Interesting Jesus cults

larsinger and his posts got me to thinking about others that believe/believed that they are/were jesus.

i started looking up a ton of info and stumbled across some pretty interesting cults.

i just wanted to create a thread to talk about or post videos, links, or articles about modern day cults that you have found interesting.

CA, I don't think that mp said anything close to this. You are putting a statement out there and attributing it to mp in a backhanded way. I'm surprised at you. Do you now want to go on a sexist rant about how women are stupid and only good for one thing, or don't you have the guts to make that statement? See how that works? Are you still beating your wife?

As far as racism in the bible and how wonderfully the foreigner was treated, maybe we should ask a Canaanite. Or an Amalekite----as even future generations were to be condemened until none were left. It all depends on point-of-view in this case.

Did you ever have to walk out of/shut off a movie when watching with JWs?

i can only recall one occasion.

it was when my brother and future wife were dating.

they had dinner at my parents' house, along with her uber-zealous/borderline psychotic parents.

I wanted to watch the movie Practical Magic. I don't know why, but I just wanted to. I started the movie, and liked it, but kept feeling guilty. So I turned it off. As time went on, I started that watching the movie many times, but always felt guilty and turned it off. LOL. It took years before I finally got to see how it ended.

Toward the end of my term as a dubbie, I was 'secretly' watching, Buffy, Angel, Weeds, Dexter, Big Love, Californication, Nurse Jackie, The Tudors, and any R rated movie I wanted to see. But I have elders as neighbors, so I used to pulled my curtains tight as though porn was playing. LOL

I invited a family to my house to see a G rated movie. They were all adults. The children were ranged from their 20's to 40's and none had ever left home. The parents came too. Originally I had only invited 2 of them, but then they asked if the whole family could come. The parents watched over them like they were 11-year-olds. It was weird.

Anyway, after that movie had ended (Princess Diaries) they didn't seem to want to leave. So I took the daughter aside and asked if they would want to watch Shrek which was PG. She said, "It depends on what makes it PG!" Well, I told her if she had to ask that, then I wouldn't play it. They were like Amish JW's.

what rules do you follow when pronouncing foreign names/places/things?

i was remembering that when we were studying the daniel book for the book study back in the day, someone released a pronunciation guide.

i remember studying it closely so i could pronounce all the names right (especially on the section of daniel 11).

I remember that guide. I studied it too. But really, when everyone around me used more typical pronunciation, it felt snotty to pronounce it differently, even if my sheet said so. What I remember from it was Darius.

The sheet said: Dar I us.

Everyone else said Dar eus

(or that's how I remember it)

Then there was Phil I stine but everyone said Phil istine. I've heard it both ways (this wasn't on the Daniel sheet)

In the end, translating from an ancient language to English probably means that anything goes. Even today, when watching international news, different programs pick up different spellings and pronunciations.

I mispronounce words here and there for a couple of reasons. First, I read a lot, and my visual vocabulary is much bigger than the vocabulary I speak with. One of those unfamiliar words can come tripping out suddenly, with little thought. Another reason is I tend to think very quickly at times, and sometimes a word I know well will just come out wrong. I know it immediately, but there is ALWAYS someone who helpfully wants to correct me. Irritates the crap out of me.

NC, so would you consider the American flag an idol?

Sure. I do think it is a type of idol. It's not for me. I wouldn't spend pages on a forum defending it. For me it's a symbol, nothing more. Have one, don't have one, I'll still be an American. I don't have one. I still feel American and when I think about the Constitution, or even consider what I will be voting for, I have no problem focusing on American things.

I also have no problem pledging to it, if that is the norm. I don't say 'under god', cuz it irritates me, but I say the rest.

Some people idolize it. Burn one, and watch what happens. I think that's just silly to worry about it, but some people have it as an idol.

That said, I don't have an issue with idols. I'm an atheist. I don't have to worry about offending any gods.

first change the flag salute and its reference to God. Change the money and it's reference to God.

Working on it. Both references are relatively new. As far as displaying Jefferson's bible, that is history, and I don't think many would see a problem with it. There will always be some intermingling, as we have a Christian culture, but quite a bit of it can be cleaned up. CREATOR was common terminology, and actually didn't reference Christianity, so-------------

One step at a time. Each will work on their particular issue. One person may be concerned about town halls, and another group be concerned about 'under god'. You can't really tell people which battle you think is more appropriate and which they will choose to fight, because you want to prioritize them for others.

We are a country that has often allowed the majority to oppress the minority---be we've gotten better and will continue to fight our battles.

It's the lack of tolerance that causes atheists to want to remove nativity scenes from public places

Ahem, allow me to speak, as an atheist, because I don't think you have this figured out.

This is not about tolerance, for the atheists I know. This is about a principle. I don't mind if I see a nativity on private property. Some can be quite pretty. I don't get angry when I see them. I tolerate them quite well, thank you very much.

Yet there is a principle of separation of Church and State that is violated all the time. It is a constant struggle. Those of us that recognize that our government was meant to be secular, and those that tell an alternative history claiming that America is a Christian nation. (I'm obviously speaking as an Atheist AND an American--other countries may have different struggles). Why should the Pagan or the Atheist have to tolerate their town hall favoring one religion over the other? Is that not indicative of an overall attitude? My Wiccan friend lives in a city with a mayor that wants to adopt the slogan, Most Christian City In The Nation. Now why should she tolerate that? Does that make her angry when carolers knock on her door? Of course not.

It's not the place of government to be putting up religious symbols. It is not intolerance to demand they follow the Constitution. It has been reduced to that---oh-look at the petty atheists---getting all upset about a cross. It's not the cross that is upsetting. It is the principle that says a tolerant government is also a secular government. One should not influence the other.

So reduce it to the ridiculous if you like. But the issue is bigger and more complex. It is not the nativity scene that is offensive but the context. I am not offended by cuss words, however if I saw a pre-school teacher using them when addressing the children, I would take issue. Would that make me intolerant? I don't think so. Could it be reduced to me just being a priss that doesn't like bad language? Certainly. If that's the spin a person wants to give it.

Why the cross? Defiling a mountain? Just wanting to look at nature and seeing a billboard? The things that have been done and are being done behind the shadow of that symbol? How do you think a homosexual feels when looking at a cross on a mountaintop when he or she had dealt with his or her rights being refused by those that love that cross? How do you think a Muslim feels when wanting to look at nature and having to look at that cross? A pagan? A woman who has had her choices taken away?

The cross is a very offensive symbol to some, and there is no reason to be mucking up nature, which should belong to all, with a commercial.
