Leaving the cult is a unique experience that can only be shared by others that have been through the same thing. Many of us "lost" our past and finding this site gave part of that back. Who else can relate to the culture we came from? And there are so many great people here!

Doesn't surprise me.
I shouldn't have been surprised, either, though this guy really takes time and seems to care. Doctor's don't get much education in diet and fitness. He sent us to the American Diabetic website and the American Heart Association website, but not one recomendation for teens.

Wow; thanks for your interest and input everyone! Some great suggestions. It's sad that even his pediatrician didn't have any recommendations.
Confession, thanks for the book suggestion and the Krav Maga link. Nos, an entire program, thank you! Jeff, I appreciate the link. Murfi, thanks for your suggestion.
I will follow up on all this and see what sounds good to him.

Overheard at the Book Study
by under_believer inhere are a few comments that i overheard at this week's book study (of the third chapter of the bible teach book), and the thoughts i had after hearing them: .
conductor: "as food shortages become more and more common as the time of the end advances, they will make excellent field service points since they were predicted by the bible.
me: great.

As food shortages become more and more common as the Time of the End advances
Nothing's changed in the past 60+ years. Wouldn't you think they'd get tired of crying the same old wolf stories? It's the same tired stuff; how do they do it?

by hippikon ina funny thing happened at the office.
with my current job i look after a team of commission based sales people (about 400 so i dont know them all intimately).
one of these sales people in a remote town started cheating the company by applying staff discounts to people who werent staff and trying to claim promotional benefits for promotions he didnt do etc.

A statement in the Watchtower that angered me...
by slimboyfat inthe study article on the "patience of jehovah" a few weeks back caused some discussion on the forum.
but there was one particular turn of phrase that stuck out in my mind concerning job:"the outcome?
jehovah "blessed the end of job afterward more than his beginning.

I always had trouble with this account. Maybe it's one of those subtle teachings that makes it so easy for witlesses to shun their own flesh and bloo. After all, jehovah will replace them with "brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers" in the borg. Twisted.

Did the Witnesses you know, see "Fortune Cookies" as evil?
by free2beme ini was in a few congregations growing up and like many things in the organization, rules were often regional.
one of those issues i remember and it was something i always got a kick out of, was people's reaction to fortune cookies at chinese food restaurants.
i had not run in to it as a child, and then i moved away as a young adult and was studying with witnesses to get baptized and they would try to make me feel more welcome, by inviting me to meals with other witnesses in the congregation.

Wow! As uptight and rightesous as my family was, we never had a problem with fortune cookies. We even visited a factory once while on vacation and devoured an entire bag of fresh, crispy cookies.

They can take from you, they just can't give.
