When did district conventions become regional conventions and why?
by slimboyfat ini think it was gary and heather bottings' book the orwellian world of jehovah's wifnesses that noted the function of the habit of the watchtower organisation of changing organisational terminology periodically.
congregations became companies and then back to congregations again.
circuit overseers became circuit servants and then back again.

Just an observation from my perspective (midwest US). Back in the day (pre 1980) the district was well defined. All congregations in a district were assigned to the same district assembly, the congregations within the district were consistent, the district overseer and circuit overseers were visible and present at the district assembly, etc. More recently, the 'district' convention was a hodgepodge of congregations from numerous congregations from different circuits. The district overseer wasn't there, nor was it even clear what district it was. So I think the concept of 'district' had ceased to exist anyway for at least 15 years. -

The injustice is that the local JWs raised the money to build this hall and paid it off with their own donations. But now they are forced to give it up and they don't have a say. -

GB Samuel Herd on "Angels and Women"
by freetosee ini find it interesting that samuel herd (as co) promoted the book angels and women in his talk "fear of giants".
he called it a fascinating book, once you pick it up you cant put it down without reading it from cover to cover!
he also mentions that russell wrote the foreword of the book and that it can be found in the gilead library.. .

I have a copy of Angels and Women, but not of Selma. It is definitely a bit of early science fiction, of the kind I found fun to read when I was growing up. It may have seemed a bit strange at the time it was written (about 1870 or so) but it is not the 'inspired by demons' book that some have made it out to be. H G Wells novels aren't much different.
i also have a copy of Atla by the same author, mrs JG Smith. She was Ann Eliza Brainerd, wife of JG Smith who was a very wealthy railroad baron and one time governor of Vermont.

American accents, Bette Midler, Clinton, Rick Fearon, Strathclyde, Morningside
by slimboyfat ini used to enjoy being able to distinguish different local accents, but for some reason i've got worse at it.
i was thinking about this today when i was listening to bette midler on the scottish radio.
i thought to myself i quite liked her accent and also that it reminded me of someone else.

New Field Service Format?
by jw07 init seems that hype is the only thing keeping jw.org alive and well these days (that and the money of suckers who continue to fall for it).. at meeting on monday, an elder announced "the faithful slave has seen it fit to change the format of our ministry in 2016, and more information will come".
i guess the desired reaction is to get jws preoccupied with what those changes could possibly be, and if it means that the end is nearer or some crap.. with that said, i've been suckered into wanting to know what these 'changes' will be.
does anyone know?

Maybe the elder said or meant to say 'changes to the ministry [school]' which is changing a lot in 2016 as we know already.
on another note, it is becoming common for halls to have 3 and 4 congregations meeting at different times, and a Monday meeting is not unusual.

Television and before that radio has done a lot to homogenize accents in the US. And education. I grew up around Chicago where the grammar is good. But now I have a southern accent too after living in the southern Midwest. -
