Excited about the CO visit
by StarTrekAngel induring the many years of being a jw, i could never really bring myself to be exited about the co's visit.
this has been an issue that always kept me wondering back to religions.
why could not feel the same happiness that made everyone around me cry during the sunday service?

There is the weekday meeting where he delivers the first talk and then he does the public talk on the weekend, plus another one after a summary of the magazine. -

Self assembly chairs & evolution
by suavojr ini'm no expert and do not claim to be in regards to how evolution works but this small test did make think how all things are related and have evolved from one common ancestor.
the horrible example that i grew up hearing about a watch not being able to assemble itself or plane after a tornado, etc... dawkins would say, "well of course not" but mit seems to be on the path to make us think twice.

Eden one. It certainly is not proof of evolution, but it is proof of concept. The magnets are the key. In nature, biological system do undergo certain random mutations. Imagine that you throw another variable to the above experiment, where the magnets would change shapes randomly. At some point, two pieces would have a chance of having the right fit and they will unite. In this case we are putting together a chair. If a leg happens to mutate on a magnet that fits the arm rest, then the chair is useless. In nature, natural selection would take care of eliminating this useless chair. Eventually, one will form that will fit the environment and survive.
The environment plays a huge roll, probably as big as genetic mutations if not bigger. Here is an example. Studies in the south parts of the US has shown that rattle snakes are developing this rare mutation. One where the rattlers are not good and they don't make any noise. The snakes with this mutation are surviving and reproducing, while the population of healthy snakes is declining. Biologists have determined that the mutation itself is only physical, it poses no health risks for the snake (no diseases or anything that would kill it naturally). After some time. they determined that those healthy snakes are always able to warn bystanders of their presence, which ends up with the human killing the snake, while the one with the mutation is not able to warn anyone of its presence, therefore surviving the human threat. It then goes on to reproduce, carrying the mutated gene forward.
Let there be light..

During the many years of being a JW, I could never really bring myself to be exited about the CO's visit. This has been an issue that always kept me wondering back to religions. Why could not feel the same happiness that made everyone around me cry during the sunday service? Why could I not bring myself to go to others and tell them... exciting time that we have this coming up this month. The CO is coming, are you ready to be uplifted?
Well I can say that for the first time in my life, I am excited about the visit. Specially when I put the titles of the talks he will give in perspective with some of the comments brought forward here. (like the CO saying that soon of way of worship will be changed.)
The titles are as follows
1- See that you are not frightened - (alleging to Mathew 24:6)
2- The scene of this world is changing
3- something else about survival that I can not remember.
We'll see what happens

8 million - The Population of Honduras
by bemused ini sometimes look at the magazines on jw.org to see what the wt are saying now.
the latest watchtower is a good old fire and brimstone, armageddon is coming any moment now issue, but it was a short article in the april 2015 awake that caught my eye.
it features the country of honduras and is quite an informative little read (though failing to mention the very high crime rate in that country).

Approach a JW and tell him his religion is tiny. He will direct you to Mathew 7:14
Go to a meeting or assembly and you will be showed how this "unparalleled growth" is fulfilling the words of Isaiah 60:22

I quit the Theocratic Ministry School
by My Name is of No Consequence inafter almost 24 years in the school and doing it since i was nine years old, i officially resigned.
it has become increasingly difficult to prepare talks, especially with the new format for brothers.
i did not mind doing them; i actually put the time and effort into getting them out.

So what is exactly your end goal? Why don't you want to come thru as "too apostate". Do you want to continue engaging this guy ? -

If I remember correctly (not for sure since it has been a while), GB member Jackson comes out in that video saying that JW do not claim to be inspired by holy spirit. Can't remember which one of the two videos it is. Have you watch them? -

Are we pro-shunning or against it?
by Simon injust to continue my theme about religious freedom and how we approach criticizing the wts, i've also been thinking about 'shunning'.. i think shunning is the most unifying complaint that most ex-members of religious groups that practice it have in common.
it is the layer that runs under every other complaint - whatever the reason for leaving it seems "... and i was shunned" can be added to it as the final rap on the charge sheet.. of course it seems like a no-brainer to many of us and we hardly ever stop to really think about it - shunning is bad, the watchtower believes in shunning therefore the watchtower is bad.
they need to stop it.

For most of the modern history, religion has been mostly based on "not judging". I mean religion itself, not individuals. Individuals tend to judge no matter what they believe on or not believe at all. Point being is that, for the most part, anyone, even a criminal, is thought to have a right to spirituality and the right to enter a church and have the ultimate freedom of confessing the worst atrocities, just as if he was talking in confidentiality with God. The priest being the representative of God.
Speaking exclusively about shunning (and not on wether the priest should be obligated to report the confessed crime), one should be given the right to shun a family member whom you consider a danger to your family. I won't be surprised to find out some of us do that. I have a member on my family who killed his lover while having his own wife and kids. We definitely don't want anything with that guy. But we do so out of our own conscience, and God would ultimately judge wether we acted properly or not. There is huge giant gap between that, and the fact that a religion will use its power to convince you to shun someone you don't know all that well, just because he disagreed with said religion. If they want to allow a pedophile to enter the church because he is "repentant", then by all means proceed. But let authorities handle the matter and so that the members become aware. We will then individually choose to shun him or not and wether we do so forever or just until he or she earns our trust again.
