a friend of mine (who is waking up), recently had the elders do a sheep herding visit.. they were browbeating my friend about attending meetings.

my friend has been ill and unable to attend anyway.. what response would you give to this garbage?.

if we were in a house and it was on fire and we couldnt walk we would have to crawl.. an example of a sister with an iron lung was brought up to show that if shes in this condition, we need to examine ourselves.

punkofnice: When I encounter these brain-dead analogies my response is to simply say "yes" very quickly and look as if I am politely waiting for them to raise their argument and missed it was an analogy to begin with:

Crawl to the door? yes. (wait).

Sister in iron lung with 10 bible studies? yes. (wait)

One should insist they make the argument in the actual situation and just ignore everything else as irrelevant. This is clearly difficult for them and the analogy is bound to resurface. Then I would politely say: But we are really talking about so-and-so and not a burning house, so perhaps we should talk about the actual situation instead? (wait for response; if the response is not a yes or no insist on the question).

With my training as a mental health professional and deep understanding of the human psyche I don't see any reason why being rejected by ones loved ones should be a problem because there are other people on earth who might not theoretically reject the person. In other words, my university-level training in human emotions tell me people do not (or should not?) think there is a difference between loved ones and total strangers.

Also, unlike most 8 year olds, I have no flippin' clue how many people are on the planet. Furthermore:

4 billions - 4 millions = 3 billions.

Enzo: Pray tell me what fine university of higher learning gave you your diploma? Your spelling of million make me think it might be somewhere in scandinavia

Why this assumption Enzo has studied psychology at a university? Wouldn't someone who had studied for several years at a university in Europe be able to write english at high-school level? Wouldn't someone with a university level education normally show a reading comprehension in english greater than a 14 year old and be able to read a simple question and type a response to that question? Would a mental health professional respond by non-sequiturs and by insisting those who disagree were under some mysterious effect caused by them breaking with a religion?

One thing is writing english at the same level a drunk moron might piss Shakespeare from memory in the snow, God knows my English is bad too and this might be compatible with a university education in some areas in Europe, however Enzo should be able to read English, think of a response to what was actually asked which is better than what the drunk moron might come up with, type it into google translate and get a response to what was actually asked in English.

my question is since it looks as though mammoths were alive after the flood and we know elephants are then how much food was needed to feed just these four animals for the time they were on the ark.

also was the ark, 500 feet long, big enough to hold the amount of food needed for just these 4 animals.. .

I think the main difficulty in having an intellegent debate about the ark is every reasonable objection can be met with "but god could have performed a miracle"; this can continue untill all the animals are magically turned into plastic animals at a size such that Noah could have kept them all in a shoebox, or god could have magically send them all away to narnia for a year or somesuch. I don't relally know how you are supposed to carry on a conversation from that point.

Stevepill: I think you are in a very difficult situation. You need to make a choice, and any choice you make have risks (marry & she become a witness) or certain negative consequences (not marry and reject her).

Firstly, In your situation, I think you should be most worried there is something you two cannot talk about (her religion). Having such a thing in a relationship is a legitimate concern no matter what it is and something you should try to discuss that with her. Does she understand why you are worried there is something so important to her that you are both unable to talk about? Would she consider talking about WHY she is unable to discuss the subject? if she is able to discuss the subject of religion, how would she like to discuss it? What if it was your religion that was closed-of territory?

Secondly, I think you should work on yourself. Information is power and there are very good resources that offers insight into why some forms of religion can cause people to shut off and what to do. If you have been lurking I am certain you have seen the endless recommendations of Steven Hassans "Releasing the bonds", however I would sincerely like to suggest you read it before trying to actively convince her of anything, at least look it up on amazon.

well, why would making children affect it being okay? Think about sex between a man and a 13 year old or sex between two elderly.

Second, re. Atheism and hope, again, is something true because it offers hope? Think about chrystal healing, plenty of hope and properly little truth.
