Women: Are they Equal to Men ?
by villagegirl inone of the hard core doctrines of the wt society, and many other religions, is that women are to be in "subjection" to men.. in the bible, in genisis , it says the domination of women by men came after adam and eve disobeyed god.
eve was cursed by pain in childbirth and that from then on as a curse: "he shall rule over you " from then on the male was to dominate the female.. but that was not in the original plan.
this was a reversal of the plan and a curse.

Stay Alive Til 2020
by FrankWTower ini've been playing around with wt statistics recently, helped by the great data available on jwfacts.com.
i wanted to share somehting with the community, maybe you've seen something like this before.. continuing the trend of decline seen during the last 30 years, i was able to extrapolate the year when wt growth might finally end.
if trends continue, we may only have to wait about 8 more years, 9 years to see it reported if the wt decides to report it at all, to see publisher growth end and possibly reverse.. the graph shows the annual growth rate of average publishers during the last 31 years.

The trendline shows that by 2014 we will be at the lowest level of growth since the begining of the chart.
That has to be significant. Centennial of "Christ 2nd Coming" combined with natural decay is a double hit.
If nothing else the chart refutes the myth of god speeding the growth. Deceleration = trendline going down. Acceleration = trendline going up.

this should be a good example for the gb of our church organization.
there are reasons enough: child abuse (conti case etc), failed prophecies (slave classe, un/osce), killing doctrines (blood doctrine etc, shunning / suicide) and fraude (investment corporation instead of church).. so it would be nice to read on bbc news: governing body of jehovah's witnesses resigns and make way for a new generation that embraces christian freedom.. gorby.

I know a lot of elders wives who get plastic surgery and have breast implants.
Apparently they feel small breasts are an imperfection due to sin and they don't want to wait. They also are impatient to grow young again.
It appears scripturally permissable to remove hair. Now if they braid it that would be wrong.

Books that make you go hmm....
by jgnat init's occurred to me that i have been reshaped by the books i have read, taking my new knowledge for granted, and forgetting that those around me have not been on the same journey.
as a consequence sparks fly, as iron sharpening iron, as we strive to understand each other (or to insist that we are not the same).
there are a few books that stand out, as i refer to them over and over again.

I really can't reccommend any of the couple thousand books I've read in my life time.
As I read more and more books I began to notice that each book added less and less to the big picture.
To me there are great ideas but no great books. Great ideas are pervasive and can be found in various degrees in many books.
To appreciate a "great idea" you have to be ready for it.
The books I liked were the ones that put into words the ideas I was on the verge of expressing.
Big ideas?
Free will is impossible or at best unimportant.
Death got us to where we are.
Our brains are overated.
Nobody deserves credit or blame.
Language is a poor representation of the world.
Geography is important. National boundaries aren't.
You can't be or have a self without selfishness.
Science without vision is just a passtime.
Vision without science is blind.
Marriage is not made in heaven.
Eggs are expensive - sperm is cheap.
No one is at the controls any where. Not inside the person. Not over the universe.
All you need to know about a person is What they want and How they get what they want. What they avoid and how they avoid it.
Most important questions for communication. What do you mean? How do you know that?
I'm not trying to hijack the thread. But don't just mention books. What BIG IDEA did you get from the book.
To be fair many of you have also explained how books helped you.

i know jehovah's witnesses do not teach the rapture (except maybe for the 144,000) so all of them expect to live through the tribulation (whatever that was to them).

It doesn't matter what JW's teach. The "rapture" is a the perfect word to describe what is referred to at 1Cor 15:50-57 and 1Thess. 4:14-18
JW's don't like the word rapture. But in 1994 they pretty much fell in line with that concept.
There was a big article about what happens "immediately after the tribulation". They dropped one shoe and admitted that the gathering of the chosen ones is not the door-to-door work.
Early in the conclusion of the system of things, these anointed disciples of Jesus were brought into theocratic unity. However, according to the sequence employed, Mark 13:27 and Matthew 24:31 describe something else. “With a great trumpet sound,” the remaining “chosen ones” will be gathered from the ends of the earth. How will they be gathered? Unquestionably, they will be “sealed” and clearly identified by Jehovah as part of “those called and chosen and faithful.” And at God’s designated time, they will be gathered up to heaven to be king-priests. This will bring joy to them and to their faithful companions, the “great crowd,” who will themselves be marked for ‘coming out of the great tribulation’ to enjoy blessings on a paradise earth.—Matthew 24:22; Revelation 7:3, 4, 9-17; Watchtower 94 Feb 15 Page 21 Paragraph 23
What's strange is this article involving new light about the gathering of the chosen ones to heaven makes no reference to the key scriptures that most Christians associate with the rapture. Yet those scriptures are clearly parallel to the ones in Matthew about the trumpet and the rapture.
The most incriminating thing about this is that it is one of those doctrines that devastate their teaching that the resurrection of the annointed who have died has already occurred. "But shun empty speeches that violate what is holy for they will advance to more and more ungodliness, and their word will spread like gangrene. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of that number. These very men have deviated from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already occurred and they are subverting the faith of some." 2Tim 2:16-18
All of these lies are taught to cover up the fact that nothing happened in 1914.
