  i had an assignment to write a bunch of holiday articles that would be shared by all the various papers owned by the guy who owns the paper i'm the editor of.

  after i'd had enough with the usual holiday stuff, i decided to get a little adventerous and expanded one in the series to include, not just the origins of christmas foods, but also some ideas i've been reading and watching about the origins of the chrisitain religion itself.. this is a link to the article, which ran a few weeks ago: .

  Good job, Seeker.

  I have that documentary DVD sitting in my living room right now. My brother loaned it to me on Christmas day. He has been on a campaign to make me an athiest for years. He just may be succeeding too. I certainly am questioning it for sure.

  As for Jesus............maybe he existed, maybe he didn't. So what? If he did exist, he was just a really good philosopher, and some men decided to make his teachings a religion, sort of like L. Ron Hubbard's people did with his thoughts.

  What do you think about tv commercials nowdays?

  frankly, tv commercials nowdays offend me and get me angry.

  i hate the geico commercials which are very intrusive and retarded.

  i also dislike the sexual exancements commercials/ what a bunch of trash are todays commercials, probably just like the item it advertizes.

  I just think there are too many. I was watching TV the other night and there were 6 minutes of commercials, before they went back to the show. Then 5 minutes of the show and then more commercials.

  When I was about 13 and needing feminine hygiene products, I remember thinking to myself, that those were items that would never be advertised on television. How wrong I was!!

  Mom always said that you remember the offensive commercials, good or bad. When you are in a store, and see that brand, you will probably reach for it. So they work on many levels.

  worldly friends as a young jw..

  regarding child custody "coaching" etc..... and in it is a discussion about kids having "normal" friendships with worldly kids... many of us grew up jw and i was wondering what your personal experience was regarding having worldly friends.. .

  As I've said many times, here, I grew up in the 50's and 60's when things were very different for JW kids.

  I had lots of worldly friends, sleepovers, school activities, even dating worldly boys.

  My best friend from 6th grade on, and I, still communicate. She lives in Texas now, but was in town to have Christmas with her children. We met at a casino and had a great day together. We are senior citizens now and she has gray hair (I'm still resisting going gray). So glad I was allowed to have Gerry as my friend way back then.

  the whole family was there, almost, that are not jw's anymore.

  This is my brother and me at my son's house last night (Christmas). The whole family was there, almost, that are not JW's anymore. 16 adults and 7 children. I think that was the final count. One of his daughters was sick with food poisoning, but her hubby came anyway.

  It's the first photo of us in front of a Christmas Tree since 1949. Sorry he blinked.

  When is a fade finished?

  so i was thinking - if i don't da myself and they don't df me, am i doomed forever to this limbo called "fade?

  What willyloman says is true. The elders do not read the disassociation letter, so don't try to convince them of anything. They skim read it to see what your intention is, and then you are disassociated, and announced as such.

  I feel it's best to let them do the work. We have not da'd and won't do it intentionally. Some day it may happen, but having a Christmas tree for the past 5 years hasn't done it yet. Well................last year we were in Hawaii, so that doesn't count.

  JWs in Field Service Today--Christmas.

  i guess the local kh is doing a special field service outing today, which my wife will be a part of...on christmas morning.

  i think this is intrusive and disrespectful.. did any of you do fs on christmas?.

  is this a common thing among jws?

  We usually went on Christmas Day. Actually it was one of the only days of the year when people were pretty nice to us. They didn't listen, but were nice.

  in lieu of flowers, donations made to the world wide work of jehovah's witnesses would be appreciated by the family.. anybody ever seen a witness family do this before?

  i saw it in an obit in a newspaper online and it made me sick!

  most people ask for donations to non-profit organizations that help fight disease like cancer, etc.

  My ex-brother-in-law had a notice in his obituary about his miltary service even though he was a JW because, as I understand it, there is some monetary advantage to doing so. It provides some funds for the burial expense to be a veteran.

  It would depend on how long he had been in the military. My father was in the Navy for almost 20 years (he left when they became JW's, just short of retirement benefits). The only burial benefits he was allowed, when he die last year, were a plot and gravestone. No funeral or cremation costs were covered.

  I believe he makes a huge effort to answer all his inquiries. I know he is frail and not in good health, so he may not be as actively replying as he once was.
