Reading the bible and loving it
by digderidoo inafter looking at some read the bible in one year plans, i have been toying with the idea of giving it a go.
i don't know if anybody has come across these plans, but each day of the week you put about 15 minutes aside and read a bit from the ot, a psalm, an epistle and a gospel.
eventually after a year you've read the lot.. although as a jw i have read most of the bible, i only did it within the constrains of referencing from a wt publication.

I've been reading the new testament without the watchtower goggles on for about a year now. It's funny how you can read the same scriptures you've read as a jw, and come up with a whole different meaning than what we had learned before.

I'm 30 mi. or so from the crash site. The local news is saying that there is no confirmation that the boy actually got in the balloon, other than what his brother told his parents. They are following the flight pattern to see where and if the boy may have fallen out.
The father is a storm chaser and this balloon was to be used for equipment to fly around and take measurements, that is why there is not a basket on it.
Thats all I know right now.

MY BROTHER-IN-LAW HAS DIED
by Mary inthis is one post i had always hoped i would never have to do, but after a long and brave battle, my beloved brother in law has died.
i have done a couple of threads on this in the past, so many of you know the battles he was facing.
he had been diagnosed earlier this year with myelodysplastic syndrome and the mortality rate of this disease is quite high.

Why Do people think they need A GOD to be good people?
by LucyA ini decided after much study and soul searching that i dont believe in god.
ive noticed recently (not on the forum but others) some people seem to think that if i dont believe in a god that im obviously morally bankrupt.
i dont feel this way as i give a portion of my income to charity and i have never set out to harm anyone else.

Why Do people think they need A GOD to be good people?
Personally, I can see why this would frustrate someone, I get frustrated when people think a believer is unintelligent or weak. There are extremists on both sides.
As a former Missouri girl, I find no fault in what ALLTimejeff said about "show me" verses "tell me" My life should reflect what I profess to believe. If you're an atheist and believe in leaving the world a better place, then do it. Same for believers. We Christians are saved by grace. Nothing we can do can add to our salvation, so our motivation in doing the "right thing" is because its the "right thing", not because some mistakenly think we can gain extra brownie points to being saved by being extra good. I do believe he created humans with a basic set of right & wrong, but many things are not absolutes, thats why we have freedom in Christ.
Our worship of our God should be based on our belief that there is a God and we want to worship him. He has given us the free will to choose to worship him or not. Buy anyway, that's my opinion.

Does anyone think that maybe we're just wrong?
by paul from cleveland ini was disfellowshipped in 1995. even though i lost my friends and family, i felt like i had been finally set free and was happy for many years.
while i was a jehovah's witness, i always felt so miserable.
i never felt like i was doing enough to please jehovah.

Hi Paul,
Your feelings are normal. I think with the worlds economic issues and the latest terrorist arrests, might be triggering some of those old emotions in us, not saying this is you, but it used to be everytime we heard negativity going on in the world our first reaction was " the end is coming!" You have to ask your self if you are having these feelings out of fear of Armegedon or because you really believe they have the truth?
They really make you feel like they have the truth and that they are Gods spokemen, but where is the proof that they were choosen in 1918? Other than them saying so? How do there teachings really compare with the bible? You might try checking out 4jehovah.org. It gives good scriptural comparisons to the JWs beliefs and that of christianity. It may help you make your decision.

I Don't Have to Be "RIGHT" Anymore.
by OnTheWayOut infor the record, i don't believe in the god of the bible, and i find it hard to believe in the god of any religion on earth.
i am closest to atheist in my beliefs if you want a traditional title, but i prefer "rationalist.
" i will do god's will for me when he directly tells me what it is.

Thanks so much for posting this thread.
It was quite a struggle for me when I left the Jw's. I had over emphasis on who is right? what is right? etc, etc. It drove me crazy. Its taken me over a year to get this stuff out of my head. I just finally decided "Clean Slate" For example: Im not going to worry about holidays and how they got started, but Im going to look at things from the way they are perceived today. I don't worry about what other people are doing anymore either.
I am a christian, but I don't feel the need to be "right" all the time. I love not having to have all the answers to everything. I like some things to be a mystery.
It feels great to just start over.

Did being JW help you cope with death?
by KDubbz ini was thinking about this today.
i remember when i attended meetings and conventions with my parents when i was growing up, i would run into some jws who said they were able to cope with death of their loved ones better due to the fact that they will be resurrected in the "new world" which gave them hope.
i find this partially true because they were given a false hope of being in the "new world" and seeing their loved ones again.

I actually think it made me numb to death. I never cried at any funeral while I was a jw. I don't know why. I know I hated the services because they were just about preaching their doctrine vs. a minute or two about the life of the person.
After I left the jw's my sister in law died and I cried like a baby.
I think outlaw is right on about jws avoiding death. My husband turns 52 in October and he literally cant believe it! He says he never thought he'd get old in this system.
