"Take away my birthday"
by OnTheWayOut ini used the phrase on another thread and realized it might be of interest."....
take away my birthday" is:a sarcastic response when someone warns you not to do something that is considered socially unacceptable.. example of usage:'you really shouldn't drop stink bombs in the class room the same day of finals.
take away my birthday?

one odd thing about not celebrating birthdays...The WTS made the point that it can make brats out of kids, EXPECTING gifts and making a big deal about THEMSELVES. I grew up with my family members all observing each others' birthdays and there are a lot more of THEM to remember and show love to than there are of ME. I mean, it's a lot more about GIVING than RECIEVING!
I feel guilty about turning such an innocent thing into a big-deal conscience matter.

What makes an apostate...
by IronHill inan apostate for witnesses?.
i only ask because we have had several conversations with family members who want to make sure we have not become "apostates".
a rumor has been going around that we have become, sign carrying, picketing kh's attending, leaflet printing apostates.

that seems to be up for personal interpretation. It goes anywhere from speaking out against the organization to answering a paragraph too much in your own words in the watchtower or book study.
If you go to any other church, that is definitely setting yourself up to be called apostate.
If you speculate about anything that hasn't been addressed in the publications, you may be an apostate.
In general terms, thinking is an apostate act, but thank goodness, people can't tell what you're thinking.

Michael Jursa (British Museum) and 587 vs. 607 B.C.
by Dogpatch inthis was sent to me as a comment for free minds.
the author says, i'm not sure if you are aware of this fact or not: if you look at the awake!
may 2009 pg 11 , it says that jerusalem siege was in 607, according to professor michael jursa working in the british museum, but curiously if you go to the british museum official webpage, (in "search" put michael jursa) you ll see that it says the siege of jerusalen was in 587 bc !!.

I've always hoped that I wouldn't ever need to jump through all of those hoops with an "interested person." All of that
day for a year" from one end of the Bible, to the "time and times and half a time" from the other end of the Bible and all of the convoluted starting places and no-year-zero and blablah, just so I could finish up by saying "Yep. that's how God's REAL worshippers do it!"Why couldn't they just help people to build up honest, kind , loyal personalities? Help people to see the power of love and generosity, honor for the aged ones, and the value of the higher Bible principles, WITHOUT having to establish all of that "We're number ONE!" THAT would be a witness that people would take notice of!

tough break. Sounds like a good wife to be done with, though. I hate it when somebody has a "friend" in the BOE and judicial matters work out well for them. My daughter was df'd when she and an elder's son got involved. I had stepped down by that time, so it was a no-brainer. Protect the boy, disfellowship the girl. I know what you mean about all of the friendships that you cultivate for years meaning nothing if the word is out that you are a worthless piece of scum. My time is coming, likely, but for now I'm Stillin.

"Jehovah has really blessed me."
by stillin ini was at dinner with witness friends last night when one of the guys started that up.
i kept my mouth shut, let him have his say for a while; it's good to feel gratitude and i'm glad for him that he feels so blessed, but never, even in my most "spiritually healthy" days have i boasted like that.
finally, i spoke up with "how do you think that makes me, almost unemployed and struggling these days, feel?

He said that he didn't mean it like that but I can't think of any other meaning except "Good things come from Jehovah to the ones he loves. If things aren't good for you, He doesn't love you as much as he loves me."
I really don't need to hear this stuff. And I don't want to be the kind of person who gloats when something bad happens to somebody like that, either.
My life probably fits more into the category of "Consider it all joy when you meet with various trials..."

Brother, Sister
by B_Deserter inthe witnesses refer to each other as "brother" or "sister.
" this is supposedly because they are a "spiritual family" and this is supposed to encourage that feeling.. but how often did you refer to your biological brothers and sisters by their title?
when i was playing in the yard with my little brother i wasn't yelling "catch the ball, brother _______!

I was told that it was a way of showing respect. Talk about an iron fist in a velvet glove.
I always cringed when somebody newly interested was first called upon to answer in the book study or WT as "Brother." I thought "well, that's a stretch..."
