Heavenly Gates Closed in 1935… Re-opened in 2007

Since 1935, the Watchtower had been categorically teaching (for over 6 decades) that the heavenly calling of the 144,000 anointed Christians had ceased in 1935. This teaching was especially significant to older JWs (especially those who spent much of their lives serving the Watchtower as pioneers, elders, missionaries, bethelites, etc.) because many of these would eventually turn their attention to the aging Governing Body members and feel a sense of relief knowing that the end was drawing ever so near. In other words, as more Governing Body members (who were born before 1935) passed away, the closer they would get to their long-awaited reward of surviving Armageddon and living on Paradise Earth where they would finally hug grass-eating lions near a waterfall while marveling at snow-peaked mountains in the distance. It was pretty much a given… No more GB members born before 1935 = Paradise.

But as the 90’s came to a close, the Watchtower was forced to start putting the brakes on this “1935” doctrine as they lost Frederick Franz, George Gangas, John Booth and William Loyd Barry between 1992 and 1999. What were they to do with only 8 remaining members who were born before 1935? Press on, of course.

In fact, I remember 1999 all too well as the year of much expectation since the Watchtower (March 1, 1984 page 19 paragraph 12) indicated that Armageddon would arrive much sooner than the turn of the century. This was followed by two re-affirming articles in the May 15, 1984 Watchtower. But what were they to do with less than a year remaining before the year 2000 (hence, Armageddon)? Press on, of course.

Needless to say, Y2K came and went uneventfully and many were left scratching their heads. But the Governing Body decided to stick with their “1935 Heavenly Gate Closure” doctrine as they still had plenty of members on the GB who were born before that year. In fact, the Watchtower May 15, 2001 page 15 was yet another reminder that they fully intended to stick with this doctrine for as long as they deemed necessary. However, with the deaths of 6 more Governing Body members between 2001 and 2007 (Klein, Swingle, Henschel, Sydlic, Schroeder and Barber), they simply could not hold on to this lie any longer without looking like fools. So, in 2007, with only 2 members on the body born before 1935 (John Barr & Theodore Jaracz, both dying 3 years later), they were finally forced to quietly do away with this false doctrine in a “Questions from Readers” article of the May 1, 2007 Watchtower. As expected, however, the rank and file were mostly oblivious to this situation and simply accepted it as “New Light” from Jehovah.

So, after 71 years, the Watchtower was forced to “re-open” the Heavenly Gates in 2007 for any other delusional JWs who may eventually feel that they are part of a special class of Christians. And all of this was possible thanks to Proverbs 4:18 (their universal “get-out-of-embarrassment-free” card). That being said, I firmly believe that the next major change they will be forced to make is with regards to the number 144,000 being only a symbolic number. This along with the “overlapping generations” teaching should buy the Watchtower at least 50 more years which is plenty of time to brainstorm a new self-preservation strategy while re-grouping in their brand new facilities in upstate New York.

    1. I used to ask JWs to show me the 1935 date from the Bible or explain how it was arrived at.

    2. Of course, no one could.

    3. Didn't matter; the GB is always right.

    4. Because these gates were "closed" invisibly by pronouncement of Rutherford, it was just as easy for the 21st century GB invisibly to "reopen" them.

    5. Now this 1935 doctrine is one more piece of embarrassing "old light" from WT history that JWs can conveniently forget.

What, Saint Peter can't change his mind

It seems that the gb are downplaying the importance of how many partake. Therefore the 1935 doctrine being changed will probably not matter.

I left around 1970. When I was growing up, my gm was too young to be remnant. My great-grandfather and great uncles were remnant. I used to worry as a child after my ggf died that he could watch me take a bath from heaven. The idea was not comfortable. When I first started reading posts, I was astonished at young remnant members now. It was scandalous if you were not in the proper generation! My gm never thought my ggf was a member of the remnant b/c she had a tragic childhood and blamed him. He was given due respect. We were almost celebrities in our local KH to have a family member who was remnant. I could not understand, as a young child, how some family members went to heaven and others went to a grave until after Armageddon. I was told that was the way it was and it had to do with a certain time.

Others can correct me but I remember all this was behind the scene conjencture. I do not recall it being discussed at the KH. It was an informal code -- a set of manners and expectations. Our overseer was loony. He announced before 1975 that he was remnant when he was in his thirties. Since we did not like him, there was extended family rejoicing that Bethel was going to crucify him. One person actually asked for some informal guidance about the matter. The family member was told that it was ok. Something to just accept and not question. Behind the scenes, people were very puzzled.

I never heard any discussion of how someone knew they were remnant members. 1975 seemed credible as an Armageddon date (relatively credible) because my ggf was in his late 90s when he died. I figured maybe someone in their early 100s born just before the closing date of the class was going to keel over. Poof - tons of new remnant. Has something in society in general changed that people are more assertive? The remnant always reminded me of the elect in Puritan thought. You are chosen by Christ. Well, someone with low self-esteem is likely to not feel and vice versa.......

So may I ask what actually happened between remnant members being so sparse in numbers and now. The status itself has no meaning now when I read excerpts of the literature. If everyone is remnant and it no longer has any value, why have a remnant? I don't understand the evolution of doctrine from one to the other. Did they just have new light and as of a certain date, you were encouraged to suddenly be a remnant member?

The Brother who studied with me and was our Presiding Overseer and a private pilot took Nathan Knorr of a trip and somewhere up in the air they hashed it out about 'how you know' and my PO began Partaking in the late 60s.

    In the end...

Making shit up as you go:

    Is it directed/inspired by god?

    Or the product of humans?

I never wanted to be a king or priest so the idea of being of the remnant never appealed to me.

I also was very suspicous when anyone in their 50's or younger claimed they were annointed.
