someone told me this was a great non prejudice book by this man raymond...who apparently worked with them and wrote alot of their.
books, but was kicked out for not believing in the way they did.

If you are only going to read one book on the experience of leaving, this is the one to read. He was a member of the Governing Body, so he knew it at the very top. His uncle Fred Franz was the president of the WTBTS. His research is carefully done and he writes without malice. I think others here will attest to what I am saying.

i was raised as a jw (third generation), got the unceremonious 'boot'(df)in 1980-81 been so long..i can't remember the actual date.

You mentioned that your family goes back to the Rutherford days in California. Did they happen to live in the San Diego area and/or know anything about Beth Sarim? My mother's aunt Berta spent winters there and lived there after Rutherford died until it was sold. Just curious.

We had a curious experience a couple weeks ago. Two men with book bags came to our door and no other doors in the 'hood. Of course, we didn't answer the door. We have been out over thirty years. Are they out to get us, or are we being paranoid? We moved here with no local records, but we noticed that when they worked our street before, they skipped our house, which led us to believe that someone had forwarded information about us and we had been labeled as apostates. Well, I don't really care what they do, but Zazzu wants to remain invisible to them if possible. Well, this is a good example of something that has stayed with us all these years. How to deal with their possible intrusion into our lives.
in a recent topic someone mentioned how much they have drifted from god since they "left the jw's.".
as someone brought up in the org (inactive for several years)i have found this to be similiar in my case.

I met JAVA when he first came out. For over two months we spent every Sunday afternoon at a retaurant drinking coffee and talking things over. He's a good friend to have.
i have noticed we have several "active" jws on this board, and some of their comments really bother me.. when i was active, when the wtbts said "don't associate with apostates or worldly people" i didn't.
when they said "spend more time in the ministry" i went to school, held down a job.

Xandit stated recently that 25% of the young JWs in his area were getting college degrees. I wonder if those who have been out less than two years could give an estimate of the percent in their area that are doing this? I would bet that the numbers are very low. I asked Xandit where he lived, but he didn't answer. The only possibility that I can think of is that he lives in a very rich congregation, which, I think, would be a rare one and certainly not representative.
Perhaps Xandit ability to be different is because he makes major financial contributions. They do tend to go easier on such people. They put up with Michael Jackson for a long time for this reason.
I certainly can't see that his situation is the norm as he asserts, but, rather, a major exception.

You mentioned that we are living in a grand time. My mother's four aunt's became JWs in the 1920's. They thought it was a grand time too. They are all dead. My mother became a JW in 1944 at the age of 22. She thought it was a grand time. She's dead. When I was 19, I told my JW buddies that I was going to college. They told me that Argmageddon would be here before I graduated. They are all grandparents now. Your religion has had a sense of ugency for over 120 years now. However, for someone your age, history is not given much credibility either inside your religion or outside of it.
As I pointed out and as Ianoa got, but you didn't, there is no point in getting all worked up. Suppose you knew for a fact that end was coming in 30 days. So what! Would you be a better person for thirty days so you could fool God into letting into Paradise? I think people should do their best, whether or not distruction is on its way. It doesn't affect my life and it shouldn't affect yours either. I think that you basicly believe the following: God loves you and if you don't believe it he'll kill you.
By the way, you probaly also believe that you, yourself, can never to quiet enough to curry Jehovah's favor. Ever get that feeling down deep inside. Many Witnesses do.

So the religion protected you from burning crosses and stealing fire arms. Lord help me, I don't know if I could have avoided those temptations, but I am sure glad you could do it. Praise Jehovah for your spiritual strength to overcome these Satanic influences.
Even without Jehovah's wonderful influence, I never did burn crosses or steal fire arms. Maybe Satan didn't show me the way.

How old are you? I would guess 30 plus or minus 5 years. Now, you are part of a religion that's has been here for 120 years, so look at in its historical context. You are a young puppy all wound up and excited. We've done that, bin there. We are not all excited any more. Just get some love in your heart and forget about destruction.

Having been out of the org. for a very long time, I have a very different perspective. I don't get in a lather over anything that's invisible. I also, don't get in a frenzy over a day of destruction. All this stuff has no bearing on my life. I try to be a good person as best I know how because goodness is its own immediate reward. I don't need the threat of a vengeful God to prod me, and I don't need the fear of an evil Satan it keep me watchful. Since I can't change anything that's invisible, I don't worry about it. To me that is a collosal waste of time and energy.
Life is so much more peaceful for me now that it used to be.

it was triggered by trevors comments re the low self esteem that is endured by many jw youngsters.. i`m wondering if the singing of kingdom songs can actually make you feel depressed and worthless.
i know it might seem a strange idea at first, but see if my reasoning doesn`t make at least some sense.. i frequently see the tv ad for linguaphone, the language learning course, that uses your repetition of foreign language phrases spoken along with a cassette recording.
They used to have a song book that had some pretty good stuff in it. Some of tunes were from classical music with words added. Some were Protestent hyms of good quality with some word modifications. One day they decided that all these songs were of pagan origin, and threw them all out. By contrast I thought the new song book was just awful.
