  Did you go to meetings while on vacation?

  ugh...i did.

  im so damn spiritual id leave well oiled spots on your suit if you rubbed up against me.

  yeah...i packed kingdom hall clothes and service bags to go on vacation.

  We did sometimes. Often our vacations were to visit family, who were also JW's, so we went to meetings with them. When we were camping together, we would go to Sunday meetings.

  Once in Hawaii, when I was a regular pioneer, I went out in service several times. But that was fun.................seeing how they did it, and having a new experience. I have to say it was some of the most enjoyable times pioneering I ever had. The other pioneers (lots of them) were so much fun, down to earth people, very casual, and the territory was very interesting. (we don't stay in Honolulu, but in a residential area on the North Shore of Oahu).

  Holidays

  i was recently pmed about celebrating holidays, and thought it might be worthwhile posting a thread about it, even though it has been covered many times before.

  the explanation i give below is a mini-refutation of the ills of enjoying such "decadence": please feel free to add comments, though if it must be an essay please keep it short enough to be readable without the need to go to the restroom for a bladder-bursting break!!!.

  "there is no new thing under the sun" eccl.1:9.. if paganism can be called a distinct religion (given that it has as many amorphous guises as christian denominations), then it already did everything and tried everything, not really leaving an awful lot for any subsequent religion to uniquely call its own.

  What is your motive when celebrating a given holiday? If it is simply to enjoy the occasion (with or without whatever trappings you choose to include) and give thanks to God[dess] for the enjoyment of it, where's the quandry? I especially think that kids benefit all the more for a little excitement and "ritual" in their lives. Holidays are just the kind of occasions to give them that. The only reason we really think twice about it, as exJWs, is because a bunch of killjoys put it all in a negative light for us and suggested we HAVE to look into the minutea of any celebration for paranoid fear that there might be something wrong in it. Blow that for a game of soldiers! If they can accept a wedding band, with all its pagan connotations (should you choose to acknowledge them) then why are they "straining out the gnat and gulping down the camel"? Personally I fight such psychological barriers to examine whether or not my response is a genuine one or imposed through years of conditioning. Many folks struggle with a similar (but when you treally think about it, totally stupid) thing about entering a building just because it bears a title "church". It's a very real issue, and can be debilitating, but that doesn't make it any less daft.

  When it comes to holidays, I honestly don't think God is that small-minded. From what I read, Jesus certainly wasn't...

  it isn't the schedule, but the actual exerpts from the wts publications, week by week.. does anyone have a copy of the one for 2007?.

  in the past the wts discouraged people from having these, printing them up and distributing them.

  Can you function w/o your cell phone?

  i went without my cell phone for a couple of days because i left it at my brothers house.

  he lives in another state and i had to wait for it to be overnighted to me.

  i could not believe how crazy i went without it.

  I don't get many calls on my cell, but am very panicked if I forget it at home on the charger. I would hate to be stuck with a broken down car, or out of gas, etc., and no phone to call for help.

  right............my friend would get several printed up and only charge what it cost to put them in booklets..............she never made a profit.

  Obviously someone complained.

  Does anyone know where I can get this information?

  The dubs that brought you into the WTS

  how do you perceive the jws that had brought you into the wts, do you like them, resent them, are they still dubs or did they get out before you?

  it would be nice if there are instances where those that brought people in later helped them leave.

  i don't particularly like the dubs that got me in because i later realised they were doing everything to impress their superiors and get promoted, something they achieved as they got good bethel positions abroad.

  The people who studied with my parents were lovely people................about 20 years later, the wife was disfellowshipped, divorce and got married to a Naval officer, and years later got reinstated but never did much again.

  When my parents divorced about 10 years after that, the husband married my mother. He was my stepfather for 32 years until he died. He was the best. He was a Gilead graduate (2nd class), Branch overseer in The Netherlands and CO in the U.S., and he spoke to us in the years before his death about how things hadn't gone the way he had thought they would. He didn't understand that either and was always very kind to us after we left. He never acted like we had done anything wrong.

  celebrating christmas

  i left the dubs about 10 yrs ago.... but didn't celebrate xmas until about 7yrs ago.

  even then i didn't get a tree... just kept it simple.. do it all now!

  love it.. even if it's not christs birthday..... who cares?????

  As far as a tree goes. I just don't understand them. What does a tree have to do with Christ or birthdays? I find the whole tree thing strange and so I don't think I will ever have one. Too much trouble.

  We connect no religion to Christmas at all, at our house. It's all about Santa Claus, reindeer, and snowmen. No nativity, no angels, no religious anything. I skip the religious Christmas songs on my CD's and am looking for a CD that has generic Christmas songs. But.......my favorite Christmas song is "O Holy Night".

  I know that must sound weird to those who still have a deep religious connection, but we just don't. Been there, done that............ALL DONE!!!

  The tree is just so pretty and fun to decorate and look at. We look forward to doing our tree every year.

  In the past the WTS discouraged people from having these, printing them up and distributing them. I understand that they have let up on that.

  One of my JW friends asked me to ask all of you if anyone has one. (she knows to ask me for advance info ) She lost contact with the people who supplied them for her in years past.

  I want her to have this because she always gets one made for my elderly mother, in large print.

  celebrating christmas

  i left the dubs about 10 yrs ago.... but didn't celebrate xmas until about 7yrs ago.

  even then i didn't get a tree... just kept it simple.. do it all now!

  love it.. even if it's not christs birthday..... who cares?????

  It was a gradual thing for us. We would go to our daughter's house for Christmas and buy all the grandchildren presents, at first. We didn't do any decorating at home. Then I bought a fireplace mantle garland and decorated it with lights and ornaments.

  The next year I bought a tiny tree and decorated it with earring sized ornaments and bought presents for more people.

  3 years ago we had our first real tree. Now I buy lots of presents.

  Lights on the house this year.

  It's kind of a bittersweet holiday for us. My parents became JW's when I was only 4 years old, so I remember Christmas once I think. We raised all 4 of our children without it, so seeing how wonderful it really is now, it makes us sad that we didn't have all the traditions for them to look back on.

  About 6 years ago I started baking gingerbread people and decorating them with two of the grandkids. They look forward to that every year. Another grandchild is here during the Christmas season (I babysit him from time to time) and he always wants to make Christmas cookies and decorate them. So I'm starting new traditions.
