the GB remains convinced that the mags are relevent to non JW's. They also feel that the denunciations they announce about false religion are prophetic. I think there was a thread recently about Revelation and the locusts. That tired idea from Revelation just doesn't interest many anymore. Besides, how many people still rely on printed material for current news?

I Just read the letter at jw.org

16 pages each magazine (Awake and Watchtower for the public), begining Jan 2013

Some articles will be available only on-line at jw.org. The website will show a new look starting June 2012.

IMHO this is purely cost savings (which has been discussed a lot here) but the reason that they are not dropping a magazine/combining to a 32 page magazine is all about the numbers, they can reduce printing costs significantly, but still count placing two magazines a month rather than one.

I have been waiting to see how a religion built around a publishing enterprise continues to exist after technology antiquates it. Especially since Rutherford this Organization has been geared toward one thing -- printing and selling literature. Now with everything going digital and traditional publishing diminishing the Organization finds itself in a time of change. Will they? I'm unsure. Once upon a time, the door-to-door salesman, such as the fuller brush man, was a fixture in American society. Rutherford's army was patterned after this. (If you look at the old, old literature they do not hide the fact that they are selling literature.) Consider that today door-to-door sales are non-existent and yet Jehovah's Witnesses continue to trudge on to progressively empty houses, even as other "modern" technology such as television is not touched in order to get a message out. In a future where tablet computers and eBook readers are as ubiquitous as cell phones will Jehovah's Witnesses be the only ones carrying paper publications?

that's because the selling of mags to non JW's was given up years ago. The door to door activity keeps the dubs busy. The donations and assemblies are the true money machine for them

    Very interesting.

I'm curious about the effect this will have on JWs.

JWs over the age of 60 or so are abnormally afraid of the internet, and most view it as little more than a repository of porn and apostate websites, based on warnings in print and at assemblies.

On the other hand, that group is the most fiercely loyal. They'll undoubtedly be confused or even fearful by this announcement. As someone else noted above, this represents a 75% reduction in published content for the public over a 5 year period.

Middle-aged and younger JWs will probably embrace the idea.

I would not be surprised to see more 'special talks' where you could keep the folks busy by passing out single sheet handbills/tracts rather than the mags. The tracts could refer people to the website and would also have the folks going door to door (or placing them under windshield wipers in public parking lots)

The letter for 2 april mentions that the announcement regarding the magazines/websites does not preclude a previous letter of February 1 regarding another announcement to be made immediately after the Special Talk.

Has anyone posted on here already or know of that one. Just curious.

I wonder if the new website look announced for June will have a Paypal link. It might be a shock for the Dubs in North America but has been a staple in G.B. for years www.jwgift.org
