  Question about JWs and Higher Education (part 2)

  hey all!.

  a couple of days ago, i posted a thread about jws and higher education.

  that question was regarding jws who finished high school.. now, my question is this for both jws and xjws alike: are there any jws who before converting did have a college education (4 year bachelors, master or phd) that you know or met?.

  Well, the JW's who knew Bro X, the attorney, thought he was great. Legal advice at a reduced rate! Too bad he was a raging alcoholic. (my mother dated him for awhile ...she dated just about everyone tho..) Once they figured out that the Will he drew up was not legal (too many errors) they stopped coming around so much. This was due to his drinking though.

  They seemed to want what the person had to offer, but were afraid that the educated one might rub off...what if my child/spouse/friend wants to do that? They would have to go to college.

  I know when I went to the community college for my first two years, I got many snide comments. Going to the university was the death knoll.

  Regarding attorneys-

  I would think that there are not that many JW attorneys...unless the WTBTS puts them through law school. And we know the stance on higher ed!

  It would make sense to get outside counsel. It is priviledged. No matter what they find out, they cannot tell. So, regarding issues like child molestation, the attorneys cannot run to the authorities unless they know a crime is going to be committed. This would be unlikely. The law firm would be sued for malpractice.

  I am a paralegal. If there is money on the table, an attorney will work for anyone, doing anything. Beliefs or disagreements with the philosophy of the org do not seem to matter.

  There is a suburb of Columbus, Ohio called GahAnna. Did you mean GahEnna of the bible fame? Note the spelling...

  When my mother heard I was moving to GAHANNA, OH, she thought that there were biblical implications....perhaps it is the devils outpost!! Honest...

  Aman, I knew of one man who joined the JW with a college degree. He was an attorney. His wife joined first and he followed. Of course. He did not last long. He is the only one I can remember having any college when they joined.

  pot smoking has been possible without police interferance in holland for years.

  now with portugal lifting virtually all anti-drugs legislation, belgium joining the dutch in decriminalising cannabis, and britain reducing it from a class b to a class c drug (making it on a par with abusing perscription drugs), the only question is when will the usa give up it wasteful and pointless 'war on drugs'?

  get with the program uncle sam, don't be part of the problem which leads to massive criminal activity devoted to supplying substances whose use is a victimless crime!.

  I do like the "cooking with it" idea. Just think...cannabis brownies (remember Barney Miller?), soup, heck, any item you want to serve. Just add some and watch your friends and family relaxxxx....

  What a way to throw a party. And it would be less calories. Eat your dinner and you won't have room for munchie snacks!

  Though you might need a NO-Doz to keep the party going!

  I don't know about that! I do recall the "munchies" afterwards. You were compelled to eat snacks after smoking it.

  With all the anti-tobacco things we have going on here, it will never happen. Unfortunately.

  There are so many social and economical ramifications to legalization. I think it is similar to alcohol. It does not make you want to do harder drugs. I did harder drugs when I drank! However, that is a major arguement here.

  Too bad. If I am going to walk into a smoky, stinky bar, I would at least rather smell pot...its smells better! And everyone in the bar would be relaxed!

  Hypocrisy Within My Own Family

  yesterday my brother (ever-loyal witness baptized same day as me 10 years ago; who is married to a holier-than-thou regular pioneer and subsequently with her encouragement has since avoided me as much as possible since i da myself) and his wife (see description above) came over to visit.. well.. shooting the proverbial shit, we got to the topic of movies.

  asking politely if he or his wife had seen lord of the rings.. she interjected that it was inappropriate because it suggested wizardry and spiritism, and would never see such filth.

  trying very hard to remain polite, my mom noticed the pause and said if they wanted to borrow any movies we have on tape to watch at home.. sneaky as i am, while they flapped their gums with my parents i glanced in the bag to see what they borrowed.. they took:.

  Reborn-you are in the Chicago vicinity....go get a good Italian Beef sandwich (with peppers) or Vienna Hot Dog. You will immediately feel better.

  I understand also. I don't get much response to my posts. Lots of reads, no response. Perhaps its my anger that comes out sometimes at some of the JW issues I respond to. Or perhaps it is the stupid screen name I choose. Either way, don't sweat it.

  I have not seen LOTR. However, I mentioned it to my mother and she said it and Harry Potter are full of demons, so she will not see them. I laughed. The Star Wars analogy is OK, though. She won't miss that one. They are hypocrites. So is my mother. Big time, on many issues.

  Regarding your nephew, perhaps as he gets older you can get him alone. Whether it be a ball game or a trip to Wal-Mart. Anything to be apart of his life. Let him know you are not "satan's seed" as you might be called when you are not around.

  Define spirituality

  define spirituality if you can.. what does the society mean when they talk of being spiritual?.

  all i could figure out is just someone who follows the rules.. so if there is no god is spirituality meaning less or something still desirable?

  Who was a squeaky clean dub?

  i'm wondering if the majority here were seriously conservative squeaky clean dubs?

  i took the whole thing very seriously.

  there seems to be such a fun element here - i can't imagine everyone being those dull folk all decked out in their wt uniform with accompanying plastic expressions.. marilyn

  I seem to be the only one who broke all the 'rules.' I apparently did not believe all the crap back then, so, WTF.

  I am embarrassed I told what I did.

  On the brighter side, my reckless youth ended when I started working full time. No money or time to party.

  i've posted several times about how i'm fed up with the witnesses but my wife won't budge.

  she's become a bit more tolerant lately, but mostly we get along better when we don't talk about anything substantive.

  i've been working up the nerve to tell the elders why i don't go out anymore.

  You could be my father-if you had children. Same thing happened to my parents marriage. When my dad was DF'd it was effectivly over.

  I agree with AMarie. Talk with her first. Lay it on the line. You owe her that honesty. As AMarie noted, if you agree you are not in love, call it quits. I, too, hope your future turns brighter, whatever direction it takes.

  Let us know.

  PS-Why the need to talk with the elders? If do you get divorced, the first time you admit you slept with someone (will your wife ask you to keep her updated?) or you get remarried, your wife becomes "scripturally" free to marry. The key is whether or not you feel you owe her this. My opinion is do not talk with them. That is a witch hunt waiting to happen.

  I was a little wild...

  I had no dub friends. I had one worldly friend. She introduced me to beer at age 16. I got busted in a bar with her and a group of high school kids. We then just drove around and drank...

  I did not do drugs 'til I was 19. My mother insisted I must be getting high, so I figured, what the hell, I might as well try! It took awhile for my friend to believe I was willing to break my vow to not try illegal drugs. It was fun! LSD was wild. Very strange...

  I did not sleep around 'til college. I lost my virginity at age 19 also. I met a guy at college and I fell for his lines hook, line and sinker.

  After college, I became very conservative. No time to do things like that. I had a responsible job and I wanted to make money!

  I still cannot figure out why I was not DF'd and allowed to drift away.
