I "think" I've "seen" this site a few times over the 10 years I've been out. Somehow I didn't read enough to realize how amazing it is. My confidence in my decision to leave didn't really need help, but I've often "wondered" whether I'd have been happier being a moron. Meeting lots of happy non-morons has been very healing. I bring most of my pain on myself, I don't like being comfortable, there is too much to do, solve and wonder about in this world. When I get a little "too" uncomfortable or lonely, I wonder whether the simple people I left behind me are "happier" than I am. I sometimes wonder whether I care or whether some nice cozy lives and the pretended life would be a better place.
I also didn't really think about my JW upbringing much until I got out of the Army National Guard (6 years in). Not dying gloriously in battle and very sure that my "save the world" path wasn't all it was supposed to be, I fell into a bit of a quarter life crisis (I'm 27).
Quarter life crisis made me look backwards and think about where I have gone, what my options (being not dead and no longer planning to go to war) are. I got the notion to run around and find people from my past. I was mostly thinking about going back to school for a PhD or something. I wanted to rule out "the normal" life (meaning JW or equivalent type ambition, ignoring the call for something "great" to do with my life).
Short answer, went to a couple meetings, was shocked by the level of insanity present. Met old friends, was shocked at level of brainwashing. Got really agitated about the Jehovah's Witnesses "problem", went to a meetup.com group and they told me about "JWD".
Long way to get around to "some guy told me" when in reality it was all necessary to actually "find" JWD, because I'm sure I've "seen" this site before. It comes up first (after a few Borg traps) if you search "Jehovah's Witnesses".

And some of them are elders and pioneers today...go figure.
My realization that JW's are the most skilled and profound LIARS that I knew of (to say 'hypocrite' doesn't quite capture the issue) and that I can't be like that is what clinched the deal for me.
The really successful JW's lie all the way to the soul, and view the Christian congregation as a microcosm where they can be king, and they are not pathetic people incapable of living in the real world. I know for a fact that the majority of my peers who are now faithful pioneers, elders, ie "still in" do not "actually" believe "the truth". They are just so pathetic, its the world they choose to stay in.

in the above thread, otwo made a comment about how someone might sue the wt based on their shunning policy.
i have not seen the topic discussed here and have been unsuccessful in getting the search function of the site to gather information about it, but i wonder if we as a group could sue the washtowel society.

Why don't you use your own advice and quit being negative in thread where people are trying to positively cause change? If you are happy, then fine, but quit rubbing it in others faces who may not have been so fortunate as you.
See my put up or shut up comment. You aren't working for change by sitting around daydreaming about damaging a corporation. I see a lot of talk about suing, but not one person has indicated they are going to seek a lawyer. That is the first step to a suit. These threads are about whining and bellyaching, not about change. If there is a legitimate question or a need for help, I'm the first one to volunteer. I'm also the first to call bs on bs ideas.
You just aren't thinking creatively. How about we ask everyone on JWD to donate money, we collectively take out an advertisement in some major newspaper, but more importantly, tell every major media outlet that we've taken out the advertisement and why, the advertisement appeals to any interested organization to consider fighting for legal protections of the rights that the organization tramples on and the harm it causes, with the stated intent of forcing the organization to change its most harmful, non-biblical, traditions such as shunning of non-believing family.
Now, if we did that, Mr. Naysayer, does it fucking matter whether a lawsuit can be won in the current frame of case law?

It started when the government wanted an idea to look good. It had to be something that would look like they are trying to fix the energy crisis, but it has to be totally ineffective. So they came up with the harebrained idea of taking our corn and using it for biofuel. That not only would use as much oil to create the energy equivalent in ethanol, but it would take corn from the food system. Corn prices would go up, as would prices of anything that is made from corn.
It would also affect other commodities. Land that used to produce wheat, cotton, vegetables, and soy is used to plant corn instead for the stupid biofuel program. That would create shortages of those commodities as well. It spills into eggs, milk, and most meats that eat corn and/or wheat. The pigs that came up with that program wanted it that way, because they could then mitigate (not totally eliminate) the resultant economic crisis, and look good while appearing to save the planet from global warming (which idea is hogwash: SUVs cannot warm Mars).
I have also noticed, for all the energy independence rallies, that there is not one drop of interest in nuclear power. The technology needs to improve to extract energy from the radioactive wastes until it becomes safe to have a reactor in your backyard and one in mine. Nuclear fusion has not gotten any attention, either, except for building nuclear bombs. I also think solar, tidal, wind, geothermal, and hydro power are underutilized. And they have the audacity to pick the one "solution" that is going to waste more oil than it saves, plus push food prices up. Now we have two problems, for the price of one.
No No NO NO NO NO NO.
BioFuels have little to nothing to do with increasing food costs.
FAIR NOTICE: I work mainly for the Ethanol industy (but also for Oil and Gas suppliers, I have a pretty good picture of this)
#1 Is rising standards of living in China and India (BILLIONS of new consumers who are eating more than a ball of cold rice now)
#2 Is fuel costs. Due to plateau of known supplies, the known high cost of recovering known resevoirs, the rampant speculation this future shortage scenario creates, and yes, the Billions of Chinese and Indians that want to burn the same gas soon.
#3 The depressed dollar. Lots of reasons for that, rampant debt and viable competing currencies are big ones.
Ethanol is the best possible replacement for Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether MTBE (a fuel oxygenate and octane booster, Google it). It is NOT, and never has been a "replacement" for gasoline. If you don't like the taste ot MTBE in your drinking water, you like Ethanol, end of story (we ALL like the taste of Ethanol! mmm). Cellulosic ethanol could make a nice dent, but its more important to have competing products with gasoline than to displace huge amounts of gasoline off the market. You want fuel diversity, read an economics book sometime.
Ethanol production from Corn does NOTHING other than divert starch to fuel that otherwise would be fed, nearly uselessly, to ruminant animals. Ruminants do not need Starch, they need fats and protein. ALL of the fats and protein from the corn gets fed to ruminants as Dry Distillers Grains and Solubles (DDGS). If you expect that humans will still eat meat, virtually no meaningful amount of 'food' has been diverted from the food chain. If you want to observe that producing and eating meat is a very inefficient way to feed people, no shit sherlock, but that's about McDonalds, not Ethanol.
Congratulations, you now have the basic information necessary to avoid chanting support of foolish causes like some JayDub, glad I could help. Yes, the solution is Nuclear. It will be done. The prospect of collecting Helium-3 from the moon to fuel fusion reactors is one of many reasons why the United States and other countries are interested in going back into interplanetary spaceflight. Stay tuned.
The energy and environment issues are very big, very real issues, but don't get too upset about the doomsday and conspiracy theorists. Of all groups of people, I shouldn't have to explain that to you guys. It is a beautiful world, and I enjoy living in it.

feel free to contact a lawyer and get some advice.
Don't ever ask a lawyer for advice, they are very stupid people only interested in stuffing their pockets with your money.
If you need a lawyer, present them with a mission or a goal, ask them if they can accomplish it or not, and then for an assessment of the level of effort it may require before they succeed. "What should I do" is the worst thing you can possibly ask a lawyer.

Jehovah's Witnesses are CASTING A GIANT SHADOW
by Terry infolks are about as happy as they decide to be.. looking on the bright side of life gives you more of a foothold when things go awry.
nurturing hope builds a foundation for you which enables you to save for tomorrow and build toward the future and hang on when things get tough.. people dig their own graves when they become pessimists.
"why bother" replaces "that's worth a try!".

I replied, Wow have you ever read anything about world history? Cause I dont know about you, but the Dark Ages seemed a whole lot worse than than now. I mean, really half of Europe died of the Plague! A disease that was eradicated in the 20th century thanks to modern medicine.
I was always very, very confused at the concept that the world is getting worse. Even as a very young boy, I could see that being a human being on earth has ONLY gotten better, more enlightened, more comfortable, safer, interesting and hopeful throughout human history.
The good news doesn't make news folks. I talked to someone I love today, nobody noticed (except them).
There is a definite mental sickness in the doctrine of the Forlorn and Depressed Sociopath, where's the "good news(TM)"?

To the Christians...
by VoidEater into the christians on the board:.
thank you for living up to the best your beliefs have to offer.
with very few exceptions, my flailings and rantings as i refine my own "truth" have been greeted with patience and kindness, or kindly ignored.. i do not foresee that i will ever return to a belief system that you hold dear, yet i do respect your beliefs - and appreciate your insights.

For the record, I am in favor of people believing happy things. It is the torment of smart people that gets my dander up.
So long as all believers acknowledge that they are not as smart as me, and i should be respected as a smarter person, I've got no problem with them. (this is a joke folks)
Being an Ex-JW makes any man or woman my brother or sister.

I'm a fan of the phrase "put up or shut up."
Get me some evidence that the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society burns coal somewhere, I'll get you rabid lawyers looking for publicity. Anybody consider the ACLU? Its an organization that I love in concept, get concerned about in practice. However their unbalanced zeal could be useful.
