how in the world did they justify this torture?

imagine the children forced to sit in the summer heat at yankee stadium for 12 hours a day.

for 8 days.

It really strikes me how things were so different then. Not just the jw religion. Everything. A modern audience wouldn't go for 8 straight days of 12 hrs each. Amazing. But we did it. Miserable, but it made such memories.

I wasn't at that one, but we were having 12 hour sessions into the late 60's

in mississippi, there is a historical site called forks of the road.

before the civil war, it was one of the most active slave trading markets in the south.

it was a triangular piece of land formed by ... you guessed it ... a fork in the road.

Don't forget that the WT had segregated congregations in the US South up until the early sixties.

during the wt study yesterday i had a confused look on my face the whole meeting.

more of a, wtf, face.

one paragraph says, "therefore,the number of partakers does not accurately indicate the number of anointed ones left on earth.".

The '144000 is a literal number' doctrine is going to have to be changed someday. It's just a matter of time.

i do not know if this misquote has been discussed here already.. new catholic encyclopedia says this about jw:.

"judge" rutherford introduced important changes in the witnesses' creed and transformed the congregational structure of the sect as it was under "pastor" russell into a rigid theocracy.

the third leader, "brother" nathan h. knorr, gradually replaced the offensive convert-making tactics of the rutherford era by suave manners that have gained the witnesses their current reputation as one of the best-behaved groups in the world.

I had not seen the encyclopedia entry in the OP, but I am a little surprised by it. It is comparatively biased for an encyclopedia.

To those who attended, attendance up or down at your memorial?

interesting to see if there's a noticeable trend in memorial attendance.

also did they talk more then usual about ones not to partake?

In many areas they have been renting places to hold the memorial where 3-4 congregations share a hall, and getting them all in one place exceeds the building capacity
