JWs Were Right About Something
by minimus inthey used to say the world governments would turn on religion.
i think this part is coming true.
however they also said since jehovah’s witnesses were going to be the only religion left the governments were going to focus on the “eyeball”of jehovah, his people.

Ok, what type of “bridge” do you have in mind?
I'm not saying there is any easy solution to the cultural divides that have grown, it might have sounded that way by using a simple metaphor.
In my experience, when tempers are up bridges can be as mundane as discussing hobbies like coin collecting or raising chickens. Share passions like music and pets. Bridges form when we talk about childhood experiences on the farm or fishing/hunting etc. Even if the other person has not had the same experience, they are learning about you and filling out the image they had of you and you of them. The first step has to be a willingness to have a nonconfrontational exchange and try to see the person not a label. Once you know the other person as a human, it becomes harder to assume the worst about them or assume malicious intent.
1. Most folks are decent, 2. All of us can be mistaken, 3. everyone has something interesting about them
Remembering those 3 things is how we build bridges.

Recent grandparent funeral. We had a pleasant dinner with nonJW family before the funeral and skipped the JW service. Other EXJW family went and were dealt with unkindly. They were told to their face they were not welcome, they were seated in the back row not with family, and told to leave as soon as the talk was done. I'm glad we skipped it. Who needs that kind of emotional abuse.

The current narrative within the religious elements of the far right is parallel to the JWs in claiming victimhood from oppressive governments. Both are spawned from paranoia and a need to justify hostility toward outsiders. Playing the victim is also a powerful emotional tool to cement sectarian/political bonds.
REALITY: There is greater religious freedom now than ever before. More laws protecting freedom of religion, more legal precedent more public tolerance. Religion in many quarters is losing its influence due to greater freedom of information and individualism. The anti-Christian narrative within the political right is just as baseless as the JW's. What has been pointed to as governmental antipathy to religion is often actually an appropriate rejection of intolerance and bigotry by religious people in the workplace or public employment.

I have read and re read acts chap.15 and for the life of me I can't find the part about the 1st century governing body!
by nowwhat? ini cannot find the verse where it talks about several self appointed men that went behind closed doors to render their decision regarding circumcision.
all i see is that it was the apostles, older men and the congregation that came to a decision.
perfect example of why we need the governing body today.

Acts was written (or extensively edited) precisely to create an origin story for an organized Orthodoxy. It brings together the dominant characters and has them all collaborating. A central authoritative decision is made to be distributed to all. This revisioning of Christian origins has colored early Christian research till fairly recently.
What has been said frequently on this forum is the 'decision' to 'abstain from blood' was arrived at not as a perennial Christian necessity but as a compromise to Jewish Christians and potential converts. This is made very clear in verse 21.

Mt 10:18 / JWdom
by Magnum inmt 10:18 (nwt):.
and you will be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a witness to them and the nations.. how has this worked out for jwdom?
i always got the impression that jws would be brought before governments and would give some kind of grand, impressive witness.

The section has had repeated redaction. As someone noted vs 18 is dependent on Mark 13 and doesn't actually make sense in the context of Matt 10's commission to preach to Jews only. Some later editor inserted it here rather than where it likely belong in chapter 28.

The bird that had options to leave, but chose to be mentally enslaved
by RULES & REGULATIONS inthe watchtower—study edition | august 1, 2001. make your advancement manifest.
8 first, since “oneness” is to be observed, a mature christian must be in unity and full harmony with fellow believers as far as faith and knowledge are concerned.
he does not advocate or insist on personal opinions or harbor private ideas when it comes to bible understanding.

The JWs and many other high control groups like them boast about harmony and unity. Unity of thought, however, is not natural and is possible only with unethical methods of coercion. While cooperation and collaboration are essential for a society to function, the strength of any collaboration lies in the individual's contribution.
