hey, im not sure if anyone knows of this, but recenetly (well actually like about 3-4 months ago) jw's in my area have been told to create emergency preparation kits for themselves or thier familys, and to give the elders phone numbers of non-witness relatives for emergency contacts.. also one thing that they've just started doing is the elders are going around giving "sheparding calls" to everyone in the congragation and asking them questions such as *( they said this from the platform) "what do you find the hardest about being in the truth" or something along those lines.. i think that just might be a local thing, but it is strange and over the many years they have never really done any thing like that.. and the emergency thing i thik is strange too.. maybee they think a disater will happen here.... just thought i would mention this 'cause i find it a little strange.. well not that strange, their always on to something new and crazy...
they did the same thing in the early 70's, pre 1975.
Knorr gave a talk in San Francisco where he advised everyone that it might be a good idea to stock up about a year's supply of emergency supplies, especially water. We couldn't afford to do that, so didn't. I know a lot of people that did though.

There are benefits to filing taxes. Occasionally you get a refund. While our kids were young, before they no longer qualified as a deduction, we got a nice refund every year.
If you work for an employer, you already pay taxes. Maybe you just don't like to file. And you may be due a refund. The IRS would love to keep your money.

Barbara is a friend of mine, and won't tell me what it's all about. She is very cautious about it not getting out before they are ready, but she is very much consumed with writing all the time now.

think about it, there is always admonitions against slits in skirts (which a lot of skirts have), too short dresses and skirts, etc.
not to mention not having to worry about someone peeping up your dress as you walk up the bleachers at the dc.
In the Winter, I always wore pants in field service. What difference did it make, when I had on boots and a long coat? No one could tell I didn't have on a dress under that long coat. It would have been insane to wear a dress in some of the weather we had.
When this subject came up for discussion back in the late 70's, I remember hearing that " if we let the sisters wear pants, pretty soon they will show up in blue jeans".

I know several people who tried to get away with not paying. One man lost his house, and almost was bankrupt, after they were through with him. He owed about $100,000. After 5 years, they caught up with him.
It may take awhile but they do find you.
The only way you can get out of it, I hear, is if you never had a social security number, and somehow are able to exist without one. The way the laws have changed in the past few years, that would be pretty difficult. Even if you were able to pull that off, you have to not be caught. It would just make it more difficult for them to get you.
I went to a seminar a few years ago, where people were taught how to become "penniless" by putting all their assets in offshore banks, and live on nothing. About a year after that seminar, they were all caught and prosecuted. One man that was a pretty close friend of mine, was Canadian. He moved to the US, and pretty much disappeared, even changing his name for everything but legal papers. Mail, email and any correspondence was all with the pseudonym. He has been successful in avoiding paying taxes. All of his money is in Nassau.

problem is that days like today, when i talked to witnesses in a plaza, i did not have anything to give but my words.
funny, i gave my business card to them(they were spanish), and told them to have someone call on me, so i can do a study with them.

Those are exactly the reasons I don't try to convince my elderly mother. For one thing, if she saw it as I do, I don't think she would want to live anymore. There is not a good enough reason for me to take the risk. I leave her alone and let her be happy with her religion.
i learned an interesting fact from my father's doctor when he was being treated for a stroke.
mom had mentioned that even though dad couldn't speak well enough to ask for a glass of water he could clearly say, "goddammit".
the dr. explained that epithets are from a different part of the brain and this area had not been affected by the stroke.. i found this very interesting.
I can't say that it has. I still cannot say that word, even if I am quoting someone who has said it. I said it once in a conversation, quoting someone in a movie, and the looks on my family's faces were enough for me. Everyone just howled. It just isn't right coming out of me.
My grandparents were a great influence on me and were very, very proper in their decorum. I never heard either of them even utter a euphemism. No one in our house used bad language either, so I think I am wired to NOT use it.
My father in law always said that "cursing is a weak mind, grasping to express itself". He never swore either.
Having said all that, I don't give a rip if others do it, just not in front of little ones.

my wonderful son who as you know i always brag about.
I don't know the years, but Neil Diamond puts on a great show. He has no warm up acts, and sings for hours. We went many times to his concerts and sat almost in the front row, and once in the front row.
There was a couple in our congregation that had a music store, and they sold concert tickets (long before Ticketmaster existed). She would always call me when Neil was coming and put aside tickets for us.
About 10 years ago, we saw Reba McIntyre, and she was great. Those tickets were an anniversary gift from friends who didn't know we weren't fans, but it was still a good show. She had a couple of warm up acts that were very good too. She had broken her leg shortly before the concert and performed in a motorized wheelchair. Very funny and she handled it great.
Last year we went to see The Brothers Cazimero, singers from Hawaii, and loved their show.
A friend of ours plays Hawaiian slack key guitar, and is friendly with many of the celebrated slack key artists, and when they come to Seattle, we go see them with him, and have met many of the greats. Raymond Kane, Ledward Kaapan, Owana Salazar, Keola Beamer, and more whose names aren't coming to me.
