(c) st. petersburg times, published november 11, 2001. the american flag has truly come into its own in recent weeks, replacing suction-cupped garfield's as the accouterment of choice for our cars.. everywhere you look, the flag is hanging out of car windows-unless there is a football game and the local team flag takes precedence.
I agree 100% that it was wrong what happened to the JWs in the 1940's. And as has been stated here, the laws have been changed.
One question though, that has always gone through my mind, how much of this abuse did the JWs bring upon themselves?
While agree that people can choose to believe or not believe in whatever they want, how "wise" is it shove it in someone else's face?
What did the JWs expect to happen when they "invaded" a small town and told those people that their religion was a bunch of bs? And then they would march in front of the local churchs.
Again, it is wrong to physically attack someone for their beliefs but I think that the JWs also share a small part of the blame.
I get so tired of the comparision of MLK's movement and the JWs. The two do not compare.

Why would Jehovah have the FDS preach for some seventy odd years that those living and witnessing the events of 1914 would live to see the end of this system of things?
C'mon, let's be honest here. I believe that deep down in their hearts, most JWs do NOT believe that Jehovah directs the FDS.

true, i was never baptized but i was jw for 21 years (born into it).
i was able to weasel my way out of various meetings for about a year then i got married and moved out of my parents house and just totally stopped going all together.
No offense but why would you want the elders to stop by? Just to give them some shi*? Maybe I'm just having a flash back to when I was an elder. Just always irked me when someone told me to shove it up my *** and then bitch to his or her family that the elders never stopped by.
Anyway, the elders in your area probably have their hands full chasing after all the ones who are baptized. I don't ever remember calling on someone who was unbaptized unless they were working toard baptism.

mine is stupid, but thoroughly humiliating at the same time.. my mother made me wear high heels for the first time to an assembly when i was 15 years old.
it was all snow and ice that day, but i made it inside fine without slipping.. during the first session, the naughty girl that i was, had gotten bored, so i decided to go to the restroom.. i guess the floors were wet or something, because i slipped and fell down about 17 or 18 steps.... head over heels, quite literally.. i landed at the bottome with my dress up over my head, showing off all my under "wares: lol!.
Hey Puffsrule, that's where I took the plunge. Remember how small that "pool" was? It was more like a tub! And there was no where for people to stand and watch. LOL. But that was kind of a cool assembly hall. As a kid I spent many a lunch break exploring it.
the time is circa 1995, i have just been dfed for challenging the towers right to dictate to me what i can or cannot do professionally.
the web is in its infancy (im talking archaic days as in windows 3.1), i go on aol and put up a thread on x-jws on their bulletin board.
i am thrilled to have alvinas a current jw respond with kindness and understanding as she mirrors the same issues i wrote about.

I remember those days. I clearly recall getting my first modem for the C64 and finding sites that had downloads to "crack" C64 games so that you could copying them. LOL. I thought I was such a hacker! LOL.

I love how the WT develops a belief and THEN goes about finding experts to support it. Heck, you find some expert to support just about anything you want. There are even so-called "experts" who will state that the Holocaust never happened.
I have found that when it comes to explaining a religious belief, the longer the explination, the more BS it usually contains.
i read someone's commment about the pagan origins of pretzels, which i didn't know.
i'd like to share with my kids other items or customs that are also pagan in origin, like wedding rings and the wedding cake.
i want them to see that christmas isn't the only tradition with roots in pagan religion that have changed meaning over the years.. any others out there?

Hey Gary, I guess when I say "pagan" or hear that word used I think of something non-Christian. Not bad or good, just non-Christian. All I'm try to do is explain to my two kids (who have a JW mom you pumps them full of WT teachings) that many, MANY things we do and say have "pagan" origins. And I do believe what your saying about "controlling" people by using the term "pagan." I know that their mom does as well as the WT does. As soon as something is labeled "pagan", the mind shuts and there is no reasoning on the matter. Kind of like when a JW labels someone as an apostate. Control indeed.
