Child Abuse At The Meetings
by Hairyhegoat inplease read and i will tell you now this was it was like for me !.
kingdom halls are a hellish memory for me.
i grew up as a jehovah's witness from the age of 9 until i fought my way to freedom at age 18. i recall children as young as a year old being beaten repeatedly for not sitting still during services...some sessions, called assemblies, were 6 hours long and lasted for 3-5 days in succession.. my nephew was one of many who felt the literal sting of the watchtower's stance of "spare the rod, spoil the child.

I never got a single swat when I was spanked. Oh no, I was hit multiple times- my parents used their hand, belt, wooden spoon, even a 2x4 once. Who the hell spanks their kid with a wooden plank? My jw father, that's who.
My dad had a bad temper to begin with and when he became a witness, they pretty much gave him a license to really act on his temper.
How many people got spanked for hitting their brother or sister? How did our parents not see the hypocrisy in that?

What silly things have you been counselled on or simply been told off for?
by 3Mozzies inso what silly things have you been counselled on or simply been told off for?.
back in my early 20's, i had a pair of comfy old jeans that started to tear in about 3 places on the leg.
it was the fashion at the time so not only did they feel great to wear, they also looked 'in', not that i cared for that, but it was a bonus .

Remember when peasant skirts were popular in the 90's? Well, they were too long and I was being overly modest by wearing them.

the act of shunning spreads its tentacles toward others.
by man in black inmy wife and i da'ed ourselves two years ago, and dealing with the act of shunning was something that we were prepared for.. but our two sons, ( 22 and 26) who were never baptized are dealing with it in another way.. it seems that last week they went to the local panera for lunch one day.
this place is popular with the witnesses for breaks also.. well, as they were leaving there were several tables with the local jw's on morning break, they all talked and reminised a little about growing up,.
doing things, and going places together with all of our families.. both of my sons inquired about everybody's families, parents/siblings/relatives.. but both boys came home just fuming because not one of the witnesses asked how their parents were doing.

That's kind of funny, because I had a conversation with a witness once that was almost the exact opposite! I was just starting to fade at this time.
Her two daughters were around my age and we had hung out a lot- camping, sleepovers, shopping, etc. They were both disfellowshipped and never returned (good for them!) I had heard that the older one had gotten married and had a baby.
Me: Xxxxxx, how are Xxx and Xxxxx?
Their mom: (Confused pause) Well, they're both disfellowshipped.
Me: (Understanding that Mom is shunning her two daughters) Oh, I was just wondering how they were doing. I haven't seen them in so long! I remember... (some story about camping).
Their mom just smiled and nodded through my story and then changed the subject. I hadn't know that she was shunning her kids and was a bit horrified by it. In my area, most people don't shun family, but they do keep their association on the down low. But then their mom was known for being a real cow.

Hmm, it's too bad the caring brothers and sisters at the meetings couldn't have helped out... or that one of the parents couldn't be bothered to get a job to support their kids.

Cult...Cult...Cult...Cult!
by Cold Steel init seems that many people on this board get a certain amount of glee calling the jehovah's witness faith a "cult.
" especially former jehovah's witnesses.
and though it's true in a number of senses, we must be conscious of the fact that the early christians were considered by nearly everyone in roman and jewish society as a cult.

"When our own thoughts are forbidden, when our questions are not allowed and our doubts are punished, when contacts and friendships outside of the organization are censored, we are being abused for an end that never justifies its means. When our heart aches knowing we have made friendships and secret attachments that will be forever forbidden if we leave, we are in danger. When we consider staying in a group because we cannot bear the loss, disappointment and sorrow our leaving will cause for ourselves and those we have come to love, we are in a cult."
