No really. It's a great book zagor. Anyone attempting to understand the complexities of this issue should read it. One cannot understand a people without understanding their history.
No I believe you, but do you really think people who are here complaining really want to know about it or are they just interested that their needs are satisfied and their views heard and to make those views overshadow any other? Talk about WTBS legacy of "scholarship" lol.
Great job by bringing the topic up :), did you read the book?
Good topic, nvr. This is not a simple, black and white issue.
As for the amnesty part, I believe it is a slap in the face to those who have waited for years to immigrate the "right" way.
Personally, my personal concern is not "illegals" from Mexico and Latin America. They just want a job for the most part. Why aren't we concentrating on closer monitoring of the expired visas and suspicious tactics of countries that breed terrorism. Other than keeping down terrorism and crime, I think political boundaries are a farce.
My ancestors came to this country in the early 1700's. Given the history of my family, it's a shame the Indians didn't have stricter immigration laws (as Will Rogers pointed out long ago). As far as I'm concerned, I'm just as "illegal" as anyone else but have been grandfathered in because my family was from western Europe except for a great great grandparent who was Cherokee. Nevertheless, this land is my land and is my home.
Many from the United States move to Mexico, so the border crossing goes both ways. However, the Anglos are accepted in Mexico because they are wealthy. They go to Mexico to live cheaply and have a higher standard of living than they could afford in the USA.
The history of the United States points up the fact that one group is always the "out" group. It was the Irish, then eastern and southern Europeans, African Americans, the Chinese (especially in the west). In every case the outcast group was doing the work no one else wanted to do.
It has never been to anyone's political disadvantage to blame the least powerful, the poorest, the most disenfranchised for everything that's wrong.

Amnesty for Illegal Immigrants?
First I would say let's prosecute, convict and then demand no amnesty for the politicans that got us into this mess. Twenty years ago went went through the same thing on a smaller scale with the politicos promising a ONE-TIME amnesty - never to be repeated. This was suppose to fix the problems and laws were passed to insure it - the only problem was, no one enforced the laws and look where we're at. The only time you can trust a politician is when they close the lid on their casket.
1. Secure the border, stop the influx.
2. Register ALL illegals.
3. Immediately deport all illegals that have committed crimes. Automatic 5 year sentence if they return.
4. Amend the laws that make children of illegals citizens.
5. Issue something like a social security number to all who are qualified to stay, don't allow 10 deductions.
6. Fine each one who stays $10,000. Let them pay $100 per month for 10 years, or receive citizenship, and speak english.
7. Require English speaking training.
8. Prosecute the next President of the United States for "crimes against the constitution" if they allow the border to get the way it is now again.
9. Raise the minimum wage for these registered workers to $10.00 per hour, with cost of living increases.
10. Do not allow anyone not registered, and not working for at least 5 years to receive any kind of welfare. If they receive medical emergency treatment, they make appropriate payments to the hospitals or are deported.
Just a few thoughts.

Congratulations on maintaining this discussion civil so far, nvr. I replied to a "tree hugger" discussion recently and we weren't a page into the thread before someone popped in to say we were all stupid. Here's to hoping this discussion remains that way. It's a very important and complicated issue. Reasonable people should be willing to listen to both sides before declaring that they have it all figured out and anyone that disagrees is an idiot. Unfortunately, the anonymity the internet provides seems to encourage that type of low-brow political discussion.
Thanks to all for their positive contributions and observations.
This debate is not going to go away any time soon.
May humanity come out the winner.
Why can't people see how ridiculous this is?! Only in America
Immigration is a hot topic here as well, has been since the late nineties when a woman by the name of Pauline Hanson and her 'One Nation' party entered parliament. It intensified in 2001 when prime minister howard used a boat of illegal immigrants to help him win the election. They were spotted off the coast by a container ship, MV Tampa. The captain allowed the 433 immigrants to board his ship as theirs was sinking. The captain then sent out a distress signal to notify what was happening. He was told to not enter Australian waters. He defied their order and headed for Christmas Island. The SAS was sent and a stand off that lasted weeks began. Over the weeks the media virtually labelled the captain as some kind of a monster, after all he should have done the right thing and watched them drown....
I could go into a lot more detail such as the children overboard scandal but there is a couple of points I'd like to make....
Here in Oz, we lock up our illegal immigrants in detention centres that are managed by private security companies. Both Amnesty International and the United Nations have condemned these places calling them inhumane. The government responds with its none of their business. There has been numerous cases of legal citizens locked up in these places for long periods of time, mistaken as illegal immigrants even though they hold oz passports. There has also been several cases of oz citizens deported in the belief they are illegal immigrants. In one case, they discovered their mistake the following day and did absolutely nothing about it. It wasn't until the media learned of the situation a couple of years later that they agreed to allow the woman to return. She has children here, she missed over 2 years of being a mother because they wouldn't admit to their mistake. Another case involved a man who was born in oz and still deported.
My second point (I'm speaking for oz here, not the us) our country was founded on immigration, we'd be up sh!t creek if it were not for the migrants who came here and helped build the country to what it is today. I see no justification for stopping migrants and certainly not for locking them up. One of Oz's biggest problem is our populations needs to expand, we don't have enough people here, and they want to stop the population from expanding....
Either accept illegal immigrants or make it easier to migrate to your country.
Thanking for allowing me to vent my views, hope it didn't bore you too much!
nvrgnbk, thanks for the book recommendation. I'm going to look for it this weekend.
1. Secure the border, stop the influx.
Can't have you been to it.
2. Register ALL illegals.
That's funny I can see it now " excuse me I am here to register as an illegal "
3. Immediately deport all illegals that have committed crimes. Automatic 5 year sentence if they return.
Why not simply put their employer in jail 10 year minimum.
4. Amend the laws that make children of illegals citizens.
Sorry man not going to happen the above would work better.
5. Issue something like a social security number to all who are qualified to stay, don't allow 10 deductions.
6. Fine each one who stays $10,000. Let them pay $100 per month for 10 years, or receive citizenship, and speak english.
That's a years pay to most ain't going to happen.
7. Require English speaking training.
Actualy stiming from the treaty that ended the mexican american war we are required to teach both english and spanish in our schools.
8. Prosecute the next President of the United States for "crimes against the constitution" if they allow the border to get the way it is now again.
Why not the current or last three before him.
9. Raise the minimum wage for these registered workers to $10.00 per hour, with cost of living increases.
Why not the rest of us legals.
10. Do not allow anyone not registered, and not working for at least 5 years to receive any kind of welfare. If they receive medical emergency treatment, they make appropriate payments to the hospitals or are deported.
First they will just chose to die in the street which some are doing now. Second we aren't deporting them now for simply not legaly bering here forget it.
