Buy a donkey for Christmas

It is often difficult to see past the crass commercialism that is associated with Christmas.

Instead of buying one another presents, some families collect the money they would have spent on one another and donate it to a genuine charity to enable them to buy a donkey, a well, support for an orphaned child, or some other essential need for villagers in a struggling Third World country.

I made a blood donation yesterday on behalf of all Witnesses who died due to lack of adequate health care.

You don't even have to "band together" to do it - check out Heifer International

    Vivamus,

I do charity all year round. CHRISTMAS is MY time for presents

    My hero!

But seriously, a couple years ago I gave Heifer International a big chunk-o-change, and they sent me a handful of cards that said "A donation to Heifer International has been made in your name by ___Gently Feral___." Then I gave them to half a dozen of my nearest & dearest. They all told me it was the best present they'd ever gotten. So you can kill two birds with one stone fulfill two Christmas dreams without being either cheap or snarky.

I guess I am an egoistic person: I never enjoyed a gift which told me that someone has donated something to charity. (there is a small insurance company here - sending each year a letter which is telling me "we have donated the amount else involved in the Christmas-cards to charity - and then I am thinking : you could have forget that letter as well and spent the money for the stamps as well for charity.)

I am not interested in the welfare gifts of others.

I think that it ain't opportune to let the world know that I (or whoever involved) is such a "good" person.

and in biblical terms: is'nt somewhere written that you would'nt let your left hand know what your right hand is giving ?

I do however admire the gift suggestions that some people made on occasion of their marriage or other special occasion telling: ïnstead of a present donate to (a specified) charity.

Apart of all of this, I think that it is very healthy to spent money and gifts to your beloved ones as well...................

We have a little saying here: "Verbeter de wereld, begin bij jezelf" (Make the world a better place, start with yourself.)

G'day Country Woman! Nice to 'see' you again!

I do so agree with this:

(there is a small insurance company here - sending each year a letter which is telling me "we have donated the amount else involved in the Christmas-cards to charity - and then I am thinking : you could have forget that letter as well and spent the money for the stamps as well for charity.)

I think that it ain't opportune to let the world know that I (or whoever involved) is such a "good" person.

I have always thought that sending the gift card implies that the gift to charity was only given because it was a substitute for a gift to a friend or loved one. Why not give a gift to both?

Like you say, a case of "blowing your trumpet" !
