Do you remember when some women asked to be called Ms? The sky fell down then too.

Free Speech - Jordan Peterson Debate Live 9:30 EST Saturday
by cofty inprofessor jordan peterson of the university of toronto will be streaming a live debate on his youtube channel on the topic of free speech and "bill c-16".. if you haven't heard (where have you been?
) peterson has been making waves by opposing the demands of pc "social justice warriors" at the u of t to use their chosen gender neutral pronouns.
in his judgement proposed "bill-c16" will make his non-compliance illegal - an egregious threat to free speech.. professor peterson is an intelligent and thoughtful academic who has found himself at the focus of attacks from the neo-marxists that are dominating the conversation at elite universities.

Election Post-Mortem
by Simon ini'm sure many people, republicans included, are shocked at the results of the 2016 presidential election.
really, wtf!.
the polls were wrong and although it's tempting to blame voter suppression and fbi interference, that would just avoid looking at the real issues for the loss.

The only positives I can think of right now is at least some of the PC nonsense might be trashed
Such as? And how?

Need some advice Re: JW marking by a family member
by William Penwell inso anyone that has read some of my posts on here over the years knows i have done the slow fade over the last 30 years.
i do not claim to be a jw and have not being in a kingdum hall now to attend a meeting or convention for religious reasons for almost 15 years.
now i know the discussion on here from this past dc was the rank and file dubs have being pressured to distance themselves away from family members that are no longer active dubs that they deem are not living up to wt bible principals.

I'd tell her that while her decision makes you sad, it is her choice and that your door will always be open to her if she ever has a change of heart.

I provided two examples from this thread of calls for greater restrictions on freedom of religion.
Which occured after your initial comment. Which still leaves the question why you made your initial post when no one had suggested that free speech should be quashed?

Seven people disagree that they have a right to state their beliefs about sexuality. Those seven people are enemies of a free society.
Cofty, are you mind reader? How do you know the reason people disliked your comment?
I didn't like or dislike it but it did seem irrelevant to any of the previous posts.

One Thing I Don't Get About Brexit
by JW_Rogue inhow did such a weighty decision get put directly in the hands on the average citizen?
and with only a simple majority required?
in the usa the biggest thing that people vote on directly is city building projects or infrastructure.

The decision is not "directly in the hands of the average citizen" as the outcome is not legally binding. The decision remains with Westminster as to how it responds to the referendum.
Ignoring the outcome may well be political suicide though.

Islam is a religion of peace (2)
by Coded Logic inin behalf of the horrific events of saturday night, i just wanted to take a moment to remind everyone that islam is a religion of peace.
it doesn’t matter that the quran explicitly says that homosexuals should be stoned to death (7:84) - it’s still a religion of peace.
and it doesn’t matter that the scriptures say that all gay men should be killed (sunan 1:152) - islam doesn’t in anyway condone violence.. it doesn’t matter that every mainstream imam calls homosexuality a sin "worse the adultery" - it’s not a religion of bigotry.. it doesn’t matter that 61% of muslims in the uk think gay acts should be made illegal - islam has nothing against the gay community.. it doesn’t matter that countries with sharia law actively persecute the lgbt community - islam is all about peace and love.

Here is Australia 50 years ago there were prison sentences for homosexuality and the state governments have apologised for their stand to homosexuals that were imprisoned. This position is now seen like the dark ages and some of the young generation just find it hard to believe.
And yet Australia didn't make discrimination against LGBT people unlawful until 2013 and 60% of young LGBT Australians report experiencing homophobic verbal abuse. Being gay in Australia isn't exactly dreamy Barry, check some facts, more facts, or a recent claim that Australia is one of the west's most homophobic countries.
Presumably that homophobic abuse comes from immigrants only?

Witness Carts - A Vehicle for Significant Decline
by slimboyfat ini was stalking to a jw today about her recent experience on the carts and with being a jw generally.
until this conversation i considered the carts as just an ineffective preaching method and a harmless waste of time.
but now i wonder if the effect of the carts might be to produce noticeable decline in jw numbers.

I reckon they've got more carts in Edinburgh than Glasgow. I've seen them at Waverley station, Charlotte Square, the Royal Mile, Nicholson Street and Bruntsfield.
In Glasgow I've only ever seen them on Great Western Road next to Oran Mor and under the cavernous highland man's umbrella at the central station.I think they're reducing here: they've disappeared from Middle Meadow Walk and the roof of the Waverley Market, rare at the West End, sporadic on the Royal Mile and on St Andrew Sq: I've spent the last 2 days working on the latter and watched the JWs and the carts and there was zero interaction with the public. It looks mind numbing but at least they've topped up their tans this week.
