.....your boyfriend proposed to you while on vacation?.
the reason i ask this is because a couple i know was away in the tropics, and he popped the question.
and yet, since they've been back (over 8 months) they've been mum on all things wedding.
I often wonder about these marriage proposals at big public venues like football games and the like. What would happen if the girl said no? And, the pressure on her to say yes when proposed to at those events...

i know that technically speaking, the wtbs has left voting as a "matter of conscience" in certain articles, but growing up jw, in practice, voting was always strictly forbidden.. with our referendum elections going on in texas, i got to wondering whether they just avoided political elections?
or are all sorts of political voting forbidden, such as on propositions?
for instance, should certain types of taxes be allowed to increase for disabled people?
It has been reported that JWs in many European countries actually do go to the polls. If I am not mistaken the French JWs are encouraged to do this because of the bad press the JWs have gotten in that country lately.

i've been thinking about writing this letter since my other step son...sean...went to visit his dad at the beginning of the summer...the good jw dad saw his son for a total of 3 hours out of the week he was there.. bxxxy, my step son who is still a slave witness told sean...who is attending classes to become a catholic...that the catholic church taught that jw's will go to hell.
here's the letter i've finally responded with...i haven't sent it yet...you can make suggestions...which i can reject if i wish.. sean mentioned to me that you said something to him on his last visit that has me a little concerned.
ive thought long and hard about writing this letter and decided (finally) to go ahead and write it and send it.. .
Hi:
The historic Christian faith has often described the pain of being in hell with that of fire. However, it is unclear how literal that is to be taken. The fact of the matter is that the Church has consistently taught that hell is for those individuals who make a conscious decision to reject God for all eternity. Hell is eternity without God.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church is available in most bookstores. The copy I have was published in the early 1990's. It is an excellent book and cleared up a lot of the misconceptions that I have had about the Catholic faith.

When I was at Bethel, the JWs were trying to get approval from the NYC to build a huge bldg. They got JWs from all over the city to picket outside of the meeting where the decision to give the approval was being made. They JWs had signs and everything and they got their pictures in the paper.
Also, I remember a story that Victor Blackwell told me one time. Victor Blackwell was a lawyer for the Society and one of the first Gilead School instructors. Anyway, he told me that one time during a district convention the mayor of the city asked if he could welcome the delegates to the city. The convention must have allowed him to say something from the platform. After his welcoming, the chairman of the convention made sure to point out to the mayor that JWs do not vote and that his welcoming was NOT going to get him any votes in the upcoming mayoral election.
Also, the JWs send people to testify before congress all of the time when it comes to freedom of religion issues. In fact, the JWs often team up with other cults like the Scientologists, Mormons, Hare Krishnas etc. particularly in third world countries to influence the gov'ts there. Also,It has been reported that the JWs have done this in Russia to try to influence political decisions there.

one of the cornerstones of jw's is counsel.
they just love to give counsel and many times they will literally make things up just for the sake of counsel.
i was once counselled for joking around too much.
I was counseled while working at Bethel for smiling too much while working...
I was counseled that my hair was too long because the back of my hair touched the top of my shirt collar. So, they were not going to let me give a part on the circuit assembly because of the length of my hair.
Speaking of the circuit assembly....I was at a circuit assembly one time and a really good friend of mine gave a demonstration on how to place some piece of watchtower literature. It seemed that she did a good job to me. The next day, the Circuit Overseer apologizes to the assembly for the skirt this sister wore on the platform to do the part. My friend was mortified. I saw her the next week and she asked me what I thought about her skirt. I told her that I was not paying attention to what she was wearing. She said that the reason they hated it was because she had a slit in the back. I figured the slit was there so that she could actually walk with it on. I did not remember it being all that high. In any case, I thought it was a tempest in a teapot.
Oh yea, my wife (this was before we were married) once bought her younger brother a really stylish GQ like suit while we were at Bethel. My brother-in-law would wear this suit to his hall in NYC and get all kinds of compliments. When me and my brother-in-law went back to PA for a visit and he wore his suit, he was hauled into the back room by the elders and told never to wear that "hairy suit" again because it reflected poorly on him as a Bethelite.
At Bethel my roommate was counseled by my home overseer for having a Georgia Bulldog Nat'l Championship on his dresser. This was even though it was given to him by a brother from his home congregation. The Home Overseer told him it was not appropriate for a Bethelite to have that in his room.
When I first got to Bethel, I was wearing a New Orleans Saints T-shirt since I am from New Orleans. I was counseled that I was not to wear that shirt in public while walking through Bethel. That I would have to wear a shirt over it and once I got outside of Bethel then it was okay to wear the shirt.
While at Bethel, I had this desk in my room. One day the housekeeper or the home overseer noticed that there was something on the desk that they could not clean off of it. I was doing remodeling work one day when my work overseer tells me that I have a phone call. When I got to the phone, the home overseer wanted to know what was on my desk. I told him that I did not know what it was on my desk and that I had not noticed any problems with the desk. He immediately chewed me out for what was on the desk that they could not clean off and he told me that the desk would have to be refinished and that they were thinking about making me pay for it. He eventually told me that they would pay for it themselves but that if it happened again they would take the money out of my allowance to replace the desk. He also told me that I had a problem because I did not appreciate the provisions of the "Faithful Slave" in this matter.
I think I will stop here...I got plenty more.

i was reading a post and someone said that you need to evaluate a religion based on what it would be like if everyone followed the rules of that religion perfectly.

Hi Gang-
I was reading a post and someone said that you need to evaluate a religion based on what it would be like if everyone followed the rules of that religion perfectly. Well, over on Randy's site at www.freeminds.org, he has a link to the Armageddon Okies. The following is Leroy's Great Dream which is taken from the Armageddon Okies site. The rest are just as funny as this one. Here it is:
Leroy's Great Dream
Dear Randy,
LeRoy had a dream and he wonders what it means. He asked me to tell it to you and see if you knew. He's falling, falling, and when he wakes up he's in a seat in a Kingdom Hall somewhere, but he doesn't know where. The brothers are all wearing double breasted IBM business suits and the sisters are all wearing nylons and skirts that just touch the floor when they kneel. The babies are all awake listening to the speaker whose talk is closely following the societies outline. The boy children are all wearing small business suits and polished shoes with matching socks. Their fingernails are clean.
The girl children all are wearing white dresses and keep their eyes down. When a question is asked at the Watchtower study every single person in the Hall raises their hand, even the babies. Everyone who is called on to answer, paraphrases the answer in their own words with the idea directly from the Watchtower paragraph. During the entire meeting, which lasted three hours, no one got up to go to the restroom or get a drink. After the meeting everyone there lined up at the literature counter and picked up their magazine orders of thirty-six copies of each issue and then lined up at the contribution boxes to contribute two dollars per copy as an unrelated donation to the preaching work. After the donations were made everybody was smiling and talking to each other. No one has ever been disfellowshipped from this congregation because everybody simply accepts what is taught from the platform and in the literature. No one ever questions the Society or the elders.
When they left the Hall, everybody was driving clean new Buick four door sedans with Watchtowers taped to the lower left side of the back windows. They all live in ranch style government tract houses, get food stamps, have part time cleaning or painting businesses and pioneer full time. No one goes to college. The children are all home schooled or attend a public school where the teachers are all in the truth. The children don't talk to anyone not in the truth and don't take part in any after school sports. The mothers don't read romance novels or gossip.
Every day every family considers the day's text and reads the Watchtower comments about it. No one has any pets in the house or cooks with aluminum pans. No one has television and those with home computers do not access the Internet and only use the Watchtower CD for preparing talks. At bed time the children all go to their clean self made beds and sleep all night. The parents sleep together and pray before they have missionary sex and then they pray again after they have missionary sex. All fathers are elders.
We all think the doctors should change LeRoy's medicine. What do you think?
Clem
PS: After this dream LeRoy just sits in his chair and rocks and blows spit bubbles.
dave inspired me with his story of his week at bethel.
the fish in the pond outside the e building at the watchtower farm would eat out of your hand, very cool.
the fall colors of the mountains with the morning sunshine on them outside the dining hall at the farm were spectacular.
Hi Joel:
Thanks for the compliment. I did not know your friend Chris. However, I did know a guy named Joel who worked in the press room at the Farm. He was from Bogalusa, LA which was a little town just up the road from where I grew up. We pioneered together every once in a while. Did you know him?
