Jeffro, you're right ... there are those groups that are more dangerous ("Sciencetology"), but it doesn't take away the point that the WTBTS is a mind-controlling cult.

Be Fair = Witnesses are NOT a cult!! What about Christians or democracy?
by Witness 007 inpeople like to throw around the cult word when describing the watchtower society.
but look at the definition of "cult" and you will see it applies to any system of thought concieved by an individual or group to control others.
are christians a jesus cult...yes.

Do you think JWs actually care if they convert people or not?
by LouBelle inthe reason i ask this is because when i was on the field way back in the day - i really couldn't be bothered if the householder was interested or not.
if they took literature and paid for it (we asked a certain price for literature before it all became on a donation basis) it was a bonus, plus meant money for a cooldrink / tea & cake afterwards.. actually i would prefer it if they weren't interested so i could get away from the door - sometimes their ""conversation stoppers"" made too much sense and i couldn't answer back.. that meant i didn't convert anybody.
do you think most of the jws' are like that today?

I didn't care if I got someone interested ... it was more about how many magazines I placed.

But whether they are a dangerous cult when compared with certain other cults that are genuinely dangerous - suicide pacts etc, they're relatively tame.
Tell that to all the people (adults and children) who have died from "abstaining from blood" because of doctrine. How about those who didn't receive vaccinations when that was forbidden?

They are a cult. Any religion that forbids "individual thinking" is a sure sign of a cult. When 12 men in Brooklyn, New York dictate what you must think, say and do and if you should go against any of their teachings brings disfellowshipping. When 12 men proclaim that only they have the direct communication channel to God and all spiritual food comes from them - it's a cult.

What Was The Silliest "Offense" That You Were Counseled For?
by minimus inwhen i was a teenager, i was told by an elder that because i smiled a lot and was known for my good sense of humor, that i should come across as "more serious".
so before i was appointed a ms, while in my late teens, i transformed myself into a much more "serious" brother.. were you ever told that you needed to work on something that you knew was stoopid?.

Passing out wedding invitations in the foyer. Elder came up and said, "You can't conduct business in the KH. This is God's house!" So, my fiance and I waited after the meeting and passed the invitations in the parking lot. Same elder approaches me and says, "The parking lot is still part of Jehovah's house. You'll have to mail those invitations!"
The next month, I'm standing to get my new magazines and on the counter are a dozen pens that are advertising one of the Brothers businesses. I was so furious.

The Scarlet Colored Wild Beast and Gorbachev
by jgnat inthe insanity continues this week, with the study of the revelation book and the continued application of revelation 17 to the "anglo-american power" and the united nations.
we're on chapter 35. i think i've been assigned study duty because these obscure connections fly well over poor hubby's head.
what twigged my interest this week is reference to a "prominent leader of the former soviet union" who "joined the popes in rome" in expressing support for the un.

as you can imagine, when it fit's the society's purpose, they go "figurative" instead of "literal". On page 197 they explain the mark in this way, "Anybody engaged in everyday activiteis such as buying and selling is pressured to do things the way the wild beast does, as, for example, in celebrating holidays. They are expected to worship the wild beast, letting it rule in their lives, so as to receive its mark."
2 Timothy 4:3
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.
