New 'Asleep', uh, I mean, 'Awake' information on b-days....
by TallTexan ini was looking in one of the more recent copies of the awake and there is a question from the readers on pinatas.
i won't go into the whole thing, but in the response, at one point, the awake says that (paraphrase) "the bible puts birthdays in a bad light.
however (and i love that word, 'cuz it implies, 'well, we've changed our minds again') if a practice has no current false religious attachments, then it is up to each individual to decide what they will do".....that's not verbatim, but it's close enough.

I can't wait to get hold of a copy of this - to show the smug elder who brings mum's mags...
*Why* is it that the org didn't just reply "*No* this does *not* refer to Christmas and birthdays" - I'm sure not so long ago they would have. I'm sure the person who wrote asking believes that they're now a conscience issue, well got that perspective on it to begin with anyway (probably until elders told them off!).
It seems like they screwed up by not reseaching Pinatas (and before that there were letters about whether it's OK for a Christian to go to a Luau wasn't there) and instead of saying "whoops, yeah, they're evil, our fault" - they're seemingly digging themselves into a bigger hole but at the same time saying it's still wrong - but at the same time saying it's not *currently* wrong. It's a muddle.
I read out the quote from the original thread to my mum and she just looked stunned - I said "well that clears things up!" jokingly and she said "it's very confusing" *seriously*. Hehe I think she's been away from JWs for too long if she's seeing what's written rather than what is *menat*! Well at least she didn't seem to feel too guilty when we had a day out with friends for my birthday last week! -

Memorial 2000. Before that it was Memorial 1999 - then before that it was a couple of months previously when I attended the bookstudy for a while in another neighbourhood (boundary change and mum didn't get on with the new bookstudy host *at all* from way back!). Hadn't been to a Sunday meeting since about 1995 and hadn't been to a Service meeting since... god knows, maybe since about 1993, even then it was infequent (finished late, lived a bus-ride away from the KH, school in the morning, etc)
Still 100% believed it though - until I saw Panorama, and eventaully found this place - then it all crumbled in one go. -

Well, I have a GMail account ...
by Simon in... all i need now is a good dollop of spam so i can test the searching and filtering !
i must say, having 1gb of space for free is quite 'wierd'.
the hotmail account i have hovers on the 80% full mark (mainly from spam) and is to all purposes unusable.

I can't wait for gmail to become more available.
My Yahoo accounts have always been 6mb not 4mb cos I signed up for them over 5 years ago when it was 6mb... but *who care* about 2mb when now there's magically 100mb! Hurrah!
The downsides to gmail are that it's impossible to delete mail (not certain), and that your messages get searched for keywords to direct google's text ads at you. But the ad-directing thing probably happens on Yahoo and Hotmail with them not being as up front about it. -

Do you trust JW's?
by desib77 ini guess i'm asking in more of a business aspect?
or in any kind of dealings with them.....for example, because of their morals honesty is "supposed" to be practiced.
would you hire one because of this?

I've found that doing business with JWs is not a good idea - there's no "mate's rates" with the JWs we've got quotes from in the past (unless they're *majorly* ripping off their other clients) - and if you do get ripped off you have no comeback like you would with a worldly plumber etc as you can't take a brother to court, etc etc.
In personal matters you can't really trust them not to grass you up to the elders like they're *meant to*!
I'm generally wary anyway, but I've been let down by many JWs and seen others let down by them. There's not many people I *absolutely* trust - just many people I would trust with certain things. -

what's your favority JW reference from a movie or TV ?
by itsallgoodnow in.
mine is from friday, the movie with ice cube, where a couple of jw ladies wake up ice cube's character's family one morning and there's some mouthing off, and you wouldn't believe the nasty words coming out of these sweet looking old "sisters".
hilarious!.

The rest of the big Blondie quoted is:
Farmer: Jehovah's Witness?
Scully: No, sir. Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Mulder: But we do have a copy of the Watchtower, if you'd like. :D
My favourite which I unfortunately don't remember much of was from an episode of "Maid Marian and Her Merry Men" a *fantastic* BBC kid's show. It involved a comment made when they were using a battering ram to break down the door of the castle:
One Character: You don't think the guards'll come do you?
Other Character: No, they'll just think we're Jehovah's Witnesses. -

For you dog owners, ever feed your dog Pop Rocks? It's funny as hell!
Of course I still miss my poor dead dog even after 2.5 years, but now I wish even more that he was still alive as that sounds like great fun! -

What little things used to excite you as a JW?
by doodle-v ini would get excited when i was younger and would study the watchtower and see that this weeks study only had 19 paragraphs.
(made the study seem shorter,lol).
when a meeting would get canceled because of snow (which was rare) and i would get to stay home and watch a cheers or the cosby show.

The last Thursday of the month when we had goodies to eat after the bookstudy.
The new year's text.
The Bible drama at the assembly.
The Written Review (when I was very small, we stopped going to the Service meeting when I was about 9 as it was too far to travel at that time on a school night.), because my dad took us to a family-friendly pub on Saturday nights and occasionally when we had been there they had quizzes, and I was good at them and Written Review was almost the same!
Slide shows.
New releases.
Ice-cream at the Circuit Assembly, Danishes and free cups of tea at the District Assembly.
