn the teaching' of God.”

Watchtower 12/1/1984: "It would be unscriptural for us to use disparaging terms when referring to ones who do not share our belief."

    WTbelittles other religions:
Watchtower 3/15/1997: “In some boarding schools, Witness students manage to study the Bible together, but even this is often difficult. A youth named Blessing, who is 16, says this about the boarding school she attends: ‘Every day the SO-CALLED CHRISTIANS come out to pray…’”

Watchtower 6/15/1992: “However, many of the 3,500,000,000 non-Christians of the world (twice the number of SO-CALLED CHRISTIANS) find the idea of a ransom very difficult to grasp.” Awake 9/8/1982: “Who are the "Moonies"? Press reports about the Unification Church have tended to highlight charges of weekend BRAINWASHING SESSIONS AND SLAVE LABOR...Sun Myung Moon, the Church's founder, was CONVICTED OF TAX FRAUD.” Watchtower 6/15/1956: “…RELIGIOUS PROPAGANDAS of this system of things UNDER SATAN.” Watchtower 3/1/1979: “…SATAN'S organization consisting of his political 'wild beast' and his BABYLONIAN WORLD EMPIRE OF FALSE RELIGION.”

Revelation--Its Grand Climax at Hand: “…Christendom's being beaten as with the hardened water of a pounding hail. Her BLOODGUILT, DUE TO HER SHARE IN THE WARS of this 20th century, has been laid bare, and she has been shown to be DESERVING OF THE FIERY EXPRESSION OF JEHOVAH'S WRATH. The John class, with later support from the great crowd, has continued to echo the first trumpet blast, drawing attention to Jehovah's view of Christendom, AS BEING FIT FOR DESTRUCTION…A resolution that followed drew attention to the hypocrisy of apostate clergymen and 'the principal of their flocks,' who are worldly men of strong financial and political influence.' It called on the 'multitude of the peace and order loving ones in the denominational churches . . . to withdraw themselves from the unrighteous ecclesiastical systems designated by the Lord as ' Babylon' and to ready themselves ‘to receive the blessings of God's kingdom.’…great numbers of people have come to realize that many doctrines taught by the clergy are spiritual poison--'wormwood.' Furthermore, the clergy's power in northern Europe is almost spent, while in most Eastern European lands, as well as in China, the government strictly curtails their influence. In Catholic parts of Europe and in the Americas, the clergy's scandalous behavior in financial, political, and moral affairs has sullied their reputation. From now on, their position can only get worse, since soon they will suffer the same fate as all other False religionists .”

    JWs are not prophets:

“Jehovah's Witnesses do not claim to be inspired prophets.” - Reasoning From the Scriptures (1985, 1989)

    JWs are prophets:

“You will be interested to learn that God has on earth a people, all of whom are prophets ... Jehovah's Witnesses.”-Awake 6/8/1986

If there is one true religion originating with an infallible God, then the following WT statement must be true.

"One God alone could be supreme and all-powerful; and one such God could mean only one true religion, namely, the one right worship of this one supreme, almighty God. His religion is one of right belief and is harmonious in all its expressions, just as true physical science is harmonious and not self-contradictory. The true religion of the one God does not disagree with itself, deny itself or get divided with itself. If it had internal disagreement, contradiction and disunity, it could never stand; it could not be simple truth; it would disagree with the scientific laws of the universe; it could not triumph in the long-drawn-out conflict between true religion and false. But true religion must triumph, because truth cannot be destroyed. That is why, despite all the many false religions in the world, the true religion has lived through till this day..."--Watchtower 11/15/1963

H ow can so many contradictions be excused then? Was the mistake God's, or was it the WT's?

WT encourages members to evaluate teachings for themselves:

“We need to scrutinize whatever is presented to us, deciding what to accept and what to reject. However, we do not want to be so narrow that we refuse to consider facts that can improve our thinking… Test whatever you are reading or watching, to see if it is truthful…”—official WT web site, http://www.watchtower.org/library/g/2000/6/22/article_03.htm

WT prohibits members from evaluating teachings for themselves:

What else does the Devil use in trying to turn us away? Has he not always tried to stir up rebellion, to cause Jehovah's servants to become critical of those taking the lead?... A person may go further and claim that the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses or other responsible brothers interfere with freedom of conscience and the individual's "right" to interpret the Scriptures. But remember Joseph's humble words: "Do not interpretations belong to God?" … And did not Jesus foretell that in these final days an organization of anointed ones, 'the faithful and discreet slave,' would be entrusted with providing spiritual food at the proper time?...Beware of those who try to put forward their own contrary opinions…The evidence is clear that Jehovah has used and is continuing to use his one organization, with 'the faithful and discreet slave' taking the lead.. God's own Word unquestionably points to Jehovah's Witnesses as the one organized people that have his blessing!. -- Watchtower 3/15/1986 [Note: The Watchtower Society claims IT is the “faithful and discreet slave”. Therefore, the above quote is claiming that people should rely on WT to interpret scripture.]

“Approved association with Jehovah's Witnesses requires accepting the entire range of the true teachings of the Bible, including those Scriptural beliefs that are unique to Jehovah's Witnesses…That there is a 'faithful and discreet slave' upon earth today 'entrusted with all of Jesus' earthly interests,' which slave is associated with the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses.”-- Watchtower 4/1/1986

“a mature Christian must be in unity and full harmony with fellow believers as far as faith and knowledge are concerned. He does not advocate or insist on personal opinions or harbor private ideas when it comes to Bible understanding. Rather, he has complete confidence in the truth as it is revealed by Jehovah God through his Son, Jesus Christ, and "the faithful and discreet slave."-- Watchtower 8/1/2001

Fight Against Independent Thinking. As we study the Bible we learn that Jehovah has always guided his servants in an organized way. And just as in the first century there was only one true Christian organization, so today Jehovah is using only one organization. … Yet there are some who point out that the organization has had to make adjustments before, and so they argue: "This shows that we have to make up our own mind on what to believe." This is independent thinking. Why is it so dangerous? Such thinking is an evidence of pride.”-- Watchtower 1/15/1983

WT says religions should not be involved with the United Nations:

    Awake 10/22/2000

WT says endorsement of the United Nations is a mark of false religion:

Revelation--Its Final Climax book: "...the nations will use the scarlet-colored wild beast, the United Nations, in destroying Babylon the Great...the ancient harlot will come to her complete end. And good riddance to her!"

Watchtower 6/1/1991: "Christendom...insinuates herself into the favor of the political leaders of the nations—this despite the Bible’s warning that friendship with the world is enmity with God. (James 4:4) Moreover, in 1919 she strongly advocated the League of Nations as man’s best hope for peace. Since 1945 she has put her hope in the United Nations. (Compare Revelation 17:3, 11.)...Christendom rested her hopes in the League of Nations, but it was overturned even without the coming of Armageddon. Now she has transferred her allegiance to the United Nations. But it will soon have to face “the war of the great day of God the Almighty,” and it will not survive. (Revelation 16:14) Even a revived UN can never bring peace and security. God’s prophetic Word shows that the United Nations organization with its member nations “will battle with the Lamb [Christ in Kingdom power], but, because he is Lord of lords and King of kings, the Lamb will conquer them.”—Revelation 17:14. Jehovah’s Witnesses confidently say that there is no salvation for Christendom in her alliances with Satan’s world."

WT prohibits tobacco use and financial dealings with companies engaged in objectionable businesses:

WT's own official web site--Tobacco use is prohibited.

Pay Attention to Yourselves and to All the Flock book: "The Scriptures clearly show that Jehovah forbids certain conduct among his clean people; brothers need to uphold Jehovah's righteous standards regarding the following:...Misuse of tobacco or addictive drugs (2 Cor. 7:1; Mark 15:23; Rev. 21:8, Int.; 22:15, Int.)"

WT's own official web site: "By considering the background of a company, an investor can also ensure that his money will not be used to support an unethical enterprise.—See Awake! February 8, 1962, pages 21-3"

WT accepts proceeds from investment in tobacco industry:

WT advocates for freedom of speech:

WT's own official web site: “Jehovah's Witnesses have been at the forefront in battling for this cherished freedom... 'Too often the idea is, "Free speech for me—but not for thee."’"

WT sues webmaster for quoting its literature online:

The Watchtower Society filed a $100,000 lawsuit against an individual who provided an online repository of direct quotes from WT literature. The web site did not contain any commentary, only quotes. In court papers, the WT claimed the web site caused them embarrassment!

WT President Rutherford says alcohol use is evil:

Watchtower 11/1/1924: "A desire to eliminate intoxicating liquor and all other evils is a proper and laudable desire. All Christians should be in accord with that desire....Intoxicating liquor is a great evil, and the saloons a curse to humanity...No Christian advocates the use of intoxicating liquor."

Of course, you're entitled to your opinion. I'm grateful to you for explaining it and repeating it. It's just that nobody else seems to share it.

If a JW apologist comes wading in on a forum like this calling everyone "Judas" and "God haters" they had better expect a rough ride. And, like I said, there's no harm in pointing out the common ground we share, namely that certain rules laid down by the Governing Body are clearly "flexible".

Fine then... Be my guest: feed that troll...
