If you can't pay, the hospital should have someone whose function is to find a way to pay for patients who can't afford it. I forget what that office is called -- Patient Support or something like that. Does anyone know how that works? Please sign in if you do.
It depends on the hospital. I once wound up in the emergency room right after losing a job (no income, no insurance), and had no way to pay the $4000 bill they handed me for one injection and the use of their bed for 4 hours.
I applied for their financial support, described my situation, and suddenly $4000 became $70. All you have to do is talk to the hospital adminstration and they'll point you in the right direction.
