  Marriage Problem

  i am a "worldly" person, not of any religion and am soon to be marrying a long-term disfellowshipped jehovahs witness.

  she has not been of the religion for over a decades time and seemingly her immediate family has accepted this through the years.

  we've traveled across country together so she could introduce her family to me and have not had any problems.

  Hi Jeff, congratulations on your engagement and welcome.

  You sound exactly like my husband when we were getting married. My family made the "threats" too and wound up boycotting our wedding and reception. He had over 90 guests and I had 10. It was an awesome time none the less and we're still happily married 9 years later without my family's blessing. I think my family's bad behavior has done nothing but bring me closer to my husband's family. I don't think many people have close relationships with their in-laws like I do.

  Her family sounds suprisingly liberal for JW's to me the fact that they've had peacful contact thus far is rare. She is luckier than most in that respect. Your wife is right, to them she's the one who's turned her back on them by rejecting their belief system. It's obvious to anyone who's never been a part of their mindset that the opposite is in fact true but changing their minds on this is a daunting task at best and impossible at worst.

  You should just enjoy your special day and if they show up fine, if not don't let it ruin what should be one of the happiest days of your lives.

  Dallas Apostates Get Thee Ready To Reggae!

  all my dallas peeps might want to know that the dallas legends of reggae festival (formerly the bob marley festival) will be in town this weekend at the annette strauss artist's square.

  i will be there both days, probably all day as i take pics for them and host them online.

  it always makes for great fun because i make sure everyone i take pictures of gets the url of the pics i take.

  Not how I pictured the man who gave us "Pussy Control" would end up!

  Before I left in '93 I remember rumors prince was being witnessed to. My mom is friends with a JW guy from Hopkins who did hair for HBO specials and for Prince who used to talk to him. Maybe Cold Red Rain knows who I mean. My mom moved to Hopkins/Minnetonka hall after I left and will not answer any questions I've had regarding Prince/JW's and seems very uncomfortable with the whole thing. Maybe her reluctance to talk about the subject has something to do with the guy he studied with or maybe it's just his general freak like behavior.

  Did anyone see the old TV show Sinbad when Prince & Chaka Khan were on and preaching to Sinbad?? I found it hilarious!

  Do Jehovah's Witnesses have love amongst themselves..

  they certainly do, and this is forever being thrown in my face.

  however, when jesus said his desciples would have love amongst themselves, surely he didnt mean it would just be amongst themselves?

  surely it would expand further than that?

  Of course Jehovah's Witnesses have love amongst themselves. They're overflowing with it! They just define it differently than us.

  Their version of love is conditional, judgmental, petty, backstabbing, social climbing, and animosity filled. How can you love someone who's hair touches their ears, who wears a sweater and slacks instead of a full suit, and who only goes out in service once a month or someone who is, gasp,disassociated or disfellowshipped.

  Whereas we evildoers feel love rather than try to control it and believe it's unconditional. Shocking!

  Do family/relatives still hound you about going back? what do they/you say?

  no lie 10 years after i left, my family still thinks i'm coming back one day, get a grip, the last conversation i had, i kinda lost it a bit with my mom, and more or less said why would i go back, when russell/rutherford made everything up as they went along.

  well that was a conversation stopper, and my brother/sister called alittle while back, i mentioned the un thing, child abuse scandals, and a few other things, i am not kidding, they pretended that they new nothing and that these things probaly never happened, just the media making up stories, how do you reason with that ???

  i said :" well don't take their word for it, investigate yourself so you know, and read the entire watchtower history 1879-2003, read it yourself, if you are not willing to then shut up !

  Did you ever attend a NonJW Funeral?

  my brother died suddenly.

  his funeral was in the catholic church.

  his 2 jw children and their offspring actually stood in the back of the church, behind a glass wall, and observed the service.

  I'm sorry for your loss Auntie.

  Your brothers kids sound like they were torn between the borg and their father to me. How awful for all of you. Too bad it sound like the borg won the war for your brother's children's hearts.

  My dad's funeral was after I left the borg but my JW mom attended even though he was her ex husband. It was one of the few nice things she's done since I exited. I think the fact it was a non denominational service and he was an agnostic with atheist leanings was a big part of why she felt comfortable attending. The service was more of a memorial tribute and we all just talked about him. She did skip the bar hopping wake that followed though. I find it odd that she was more comfortable in a non religeous setting for a funeral for someone who did not believe in god, but had we had a minister she would have undoubtedly not attended.

  My mom used to send me letters for the first few years addressed often to my boyfriend/husband as she was refusing to talk to me. She also sent the local elders after me who hounded me on a weekly basis, 1 elder in particular until I finally DA-ed myself just to end the harassment. The harassment had gotten to the point where it was disturbing my 3 year old nephew to see me upset and he would scream "the hoovers are here!" and hide every time they showed up. (his whole family now calls them the hoovers) I was only 19 then. Had I to do it over I would call the cops. After I DA-ed the letters stopped and she slowly over the years started talking to me about once a year. She finally seems to get that I don't want to come back but still holds on to hope. Lateley when she talks in JW-ese she just sighs and gives me the so sorry your gonna die look. I think she thinks that I'll feel guilty and rejoin or something. I'd rather deal with that than the constant quoting from the reasoning book of past years.

  My First Night on the Job

  well, i had an interesting night on the job.. first, i got off the bus and walked 10 blocks to work.

  i was hurrying to try and beat this rain, but it got me when i was halfway to work.

  i had my raincoat on but it didn't do much for my pants which got soaked wet.

  Congrats on the job Yiz!

  Sounds like you had a rocky first day. Gas stations are the hubs of a neighborhood. I worked at one for a few years it was my first real job. I loved the constant stream of bizarre human behavior. Some people seem to think working in a gas station is boring but they are very wrong. My brother used to work at a Super America in one of the worst neighborhoods in Minneapolis and he figured out that if you offer the cops free coffee & doughnuts they come in more frequently and keep the thugs at bay. He cleared that plan with his manager of course.

  How Do You Handle Death?

  for most witnesses, the ressurection hope keeps survivors going.

  i knew of some jw's that were in such denial that they would want to believe that "they're just sleeping but are still alive to jehovah.

  " others would bust themselves "in the work", while others would "mourn as the nations do".

  I have the take it as it comes approach like Hamas. I also tend to laugh a little too much for some peoples comfort. Laughter is how I've always dealt with stress in general. I try not to explain that what we do not know and figure I'll find out what happens when we die eventually so why try to figure it out now.

  I hate the way the borg tries to make people emotionless in times of death to show their faith in the resurection.

  My family does what they call an irish wake. I'm not sure if it's actually an irish thing or if it's an irish american thing. They used to bring the whole body out to their favorite bar, we don't do that anymore darn public health codes, but we do take an article that reminds us the most of the person. The last one we did was for my dad, he was a Scot but learned the irish wake from my mom's family and had always wanted it done. We took his leather jacket he never took off in life and took "him" out with us to all of his favorite bars and got trashed as he would have wanted us to. It's for us the best way to deal with death, to celebrate the person's life while mourning their passing.

  Sometimes, it just ain't any fun...

  i took my kids on a vacation to disney world...their dream vacation, actually, although it didn't turn out that way.

  midway through we get a call that their grandmother (the real one, who was never a dub and who hasn't ever turned her back on the kids or on me even thru my divorce from her son, unlike my own jw mother) is in serious condition at the hospital.

  we spent one of our 'vacation' days sitting in a hospital icu waiting room, timing our 15 minute visits so that we could see her, and throughout it all the kids were troopers.
