My mother tells me about the wake to which I'm going to today even though I honestly never met the man but in the same call my mother tells me I need to go to the memorial on sunday or whenever it is....I told her I already made plans to meet an old friend whom I just got back in contact with's fiancee and see his new house. She hung up. Ah what a twisted and tangled web we weave...

Anybody play slide guitar? Any pointers?
by avishai ini'm learning to play guitar, and have mostly been goofing off w/ the slide, in open tunings.
any pointers?

Odd numbered frets sound best together just as even numbered frets sound best together though all that changes once you get up to the 12th fret, then it's kinda a hit or miss kind of thing. Don't go to fast either then people don't hear the sliding, that's about all. Good luck it's alot of fun. I play guitar alot but I'm mostly in a drop D tuning or at least a half step lower.

Goth/Punk/Metalhead/Rivethead XJWs on this forum
by ColdRedRain ini've noticed that alot of jw youth that leave the faith in their late teens and early twenties become one of those 4 things, yet i haven't seen many in this forum.
it might also be that i'm not here that often (380 posts since oct of '02).
anyways, if there are any, speak up.

How have you changed since finding this forum?
by happehanna in.
my friends and daughters say that i am more relaxed and i seem happier in my own skin.
which is just great, but when i first started reading stuff here i was a quivering mess, i was in shock, but spending more time researching things are now slotting into place.. .

How has this board effected me? I find myself masturbating far more often....j/k er maybe. The people here are really nice, basically I'm a writer and writing a story about JW as somewhat of a healing process. This forum provides endless ideas for stuff to throw in. Also due to the lighthearted nature it's nicer than the bitter sites that are out there. Those sites just make it seem like sour grapes, here it's like "It didn't fit with me, it's all good I'm better now" I like that mentality because it's the one I share.

What's The Most Traumatic Thing That's Ever Happened To You As A Witness?
by minimus inwhen you look back at your witness life, you probably can see that you were regularly exposed to traumatic conditions and situations because you were a jw.
thinking back, was there anything that stood out in your mind that especially wounded you?
-
Tuesday
It wasn't one thing particularly that was traumatic it was kinda three fold in the matter of two months. First the one person I identified with at the hall who was a ministerial servant (the only one that was really nice and cool to me, I even looked up to the guy) got married and moved to another hall, then one of my best friends my longest friend since I was 7 left the hall, then the girl I had a MAJOR crush on was disfellowshipped. She was kinda like the ministerial servant I mentioned earlier because she was real cool and nice to me, once they were gone there were like three people who would talk to me in the hall. That was the beginning of the end for me in "the truth".

What do you do?
by desib77 ini know most jws are encouraged to take worthless jobs and barely scrape by so as to spend more time in the ministry.
i was fortunate to have my dad encourage me to do something more with my life than house cleaning.
i followed in his steps and became a civil draftsman....(draftsperson .

Well I went to a Junior college the year before I left the witnesses to be a Computer Programmer, it was a 2 year "acceptable" program. While I was there I found I didn't want to make video games I liked writing them so I switched majors and went to a real university where I got an academic scholarship. Well I majored in English there because I thought I'd never get a job with a Creative Writing degree and hated it, finally switched to Creative Writing and ran out of Financial Aid. So now I'm a semester away from graduation but all is well I have a job at Metlife doing customer service that will pay for that last semester. Lovely eh? If I were to run down my jobs it would take the rest of the board so I'll just stop by the cool ones, secretary for the water dept of the State, Mortgage Underwriter, Denyer of insurance claims and Accountant at Providence Journal.

Politics - What to think of them.....
by desib77 ini was raised as a jw.
didn't leave until i was around 19 years old.
i've found that i know nothing about politics because of my upbringing.

I'm always interested in politics. Basically all it took was something that I believed in, I didn't agree with the Iraq war and that got me REALLY into politics. When I first left I would just vote to vote but now I'm "trying to change the world". Wish there was actually some politician who could do it.

Passing the time at JW Assemblies
by Leolaia inlove_truth, in describing the utter dullness of jw assemblies and conventions, just gave me an interesting idea for a thread.
what were some of the ways you tried to make the hours pass?
some of mine: looking at the interesting refracting patterns the arena floodlights made on my eyeglasses when looking thru them at an angle.looking for people i knew from my congregation and others in the mass of people in the arena.counting the number of people leaving the section to go to the bathroompractice writing people's names in elvish scripthaving a conversation with friends a row behind me by passing notes back and forthseeing how many pages of my bible stick together when i slam a wad of gum in between its pages.. what else?

Here's my funny story, while growing up saturdays were the worst because I was addicted to cartoons and saturday wrestling it was my one day I could be myself around my non-JW father. I loved saturdays, so one year my father bought me one of those handheld t.v's well my friend Jonathan convinces me that I can put my hand up to my ear so as to lean on it and listen to the cartoons. Now that's all well and good but you really can't listen to wrestling but I aquiesced and just listened to all of it. The morning was going all well and good till around 11 o'clock which is when Superstars began. For those who remember this is also the time when the baptism talk began. Honestly it's been a while so I don't remember who was wrestling at the time but sure enough I hear in Vince McMahon's distinctive growl (this was back in the day when he was "just a commentator") "Oh my God, did you see that move! That was the most amazing move I've ever seen" a small tear was forming in the corner of my eye at this point, "Folks that is so great we're going to have to show a replay of this", a visible frown could be seen on my face, "because after this replay I doubt you'll ever see a move like this ever again in your entire life!" I screamed "Nooooooooooooooo". I'll just say Bad Timing because it was the only time in history the word No was said for the questions during the Baptism talk. I still haven't gotten my handheld t.v. back. I was 11 honestly, you think in 12 years all would be forgiven?

"Dogma" by Kevin Smith
by dustyb inwho's seen the movie dogma?

I saw this probably a month after I left the witnesses, awesome movie! I'm a huge fan of all Kevin Smith movies. Dogma is my movie if I'm in a philosophical mood, Chasing Amy if I'm feeling a bit dirty, Clerks just after work and Mallrats for how I spend my free time. Everyone tells me that I'm like the embodiment of Body. Plus after seeing that movie who hasn't tried to get a girl to scream out their favorite New Kid in bed? Getting back to the point Dogma is a highly recommended film, makes you think and it's funny.
