  Do you know what your last name means and where it comes from...?

  i have always been interested in what last names mean and where they come from and if someone famous in the past is related to us because of the same last name.

  my last name comes from greek but my family is not greek.

  it dates back to the year 700ce and it was around the time in europe when people were starting to get last names - i'm talking about the general people not monarchs.

  My maiden name was Maxfield...............originally Macclesfield, or a farm owned by Maccles. Or so they say. Very British. The name is common around Manchester.

  My married name is King, Scottish from MacGregor. When the clans had to get rid of their names and tartans, King was one of the names this clan used. The story is that they chose it to show their allegiance to the English King. They were not Highlanders, who wanted the Stuart king (Bonnie Prince Charlie.....Charles Edward Stuart) brought back from France to rule them. The Lowlanders, including the MacGregors preferred the reigning English king.

  My mother's mother's maiden name was Strong. They were very early settlers of the US, back to the 1600's. When I researched it further, I learned the name was originally French, and was actually spelled Strange..............then Stronge and finally Strong. My husband said it all made sense to him now.   i just unplug from information, while on vacation.

  although, while there we did hear that anna nichol smith died.

  Well............she wanted the spotlight, and she got it and even after her death, she goes on and on.

  I wonder why the people in her life who controlled her, didn't stop the drugs. It's all very sad.

  I heard today that she had her husband's sperm frozen and may have gotten pregnant with that. Grrrrossss! That would be an interesting turn of events though, and surely make the fortune a done deal for the baby.

  I hope her mother gets the baby. Or her sister............not that Stern guy. He's a user and a maggot. Geraldo Rivera called him a pimp, and that seems right too.

  Would the WT club have mandated the prodigal son be shunned?

  the prodigal son's father met him out on the road as he approached, put a fine robe around his shoulders and had rings made for him.

  they had a big party as he announced "my son has come home!!

  " everone knew he had blown his inheritance on liquor and prostitutes.. wouldn't the wt "arrangement" have mandated a comittee meeting to have been held to determine if they felt he was truly repentant and most probably he would have to had a period of time that he was shunned so they could tell the congregation "that situation had been dealt with".

  This was one of the things that blew it for me. Our second son was disfellowshipped and begging to be able to see the family, especially his brothers and sister. He was 20.

  When we studied this in the book study, in The Greatest Man book, I blew up. I commented too, and no one argued with me. Of course my husband was the conductor, and it was in our house.

  My arguments:

  1. it was the brother, not portrayed well in the bible, who was angry and wouldn't have anything to do with him.

  2. the WTS says it was obvious he had changed..............why was it obvious? It says the father saw him from a long way off

  Lots more, but those are the main ones.

  A JW actually spoke to me yesterday

  i stopped at the store yesterday, on the way home from having taken my jw mother to lunch.

  inside the store was a jw i've known my entire life, but he doesn't live in our area.

  the store was trader joe's, and they are not in every community, so he had driven quite a ways to get there.

  I'm not disfellowshipped.

  Mom is 94, and very well known and respected in the greater Seattle area. I doubt they would do anything to her at this stage of her life, even if we were df'd. At her age, they know we take good care of her, and they sure don't want that responsibility.

  My brother is df'd, and has been for 30 years, and no one has ever chastized her for her long association with him. .............other than me, that is............before we left the WTS.

  we went to see this movie this afternoon.

  it was soooo good, and jennifer hudson is amazing.

  i remember her from american idol, and thought she was way too good for that show, but she got voted off and ruben studdard won that year.............or was it fantasia?.

  I didn't get the supporting actress thing. She was totally the main focus of the movie. She was the best singer-I can't even remember the others being showcased at all! She was IT. Awesome movie, interesting story, and beautiful girl. She has a wonderful face! And the voice! OMG, it impressed my son and he is hard to impress.

  That was how the two of us reacted too. My hubby came along because I asked him too, but I know he thought it was a "chick flick". Now he's very glad he tagged along.

  Interesting side point, for anyone interested: At Jimmy's wake (in the movie), the woman who sang is Loretta Devine. For years on Broadway, she was Effie. I think she originated the role and later Jennifer Holliday did it.

  I wonder though, why they have her in the category of Best Supporting Actress for the Oscars. She is a lead actress in this movie, if there ever was one. The whole thing is about her. When she sang "I'm Not Going", I thought the whole audience would stand and cheer, but they did clap. Only about 20 at the Noon show.

  The only thing we could think of is that if she was in the Best Actress Category, she would be up against Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep. Less chance of winning.

  When my children were young, I auxiliary (vacation) pioneered frequently. When our youngest was about 11, I became a regular pioneer for more than two years until I burned out. Then I regained my health and attitude, sort of, and tried to get back to pioneering, but never could quite make the committment again. In that same time frame, my husband was learning the truth about the organization, which was taking a lot of my joy away.

  My husband became an elder in 1974, and quickly advanced in the local area because he is very smart, was a serious Bible student, and was an excellent speaker, in high demand. He became the school overseer and served there for 14 years, until he was made the Watchtower overseer, which he continued to conduct, until he resigned as an elder in 1997 to begin our fade. He served on special committees for many years, was a District Convention speaker, had a part on every Circuit assembly, and taught the MInisterial Training School, subbing for the CO, who had back surgery. He went to Bethel to work on construction, and was asked back at their expense several times.

  It all seems such a waste now.

  i was sick with the flu in bed when two witnesses decided to stop by in service.

  i wasn't going to answer the door, but they just kept pounding, so i thought it might be someone who needed something.

  i drag myself out of bed and put on a robe and peek out.

  I can understand that, but after they leave I thought about their lack of concern. I would hope, if I was in that situation, I would have at least asked if I could bring them something from the store or if they were in need of some help.

  When I was "out in service" and someone who was ill answered the door, I always offered to go to the store for them. Once a woman said she would appreciate that so much. We got her some 7 up and some crackers and she paid us way more than it cost and wouldn't take the change. We thought it was the right thing to do, and of course an excellent witness.
