  Why do people hate Americans?

  maybe the correct word is not "hate", but "distain" or "dislike"... .

  many people were against the war in iraq and dilike president bush, has this had a baring on how people view americans?

  when america flexes its military muscles how do you feel?

  Ok Simon you did answer the question, so in regards to the parades, I guess ya just have to be there to get it.

  If you ever come back to the States,,,,,you should go to one of our parades,,,,,,,,they are not all Patriotic. I guess here in America we just like to celebrate life , and one way is by parades Believe me especially here in Louisiana we have a parade or festival for just about everything an anything. We even have a MudBug Festival every year , mudbugs are cajun boiled crawfish. Big , big part of our culture here.

  We also have State Fairs, carnivals, circus, rodeos, School Homecoming parades, Veterans parades, Gay Pride parades, Mardi Gras parades, so yeah with everything in our culture we play it up big.

  It also makes for a sense of community . Just about every time there is a festival or parade , it is to benefit a cause. You name it there is going to be a case that is highlighted and money raised for.

  Yeah, somethings are kind of silly and corney maybe,,,,,but our children love the parades because it is something they can participate in and share with the adults. So that is why we don't fee the parades are lame at all, if you look deep into the real reasons for the them and the good they do.

  Would you bend over to pick up a penny on the ground? Or maybe a nickel?

  yesterday evening i was taking a long walk, and then i saw a nickel (5 cents) on the sidewalk, so i didn't even bother to pick it up.

  then walking away i was surprised that i didnt even pick it up.

  i know that i would never pick up a penny, but a nickel, usually i do pick that up.

  I never pick up a penny because I am afraid it will bring bad luck to me, lol. Really my son told me if you find it tails up, or heads it means one thing or the other, good luck or bad. Since I don't know which is which , I just leave it alone. Why tempt fate ya know. LOL

  What is it with Americans and parades?! They always seem so lame. We just don't get it.

  Why do you say this you don't "get" our parades? Do all Britians really think we are "lame" for our parades or is it just you? I really do want to know why you say the parades are lame?

  This is not asked in sarcassism , just wanting to know what 'ya mean.

  My sister is down and out...

  almost 15 years ago my sister gave birth to a son, and, feeling that it was the right thing to do, married the boy's father even though she had little in common with him.

  the marriage lasted for about 3 or 4 years, was full of drama, and came to an inglorious and bitter end.

  they worked out a joint custody arrangement where my sister had the more parental responsibilities of seeing to his education, but his dad still got to see him a good bit of the time.

  Dave,,,,,,,,,I know what you mean about the Pentacost religion, I thought JW's were the only freaks out there.

  The Pentacost in my area, are very strict........ cant cut their hair,no makeup, if you wear earrings they can only be a certain size, no pants for the ladies. I know most of the thing the women can't do because my Son's b/f was a pentacost.

  She had to move from her church to another one because she was not fitting in with a certain bunch and was basically ran off.

  She and her son went thru some things with this and she left her husband . She moved out of town, cut her hair and put on some pants, and became her own person. And she really did love Jesus. She was always , always talking about the Lord . But she never held it against me for being a JW and she never preached to me , nor I to her.

  She is still not going to church, she even has some beer now and then. She and her son are much happier now.

  Honestly, I NEVER thought they would walk away from it.........they were also heavy duty in that religion. I guess like me and JW, the right thing and the right time,,,,,,,,,,I walked to.

  Maybe in time you nephew will have something that will hit him and he will decide for himself to walk away. Let's hope so.

  Our New Orleans is gone.

  after talking to many of the evacuees from new orleans and watching all of the local coverage , interviews of surviors ,they are just thankful to be alive.

  they are also in deep despair over family members who they can not find, they don't know if they are alive or dead.

  not to mention the ones they know are gone.. there are so many are just heartbroken that the home they knew is gone forever .

  Our family went down to New Orleans quite frequently, sometimes on business, other times just because my Mom loved it so. Some of the best memories I have of her , where those of when we were on vacations. Leaving the busy hectic part of my Dad's business, the everyday grind of being a JW, she always was a different person away from home. Down in New Orleans she just came alive.

  Billygoat, your description and others, is exactly what stands out in my mind too. Funny thing, the BEST memory I have was being in New Orleans for a convention. Well, I was a kids, I think it might have been 1982, not real sure, things run together for me way back then. Seems they had just released the My Book of Bible Stories.

  We stayed in a hotel that had a glass elevator on the outside ,(actually it was enclosed but seemed on the outside) and I was terrified as a kid. It might have been this hotel that was in a circle, and you could look straight down the center of like a doughnut and I was afraid of heights.

  After the sessions , my parents took us swimming and it seemed like a little beach area we went to.

  I sure do hope they can perserve some of the historical areas so that it can give the people who want to rebuild something to hold on to, to go from.
  
  So many I hear are not going back, I am sure it is too soon for them to know for sure what to do.

  There are so many are just heartbroken that the home they knew is gone forever . Sure they can rebuild and make it better than it was in many ways.

  But the old New Orleans the wonderful , beautiful parts,the jazz music, the Bourbon street vendors, these realities has been lost under the flood waters.

  The NewOrleans culture is like no other,,,,,,,,that place , that town was known all over the world , especially for Mardi Gras.

  I don't see how there can be a Mardi Gras there this year.

  I think that is why for all American's, the City of New Orleans stood out because of it's rich culture. It was a " must see" for avid tourist.

  Louisiana is in mourning right now for the lives lost, the destruction of beloved family homes, and for the time being ,,,,,not knowing if "home" will ever be home again.

  Wifey's surgery went well - she is back home and sleeping it off....

  she was only in the hospital part of the day.

  it is amazing how quickly they kick you out of the hospital nowadays.. she is fine, a little groggy yet, but should be back to normal within the week.. jeff

  I hope she gets well soon. My son had to have a tooth pulled as it broke down at the nerve. Well a simple thing turned into a surgery proceedure and he has been down for three days. Even the short hospital stays or day surgery can be hell. And I know that my son sure wanted to be babied.

  My son is not going to School Airline High, Tuesday because they are using all of the school buses up this way to pick up the folks in NO.

  They cancelled the football game so they can get the buses out tonite.

  They should have done something like this before it hit.

  We already have so many evacuees, I am going to watch the local news to see where they are going to put all the evacuees heading up this way. Even the CNN said they are sending them to Shreveport.
