The reason "nothing happened" was because heath agencies took action to prevent a massive outbreak.

Do nothing, and all sorts of very bad things will happen. Do a few basic things to prevent the spread and countless numbers of people will not loose their lives.

Here's an interesting little fact: Every year approximately 30,000 Americans die of the common flu.

The BBC has a page where they are posting emails from people living inside Mexico..apparently the number of sick and dead are being under reported.

Conspiracy persons would perhaps say that having a mutant virus suddenly hit, takes the heat off all the drug problems on the border and many of those conspirists(?) also believe that by using this outbreak effectively against Mexico, the US government could shut the borders, seal it up for a week or so and deploy the NG, round up illegals and thereby use disease as grounds for such action.

    Who knows? ...sammieswife.

Ever study the history of bubonic plague? It started with some sick people in places nobody cared much about (central asia). A few years later a third of the population of Europe was dead.

    Being prepared isn't paranoia.

    Remember Katrina?

Let's see. About 525 million people were infected by the Spanish Flu in 1918, with about 21 million people dying. Of course, this was worldwide. That was more than twice the number who had been killed during World War I. The epidemic spread quickly back then, but with modern transportation, it could spread much more quickly today. It's estimated the numbers could at least double if we had a repeat.

A lot of the victims were young, healthy males. It must have been a frightening time.

Bonnie_Clyde, there are a couple of good books out about the 1918 epidemic. I'm not sure frightening covers it. They have pictures of mass graves outside cities here in the US, people were dieing faster than we could bury them.

The media sells a product: news. Without news, they are out of business. Sensationalism and fear mongering is their stock in trade. We have far greater resources to deal with a flu epidemic than we had in 1918. The advance of Science and all that good stuff.

That said, it would be wise to pay attention to what is actually happening, just in case.

This google map is tracking cases.

    Good health to you all.

Flus still come out of asia. It evolves anew there, because people and animals (pigs) live in very close proximity. A cultural change there might remove the anual flu phenanon.

My uncle lived in close proximity to a pig, but the divorce fixed all that.
