A British museum has canceled a lecture by Dr. James Watson, co-discoverer of the DNA double helix, after he claimed black people are less intelligent than whites in a recent newspaper interview.

Watson, who won the 1962 Nobel prize for his part in discovering the structure of DNA, provoked a storm of criticism after his comments were published in the Sunday Times.

The eminent biologist told the British newspaper he was "inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa" because "all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours -- whereas all the testing says not really."

Watson, 79, had been due to give a lecture at London's Science Museum on Friday but the museum canceled his appearance, saying his comments had "gone beyond the point of acceptable debate."

The American professor's words have been roundly condemned as "racist," with fellow scientists dismissing his claims as "genetic nonsense."

"He should recognize that statements of this sort have racist functions and are to be deeply, deeply regretted," said Professor Steven Rose of the British Open University.

Watson is credited with discovering the double helix along with Maurice Wilkins and Francis Crick in 1962.

In the newspaper interview, he said there was no reason to think that races which had grown up in separate geographical locations should have evolved identically. He went on to say that although he hoped everyone was equal, "people who have to deal with black employees find this not true".

The British government's skills minister, David Lammy, who is black, called the comments "deeply offensive" and said Watson would only succeed in providing oxygen for extremist political groups.

"It is a shame that a man with a record of scientific distinction should see his work overshadowed by his own irrational prejudices," Lammy told CNN.

Watson is not the first scientist to show sympathy for the theory of a racial basis for intellectual difference. In March of last year Dr. Frank Ellis from Leeds University provoked anger in Britain after he admitted he found evidence that racial groups perform differently "extremely convincing."

The British Museum did the right thing by turning this racist aside.

Apparently the contribution to the world of science by these Black scientists don't count much in Watson's mind:

    African American Scientists
    Benjamin Banneker
    (1731-1806)
Born into a family of free blacks in Maryland, Banneker learned the rudiments of reading, writing, and arithmetic from his grandmother and a Quaker schoolmaster. Later he taught himself advanced mathematics and astronomy. He is best known for publishing an almanac based on his astronomical calculations.
    Rebecca Cole
    (1846-1922)
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Cole was the second black woman to graduate from medical school (1867). She joined Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first white woman physician, in New York and taught hygiene and childcare to families in poor neighborhoods.
    Edward Alexander Bouchet
    (1852-1918)
Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Bouchet was the first African American to graduate (1874) from Yale College. In 1876, upon receiving his Ph.D. in physics from Yale, he became the first African American to earn a doctorate. Bouchet spent his career teaching college chemistry and physics.
    Dr. Daniel Hale Williams
    (1856-1931)
Williams was born in Pennsylvania and attended medical school in Chicago, where he received his M.D. in 1883. He founded the Provident Hospital in Chicago in 1891, and he performed the first successful open heart surgery in 1893.
    George Washington Carver
    (1865?-1943)
Born into slavery in Missouri, Carver later earned degrees from Iowa Agricultural College. The director of agricultural research at the Tuskegee Institute from 1896 until his death, Carver developed hundreds of applications for farm products important to the economy of the South, including the peanut, sweet potato, soybean, and pecan.
    Charles Henry Turner
    (1867-1923)
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Turner received a B.S. (1891) and M.S. (1892) from the University of Cincinnati and a Ph.D. (1907) from the University of Chicago. A noted authority on the behavior of insects, he was the first researcher to prove that insects can hear.
    Ernest Everett Just
    (1883-1941)
Originally from Charleston, South Carolina, Just attended Dartmouth College and the University of Chicago, where he earned a Ph.D. in zoology in 1916. Just's work on cell biology took him to marine laboratories in the U.S. and Europe and led him to publish more than 50 papers.
    Archibald Alexander
    (1888-1958)
Iowa-born Alexander attended Iowa State University and earned a civil engineering degree in 1912. While working for an engineering firm, he designed the Tidal Basin Bridge in Washington, D.C. Later he formed his own company, designing Whitehurst Freeway in Washington, D.C. and an airfield in Tuskegee, Alabama, among other projects.
    Roger Arliner Young
    (1889-1964)
Ms. Young was born in Virginia and attended Howard University, University of Chicago, and University of Pennsylvania, where she earned a Ph.D. in zoology in 1940. Working with her mentor, Ernest E. Just, she published a number of important studies.
    Dr. Charles Richard Drew
    (1904-1950)
Born in Washington, D.C., Drew earned advanced degrees in medicine and surgery from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, in 1933 and from Columbia University in 1940. He is particularly noted for his research in blood plasma and for setting up the first blood bank.

Are you sure he was not speaking of those living in Africa currently? Like me saying, "I am depressed at the fact that everyone wants to claim inner city black children are as intelligent as their suburban white counterparts, but studies show because of class structure they are not as intelligent." I'm not justifying; just saying he could have been pointing out that well in a poverty laden country you general don't have well educated people. Of course he might have meant it in a completely racist way...just wondering is all.

    Burger Time,

He was speaking about blacks in general. Here's a specific quote that indicates his racism:

He went on to say that although he hoped everyone was equal, "people who have to deal with black employees find this not true".

Just so everyone knows, Watson and Crick stole a prepublication version of a paper from Rosalind Franklin, a woman, who had discovered the real structure of DNA through DNA x-ray diffraction. They presented her information as their own and gave her a brief footnote mention.

So let's see, who is less intelligent here?

IQ tests also have shown Asians to be more intelligent then Europeans. I am Irish by decent but I don't have a problem with that. Should I be banned from speaking for pointing out test results?

I disagree with your premise. Tests don't prove intelligence. Tests can prove that you have studied well and are applying yourself to the subject at hand. Or they prove that you can take tests.

Watson made a broad generalization implying that Black people have less potential, and therefore are worth less to society than others. That's racist.
