Isn`t that statement "Bad associations spoil useful habits " just plain common sense ?
Any Tom Dick or Harry could have told us that.
It`s not as if it`s a GOD inspired thought .
it has been interesting for me to learn the various ways that the jws twist the scriptures to fit their own dogma.
(of course jws aren't alone in that, but that's another topic.
) two quick examples of jws not following or going beyond the bible are blood and birthdays.

i don't have the link but i am trying to post this, this is from a previous post on jwn.
watchtower bible and tract society of new york, inc. dear brothers:.. we received your letter of december 17 in which you inquire about handling a situation involving a brother who has been guilty of serious violation of the law in the past.. you explained that you received information indicating that this brother ?committed several murders and crimes before his baptism.
you ask if law obligates some action on our part.
I was just wondering ?
Has anybody ever downloaded /copied this letter and sent it to a National Newspaper or a Current Affairs TV broadcast anywhere in the world ?
Surely an investigative journalist of the media could have a ball digging into the background of this letter from the JW HQ. ?
Wouldn`t it be a story worth telling ?

Welcome Kathy hussey
,I hope you stick around ,I liked your first post ,not that I`m in agreement with it but that`s what you can do here and not what you can do in the WT/JW religion without repercussions.
no JW becomes one & gets baptized without already being fully aware of all that they're expected to do and not do as one of JW's.
True ,the interpretation JW`s have given to the person studying based on the Watchtower and not the Bible ,sure they use the Bible but its to give the WT `s interpretation of what the scriptures mean.
it's not as if those joining are deceived or fooled about anything they're agreeing to because the process is an involved one to actually be approved as a candidate ready to get baptized, and be a JW.
The majority of people on this board would have real reason to dispute that statement as would anybody who has left the religion after being in it for many years ,myself 32 years.
They ensure you have thorough understanding so no one is duped or misled in any way.
They ensure you have a thorough understanding of what the GB/WT understanding of Jehovah`s Witness teachings are but that`s not what the Bible teaches .
Do your research on 607-1914 ,the generation that would not pass away .1914 when Armageddon was first supposed to happen.1925 when all the faithful were to be resurrected and live and be Princes , at Beth Sarim where "Judge Ruthered lived.1975 when Armageddon was supposed to occur, after 6000 years of human existence on this earth.
The ludicrous explanation of their failed doctrine" the generation that would not pass away since 1914" to be an overlapping generation ? ,come on ,their really scraping the barrel with that one.
how gullible can one get.!
All the flip flops of doctrine , beliefs ,and practices over the years, and continually revising their own history.
And to answer the OP Q? I would say yes bad associations can spoil useful habits ,I have no problem with that statement.
Take care.
theres a couple of threads re: 1914 on the board right now and it got me thinking.. the jw doctrine of the 1914 generation is a key doctrine , yet it is probably the number one reason most have left over the decades.. 1975- within one generation.. 1995 - new understanding of the word generation.. 2010- overlapping generation first mentioned- some anointed survive armageddon.. 2015- infamous overlapping generations chart featuring david splane.. its obvious the org is changing the goalposts and constantly trying to squeeze as much time as they can before they have to abandon this altogether.
or will they come up with something new?.
does anyone else think this ever changing doctrine is responsible for the biggest loss of members?.
1975- within one generation.
1995 - new understanding of the word generation.
2010- overlapping generation first mentioned- some anointed survive armageddon.
2015- infamous overlapping generations chart featuring David Splane.
Correct me if I am wrong but has there been a big decrease in membership ?
The last I heard was something like 8.5 million JW`s worldwide a few years ago ,what is the number now in 2022 ?
A big decrease or not ?
How many are you saying is now the number of active JW` s worldwide ?
Significantly less than 8 .5 million Jehovah`s witnesses ?
And can you verify it ?
i am wondering if a jw accused to be a murderer (or any other serious crime except csa) in a judicial committee would be reported to the police.. if i sexually abused or molested a child, i would not be reported to the police.. what about if i killed a person: would i be instead?.
it is not a matter of being right or wrong but i am only curious to know if there is at least a sort of coherence regarding the internal policies for serious crimes....
I don`t believe they would report it to the police , as that would likely bring reproach on Jehovah`s name. So I would agree with what stan livedeath has said ,they would DF him or her and absolve themselves from any connection to the crime. They can say he or she is not a JW .
obviously not the orgs brightest moment for teaching that the generation of 1914 would be alive to see paradise.
forget the "new light" that bought them an extra 100 years, which if any other religion would've done this, the org would scream false religion.
the fact is that for 75 years this #1 recruiting message from the society was a lie.. i asked a current jw to get a calculator and do the math: 2022 - 1914 = an angry reaction.
Jehovah`s Witnesses have invested time and money being a part of this religious organization believing what the Governing body of this religion tells them to accept.
Th"New truths" / "Old truths" doctrines confuses the issues at hand.
A rationale intelligent person can see that an old truth is not a truth at all.......and never was.
And a new truth that turns out to be an old truth is not a truth at all..........and never was.
How many "New Truths" can you relate over the 100 plus years of this religions history that have become" Old truths" ?
is it okey to express your love for jesus as a jehovah's witness?.
it should be, even though it would lift some eyebrows in the congregation.
let's see what jesus said:.
I love the way Jesus never used the Name of his father, as in the text you cited and all others.
Is it because JESUS knew that his name was, as recorded in Phil.2:10,11 was who his followers Christians ,were to put their faith and trust / acknowledge in for salvation.
is it okey to express your love for jesus as a jehovah's witness?.

My understanding is that Jesus is an after thought and only to be used in mention at the closing of a prayer.
All the attention and worship is to be given to the father who they erroneously call JEHOVAH and not the more correct pronunciation in English YAHWEH ,suggested by the WT publication "Aid To Bible Understanding"
someone made reference in another post that the awake magazine had ceased publication.
maybe i missed it since i have not been on here as much in the last 6 months.
is this true?
When it does come back it will be one magazine half of which will be the WT and the other half will be Awake and it could have the caption " Watctower is Awake to Bible Prophecies & world Events"
can a witness date and court a jw student if he intends to get baptized?
.
True story:
I became interested in the JW`s via a workmate in early 1959 ,as a 20 y.old with a girl friend .I shared my new found beliefs with my GF and she followed me in accepting a Bible study .We planned on getting married but we couldn`t get married by a P.O. in a KH unless we were baptized.
There were very few KH`s in Melbourne at that time ,the hall / meetings we were going to was a rented hall in a Melb, suburb.
In November of 1960 we were both baptized at a CA and our experience was a part of the program by the bro./ workmate who first contacted me as an incidental witness given at a workplace to fellow workers.
In Feb, 1961 we were married in a neighboring Kingdom Hall by a Presiding Overseer who came over from the other side of Melbourne to conduct the service.
I just thought I would share our experience.
