If you eat at least once a day, have access to clean water, wear clean clothes, have a roof over your head when you go to sleep you, have a dollar in your pocket, and a dollar in the bank you are rich. Most people on this planet don't have these things. People who make a big deal about wealth never ask how happy people are.

The Poor the Wealthy and the Middle Class
by Simon inthe poor spendthe middle-class savethe wealthy invest.
the unique circumstances of the lockdown and stimulus checks has highlighted these differences in stark ways.. on one hand, you have jumps in sales and valuation of companies like foot locker and nike, as people spend their "free" government money on sneakers.
they blow it on useless tat.

The Animal Sentience Bill - what next?
by LoveUniHateExams inso, in the uk there was recently a bill which was nodded through parliament - the animal sentience bill - which was backed by vegan activists.. dogs, cats.
cows, even lobsters now have been recognised to have feelings.. first of all, let me say that if you want to go vegan that's fine with me.
we're all allowed our individual dietary choices.. but for how much longer?

I am more of a vegetarian (I like eggs & cheese). I also like freedom. I have borrowed this saying - "If it is such a good idea, why does it have to be made mandatory?"

by mickbobcat inmy in-laws are two such people.
people who pioneered and did not work and try to save, instead they made just enough to get by and waited for the end to come.
now my mil is in palliative care and the state is paying for her keep, my fil lives in a dilapidated home and can not keep it up.

My father started his own business. He could have made a decent retirement for himself. Instead, he chose to go out in service more.
Now I am 5 years from being able to retire from my job and collect my pension. My parents barely get by and my father still has to work part time in his 80s. In his eyes, I am the dummy.

Question
by Gorb inwhat is the probability that a religious organisation is used for money laundering?
for example, large amounts of money are raised by the organization as a donation and then legally introduced into the financial system.
is there any chance that jw.org is used for this kind of purpose?
-
truth_b_known
Money Laundering is when you take proceeds from illegal enterprise (e.g. narcotics trafficking) and use a financial system to make it appear as if it were profits from legitimate business. The Watchtower does hold itself out to be a religious entity to receive the tax exemption. There could one day be some tax law violations, but not Money Laundering.

How can you have a deficit for a Circuit Assembly on Zoom??
by pistolpete inremember when after a circuit assembly the assembly overseer would come out right before the end of the assembly and make a special announcement;.
"brothers, we have a financial deficit of $5,000 dollars for our circuit assembly.
keep in mind that we have utilities and other expenses that need to be met.

When it is Watchtower Law that the Watchtower cannot be questioned, they can continue running the same scam. It isn't expenses they are truly short on, especially in this scenario. They are short on the sizeable donation that is to be sent to the Watchtower. That donation is considered an "expense" or running the Assembly.

Watchtower Disparages the Bible
by Vanderhoven7 ini'm looking for wts quotations that contrast with ii timothy 3:15-16 whereby they downplay scripture.. here is one from way back..
"...people cannot see the divine plan in studying the bible by itself...if he then lays them [scripture studies] aside and ignores them and goes to the bible alone, though he has understood his bible for ten years, our experience shows that within two years he goes into darkness.
on the other hand, if he had merely read the scripture studies with their references, and had not read a page of the bible, as such, he would be in the light at the end of the two years, because he would have the light of the scriptures," (watchtower, sept. 15, 1910, p. 298).

My own observation is that the JWs typically follow Russell's 1910 advice anyway. Very very few JWs read the Bible contiguously from front to back, or even any of the individual books from beginning to end. If they did, they would soon realize how wrong the JW theology is.
This is a true statement. Reading the Bible cover to cover is an eye-opener. I did after I left the Witnesses. I cannot stomach reading anything outside the Gospels. I read Psalms and Proverbs. Reading David's prayer to Jehovah for the death of his enemies had my stomach turning.

The state of Texas passed a law prohibiting the closure of religious buildings and services due to events such as COVID-19. The Watchtower cannot site being cooperative with secular authorities as the reason for cancelling in person meetings, assemblies, and conventions in Texas. So why keep the Kingdom Halls closed in Texas?
Perhaps it is because the IRS, whom give the Watchtower their tax exempt status in the U.S., is a federal agency?
