I guess I am an egoistic person: I never enjoyed a gift which told me that someone has donated something to charity. (there is a small insurance company here - sending each year a letter which is telling me "we have donated the amount else involved in the Christmas-cards to charity - and then I am thinking : you could have forget that letter as well and spent the money for the stamps as well for charity.)
I am not interested in the welfare gifts of others.
I think that it ain't opportune to let the world know that I (or whoever involved) is such a "good" person.
and in biblical terms: is'nt somewhere written that you would'nt let your left hand know what your right hand is giving ?
I do however admire the gift suggestions that some people made on occasion of their marriage or other special occasion telling: ïnstead of a present donate to (a specified) charity.

Apart of all of this, I think that it is very healthy to spent money and gifts to your beloved ones as well...................
We have a little saying here: "Verbeter de wereld, begin bij jezelf" (Make the world a better place, start with yourself.)
