Just choose something normal, for heaven's sake. Don't even give your child a weird middle name.

900 Top Scientists Sign Statement Skeptical of Macro-Evolution

Just popping in here to say that perhaps Perry was thinking of me, not cofty. I said a while back that the human genome is not composed of code, but rather of building instructions. My point was that the actual process of cell division is like a computer program (code) which acts upon data (the DNA). This program for cell replication is much simpler and therefore easier to imagine the evolution of. In reality, the situation is more complicated than that, and the code/data distinction is probably a dubious analogy to use. But 'twas I who said it, not cofty.

preface question:
by mohrb inorder of operations is important, so, i'll ask a question before i make assumptions and start "fixing things.".
obviously, the site heavily encourages the viewpoint of former j-dubs and others who have disagreements with the political posturing of the wbts.
i get that, and see your points.

mohrb, I appreciate what you're saying, but as cofty said, you are exaggerating a fair bit in representing the tone of this forum. Only a few posters here are promoting tin-foil hat theories about the Society. It is true that many here use strong language regarding the Society, and I don't personally approve of that, but we've had the debate numerous times about the image we give to believing JWs, and the problem is that the forum is primarily here for people to express themselves freely, not to proselytize to JWs (but yes, there are a few "true believers" here as well).
Despite the vitriol that some express for the org., the fact is that there are still lots of level-headed posters writing intelligently on various thought-provoking subjects. It's a very JW-esque approach to take stock of the occasionally chaotic forum and then suggest that we need to organize and get our ducks in a row. Can't happen, won't happen. Former JWs are a diverse group of people. Many of us simply do not agree with each other on many matters. That's okay. Vive la difference. Also, there will never be a widely-organized movement among active, doubting JWs. The climate within the org. is too fearful for people to raise their voices in dissent.
Finally I'd just like to say that many of us were once mentally where you are, and as we continued to learn more information about the org. and the Bible and the world at large... well, we got to where we are now! Your thoughts are very much still being corraled by the Society's information control. If you take the time to read the more scholarly topics around here, you will start to consider the more fundamental questions that underlie the assumptions you are making now. Then you'll understand why we have no interest in reforming the Society.

by joe134cd ini was talking to an uber dub friend last night who lives in the san diego area.
he knew nothing of the $13.5 million dollar law suit.
when i tried to tell him that this is a systemic problem, and that this could perhaps be the tip of the ice burgh.

to which the defendant replied, “God bless you.”
So, clearly not a Witness. Which is why I'm still unsure why so many JWs invested with her. What was her connection to the religion? Or was it just that some high-profile JWs happened to invest first, and they recruited others who trusted them?

Was the Biblical Canon Directed by God?
by Chris Tann inthis is a question a sincere christian may agonize over after learning that some books of the bible were rejected by certain early christian groups, while other books that did not make the canon were accepted.
also, when one realizes that so called inspired writers of the greek scriptures quote from apocrypha, that most christians reject today, one wonders if these writings that include these quotes should even be in the bible.. it is true that when it comes to the christian greek scriptures the canon has been closed for many centuries.
also, these books have been accepted by christians ever since the second, perhaps first, century.

Chris Tann, I suggest you take some hours to read over the material posted on that site, particularly the entries for Genesis and Exodus. The Meribah accounts are just a piece of a larger puzzle that you haven't seen yet. That being said, what did you think of the fact that the Israelites said "if only we had expired in Egypt" after 40 years had passed and the ones who had lived in Egypt were already dead? These sorts of oddities are evidence for the documentary hypothesis, and if you aren't familiar with it, you owe it to yourself to read up on it. The Contradictions site is one way to learn about it, starting with the articles in the Essential Reading sidebar.

Find What Your Social Status Was in the Congregation
by Mary inever notice how the "happiest people on earth" are also the most class-oriented?
the social structure in the congregation is more complex than the blueprints of a nuclear warhead, but just so that you "remember your place", see if you can find where your niche was/is:.
1. at the top of the social order of things within the congregation is of course, the presiding overseer and his family.
